Extech AN310 Large Vane CFM/CMM Anemometer and Psychrometer

Description

AN310 is the Extech large vane anemometer and psychrometer for HVAC airflow work. The 100 mm (4 in) vane measures air velocity from 0.2 to 30 m/s and calculates air volume in CFM or CMM from a duct area, while built-in sensors give air temperature, relative humidity, wet bulb and dew point. It stores up to 19,999 multi-point readings and offers timed averaging.

Duct and diffuser airflow with humidity in the same reading

A 4 in vane gives a steadier average than small vanes on larger ducts and grilles. The upper display shows air velocity or relative humidity and the lower display scrolls through air flow, temperature, wet bulb and dew point. Enter the duct area in square inches or square centimetres in setup and the meter converts velocity into CFM or CMM.

For diffusers the optional AN300-C airflow cone kit contains round (210 mm) and square (346 mm) adaptors, which the meter recognises automatically; it then uses the vane opening area rather than the setup value. Multi-point and timed average modes help with traverse readings across a duct.

Features stated in the datasheet and manual

  • Velocity 0.2 to 30 m/s (40 to 5900 ft/min); airflow 0 to 99,999 CFM or CMM.
  • Built-in NTC thermistors for air temperature, humidity, wet bulb and dew point; RH offset in setup.
  • Min/Max, data hold, multi-point average to 19,999 points, timed average up to 19,999 seconds.
  • Complete with four AAA batteries and hard case; auto power off after 20 minutes (can be disabled).

Choosing between AN300, AN310 and AN320

The datasheet lists AN300 (thermo-anemometer), AN310 (adds humidity, wet bulb and dew point), AN320 (adds CO2 0 to 9999 ppm) and AN300-C (airflow cone and funnel adapters). The AN310 sits in the middle: choose it when psychrometric values are needed but CO2 is not.

The datasheet gives a temperature accuracy of 0.6 C; the manual breaks accuracy into ranges, which are listed above. Use the manual values for acceptance work.

Operating notes from the manual

Air must enter the vane from the rear of the meter, with the temperature and humidity sensors in the centre of the vane. To measure duct volume, measure the duct area first, enter it in setup mode and select CMM or CFM on the lower display. Do not use the area setting when a cone adaptor is attached.

Allow the meter about 30 minutes at room temperature if an out-of-range temperature error appears. Remove the batteries if the meter is stored for a long period.

Typical uses in Gulf HVAC work

Datasheet applications include HVAC, manufacturing, engineering, appliance testing and research and design. General engineering note: in hot, humid Gulf buildings, supply air velocity and dew point checks on AHU outlets, ducts and diffusers help verify balancing reports and spot condensation risk; hold the meter still and take several readings for a reliable average.

Field use and calibration notes

Vane anemometers are used in the region by HVAC contractors and maintenance teams to balance air systems, check air conditioning diffusers and grilles, and test fresh air rates in buildings. For duct and grille measurements, enter the correct area and take several readings across the face, or use the averaging function, as velocity varies across the opening. Keep the vane clean and protect it from dust. Arrange calibration at regular intervals.

Record the duct areas and readings, so later checks can be compared directly.
