Bruel & Kjaer 4157 Ear Simulator IEC 60318-4
Description
Overview
The Brüel & Kjær Type 4157 Ear Simulator is an IEC 60318-4 coupler for measurements on earphones coupled to the ear by inserts such as tubes, ear moulds or ear tips. It reproduces the acoustic impedance of the human ear so that insert earphones and hearing aids are loaded as they would be in real use.
The 4157 is delivered assembled and calibrated with its own built-in 1/2 in. measurement microphone, located at a measurement plane that models the position of the eardrum. Microphone Preamplifier Type 2669 is supplied with the set.
Key Features
- Ear simulator to IEC 60318-4 for insert earphones and hearing aids
- Effective volume 1.26 ±0.03 cm³ at 500 Hz
- Built-in 1/2 in. measurement microphone at the ear reference plane
- Supplied with Microphone Preamplifier Type 2669
- Delivered assembled and calibrated

Brüel & Kjær Type 4157 Selection Notes
The manufacturer lists the 4157 under several order codes. The plain 4157 is the ear simulator itself, the 4157-B is described as a 711 ear simulator, and the 4157-X is the version with adaptor that is delivered without a preamplifier. When replacing an existing unit it is therefore worth checking which variant is on the old type label, in particular whether a preamplifier is expected in the delivery.
For level calibration the manufacturer lists two accessories with the 4157: Sound Calibrator Type 4231, a Class 1 calibrator giving 94 dB and 114 dB at 1 kHz, and Pistonphone Type 4228. The manufacturer describes three typical uses: frequency response, sensitivity and distortion measurements on insert earphones such as hearing-aid receivers and operator headsets, servicing of hearing aids, and production testing of earphones.
Why Seven Star LLC
Seven Star LLC supplies Brüel & Kjær acoustic simulators, microphones and measurement instruments to laboratories, clinics and industrial test facilities across Oman and the GCC. The type number and the scope of supply, including preamplifier and calibration documentation, are verified against the original B&K data before the order is confirmed.

About brand
The Brüel & Kjær items on this page are mainly machine vibration monitoring products from Brüel & Kjær Vibro, the company based in Darmstadt, Germany. Its VIBROCONTROL monitors, rack modules and velocity sensors protect turbines, compressors, pumps and fans against damaging vibration.
Seven Star LLC is an independent supplier that sources Brüel & Kjær Vibro monitoring modules, monitors and sensors for plants in Oman and the GCC, mostly as replacements for units already in service.
Brüel & Kjær Vibro product families
The largest group here is rack hardware: SM-610 monitoring modules in many variants (the suffix, as in SM-610-A02 or SM-610-118, fixes the version), the PS-610 power supply module and the CI-620 communication interface. Stand-alone monitors include the VIBROCONTROL 1000, the VC-920 and the VC-868/1, alongside the AMO-622 monitoring system. Sensors include the VS-068 and VS-069 velocity sensors. The manufacturer's present machinery protection platform is the VC-8000. Laboratory accelerometers and sound and vibration analyzers that carry the Brüel & Kjær name are a separate product line, and a few of those instruments are listed here as well; send us the type number if that is what you need.
Where Brüel & Kjær vibration monitoring is used
Typical machines are steam and gas turbines, generators, centrifugal compressors, boiler feed pumps, cooling tower and process fans and gearboxes in power plants, oil and gas facilities, cement works and petrochemical plants. The monitors supply alarm and trip contacts to the plant protection system and measured values to the control room.
Ordering Brüel & Kjær Vibro parts: what we need
Send the complete type designation with its suffix, the order or part number from the label, and the serial number. For monitors add the measuring span, sensor type, supply voltage and output configuration, since many units are configured to order. For sensors give sensitivity, mounting direction, cable length, connector and the hazardous area approval. Photos of the label and of the rack help.

Frequently Asked Questions
The 4157 is an ear simulator built to IEC 60318-4, used for testing hearing aids, earphones and audiometric equipment by simulating the acoustic load of the human ear.
The 4157 follows the IEC 60318-4 specification for ear simulators used in audiometry and telephone testing.
Yes. The earphone under test is coupled to the simulator and the sound pressure at the ear reference point is measured over the audiometric frequency range.
The simulator works with the B&K measurement microphone and analysis system. Seven Star LLC can confirm the matching components for your laboratory.
The coupler is cleaned and inspected before each calibration session, and the measurement microphone is checked against the laboratory reference.
