Overview
The Brüel & Kjær Type 4190 (Bruel & Kjaer 4190 microphone) is a 1/2 in. free-field measurement microphone cartridge for high-precision free-field measurements where a 20 kHz microphone with high sensitivity is required. It is used in Class 1 sound level meters and in laboratory electroacoustic measurements.
The 4190 is externally polarized (200 V) and must be used with a classical preamplifier such as Type 2669. A press-fitted stainless-steel diaphragm gives long-term stability and mechanical robustness. TEDS combinations with Type 2669 are available (for example 4190-C-001 and 4190-L-001).

Brüel & Kjær Type 4190 System Compatibility
The 4190 is an externally polarized cartridge, so it only works on a classical preamplifier that supplies the 200 V polarization voltage. The manufacturer notes one benefit of external polarization: the microphone can be used at higher temperatures without large sensitivity changes.
The manufacturer sells the cartridge on its own and as the factory combination Type 4190-C-001, in which a 4190 is mated to Preamplifier Type 2669-C. The pair is assembled and sealed in a clean room and then handled as one unit with one type number and one serial number. It carries TEDS, so a compatible front-end reads type, serial number and sensitivity automatically. For the combination the manufacturer quotes 3.15 Hz to 20 kHz, 15 to 148 dB and -20 to +80 °C.
The 4190 is also named in the Type 2250/2270 hand-held analyzer product data as one of the two microphones those analyzers were delivered with, used with preamplifier ZC-0032.
Brüel & Kjær Type 4190 Selection Notes
Choose the 4190 when the measuring chain already provides 200 V polarization and a flat free-field response up to 20 kHz is required, for example in anechoic rooms, outdoor measurements away from reflecting surfaces, or loudspeaker and microphone testing. The cartridge is rear vented and its sensitivity changes only slightly with ambient conditions: -0.01 dB per kPa of static pressure and -0.012 dB per °C. If automatic sensor identification is wanted, the sealed TEDS combination 4190-C-001 is the version to order instead of a loose cartridge.
