Brand:

TSI AccuBalance 8380 Air Capture Hood with Micromanometer

Description

A fabric capture hood for balancing diffusers and grilles

The TSI AccuBalance 8380 is an air balancing kit: a fabric capture hood on a base that carries a DP-Calc micromanometer. Placed over a diffuser, register or grille it reads the volumetric flow directly, with supply flow positive and return flow shown as a negative number. A 2 ft x 2 ft (610 x 610 mm) nylon hood comes attached to the base.

The same micromanometer also works with a pitot tube, static pressure probes, a velocity matrix and temperature or humidity probes, which turns the kit into a general test and balance set. Other TSI instruments are grouped under Portable Test & Measurement.

Features from the manual

  • Auto-zero for pressure, automatic density correction and back-pressure compensation when used with a capture hood.
  • Single reading (1 to 8 seconds) or running-average measurement; read from the meter or the red switch on the base.
  • Bi-directional Bluetooth to the 8934 printer or a PC, plus USB download with LogDat-CH software.
  • Swirl X flow conditioner supplied, to cut errors that can exceed 40 % of flow on swirl diffusers without one.

Hood size, kit parts and options

The standard kit hood is 2 ft x 2 ft. The manual lists alternate fabric hood and frame kits by part number: 801200 (1 x 4 ft), 801201 (2 x 4 ft), 801202 (1 x 5 ft), 801203 (3 x 3 ft), 801209 (16 x 16 in.), 801210 (5.25 in. x 4 ft), 801211 (28 x 28 in.) and 801212 (28 x 50 in.), plus combination kits 801206 and 801207. Biological safety cabinet hood kits 801204 and 801205 are used for direct in-flow measurement on Class II cabinets.

Optional probes include the 800187 air flow probe, the 800220 temperature and humidity probe, thermoanemometer probes 960, 962, 964 and 966, the 801090 velocity matrix add-on kit and the 8934 Bluetooth printer. The sister Model 8715 is the micromanometer without the hood.

Assembly and measurement notes

Place the base on the floor, bend each support pole into the cup at the opposite corner of the fabric frame, and repeat for all four poles; the manual gives six steps. To change hood size, unlatch the cinch belt, pull the shock cord from the frame and fold the fabric with its size tag visible.

Keep the hood in place for the whole measurement, otherwise the reading is in error. For a single reading choose Capture Hood or Hood BP Comp in the Pressure Tool menu, set logging to Manual/Single and the time constant to 5 seconds. The manual warns that dust, pollen and mould may be released in ducts and says to wear a mask or respirator if sensitive. Appendix A explains the back pressure a hood imposes on the outlet.

Balancing and commissioning jobs in the Gulf

The kit is used to test, balance or commission HVAC supply and return outlets in hotels, hospitals, offices and data halls, and, with the matrix and BSC hood kits, to check fume hood, filter and cabinet face velocity. The micromanometer is rated to 60 C operating; the kit weighs 7.4 lb, so plan access equipment for high ceilings.

Companion TSI items

The manual lists a wheeled carrying case 802601, NiMH cells 1208048, AC adapter 801040, 18 in. pitot probe 534534001, two static pressure probes 3002017, 16 ft tubing 3900031, Swirl X conditioner 801213 and USB cable 1303754.
