AMETEK Thermox WDG-V UOP/RP CCR Oxygen Analyzer

Description

AMETEK Thermox WDG-V UOP/RP oxygen analyzer for CCR platforming regenerators

The AMETEK Thermox WDG-V UOP/RP is a close-coupled, nitrogen-aspirated zirconium oxide oxygen analyzer designed for the catalyst regeneration section of continuous catalytic regeneration (CCR) platforming units. In these units coke is burned off the catalyst with a carefully controlled oxygen level, and too much oxygen can damage the catalyst thermally. The WDG-V UOP/RP gives the control system a fast, reliable oxygen reading from inside the regenerator environment.

The name reads as follows: WDG-V is the Thermox analyzer series, and UOP/RP marks the version prepared for the UOP CCR process and similar regeneration duty. Seven Star LLC supplies the WDG-V UOP/RP in Oman and the GCC as an independent supplier based in Muscat.

How the WDG-V UOP/RP draws and measures the sample

A nitrogen-operated aspirator pulls a small amount of gas from the regenerator through a heated probe. Part of that stream passes over the zirconia cell, which produces a signal that follows the oxygen content of the gas. Because the nitrogen used to drive the aspirator contains no oxygen, the aspirated sample can simply be returned to the process, so there is no separate vent or return line to build.

The whole sample stream is heated above the sample dew point, which removes the risk of acid condensation and corrosion. The cell is specially treated to survive the halogen oxidation conditions found in CCR service, and an all-Hastelloy sample path is available as an option for harsher streams.

Servicing the WDG-V UOP/RP without a unit shutdown

Dual isolation valves let the sensor be changed while the CCR process keeps running, which preserves availability on a unit that operates for long periods. The analyzer also tracks cell age and cell resistance and raises alarms before performance drops. The manufacturer states that the predictive diagnostics and proactive alarms are designed for SIL 2 use; the exact functional safety scope of any installed analyzer still has to be confirmed against the project safety documentation.

Selection checklist for the WDG-V UOP/RP

  • Probe length: 18 in or 27 in, chosen from vessel wall and insulation thickness.
  • Wetted materials: standard 316 stainless steel or all-Hastelloy C sample path.
  • Supply voltage: 115 VAC or 230 VAC.
  • Hazardous area: ATEX/IECEx or Class 1 Division 2 manuals and versions exist, so state the site classification.
  • Communications: Modbus RTU, HART option, and whether an AMEVision HMI is required for one or several analyzers.
  • Nitrogen availability at the required pressure above process pressure for the aspirator.
  • Remote calibration unit if timed automatic calibration is wanted.

WDG-V UOP/RP installation and commissioning

Mount the probe where the sample is representative and the process stream is hot enough for the heater to hold the dew point margin. Maximum sample dew point is 200 °C, so check the regenerator gas conditions first. Install the nitrogen supply with a regulator and filter, and verify flow in the 10 to 20 scfh window.

At start-up, apply zero and span gases at the specified flow, confirm output scaling and alarm relay set points, and test the low sample flow alarm. Record the cell resistance reading as a baseline for later trending. Spare cells and probe gaskets are the usual stock items for a WDG-V UOP/RP.

WDG-V UOP/RP in Oman and the GCC

CCR platforming is used in refineries and aromatics complexes. With ambient temperatures up to the 60 °C limit of the electronics enclosure and dusty coastal air, the IP65 hinged enclosure and shaded installation matter. Our supply covers refinery and petrochemical sites in Oman and the GCC that need replacement or additional units for catalyst regeneration oxygen control.

Site conditions in Oman for the WDG-V UOP/RP

Safety and analytical equipment in Gulf plants has to perform reliably in heat, dust and humidity. Before installing the WDG-V UOP/RP, check the operating temperature range, ingress protection and hazardous-area approvals against the actual location, and consider shading or weather protection for units exposed to direct sun. Sensor positioning should follow the gas properties and the site fire and gas philosophy, with access kept clear for testing.

Plan the test and calibration routine from the start. Record the configuration and alarm settings of each WDG-V UOP/RP, keep the required calibration gas or test equipment available, and agree a replacement interval for consumable parts so that the system stays compliant with the inspection regime at sites across Oman.

Most of these analysers work on light absorption. UV analysers such as the 933 and 9900 measure H2S and SO2 by their absorption bands, and tail gas analysers use this to keep the H2S to SO2 ratio near 2:1 for the best Claus conversion. TDLAS moisture analysers use a tuned laser on a single water line, so they respond fast and do not suffer from the glycol and methanol contamination that affects sensor-based analysers.

Where AMETEK instruments are used

In Oman and the GCC, AMETEK analysers run on gas processing and sulfur recovery units, gas pipelines and custody points, refinery heaters and boilers, power station generators and steel and cement furnaces.
