Allen-Bradley 25B-B5P0N104 PowerFlex 525 0.75 kW AC Drive

Description

A 240V three-phase PowerFlex 525 at 5 A

The Allen-Bradley 25B-B5P0N104 is a 200 to 240V three-phase PowerFlex 525 rated 0.75 kW (1 HP) and 5.0 A. The B voltage code means three-phase input; the very similar A code is single-phase, so the pair 25B-B5P0N104 and 25B-A4P8N104 must not be confused when ordering.

The PowerFlex 525 adds an embedded EtherNet/IP port and Safe Torque Off, rated up to SIL 2 / PLd, to the 520-series family. Frame A measures 72 x 152 x 172 mm and weighs 1.1 kg (2.4 lb).

Distinguishing it from the single-phase model

For a three-phase 240V supply the input current is only 5.8 A, with 2.7 kVA and a 170 to 264V input range. A single-phase drive of the same size draws more current because the supply is not shared across three conductors, so single-phase supplies need the A-code drive.

Catalog number decoding: 25B is the PowerFlex 525, B is the voltage code (240V AC three-phase), the rating digits give the output current, N is the IP20 NEMA/Open enclosure, 1 is the standard keypad module, 0 is no EMC filter and 4 is standard braking, meaning the brake IGBT is included. The IEC protection table lists 10 to 16 A fuses, a 100-C09 or 100-E09 contactor and a 140M-C2E-B63 motor protector.

Because this model is built for three-phase 240V, it often replaces older fixed-speed starters on small machines where the owner wants soft starting, adjustable speed and network diagnostics. A line contactor of 100-C09 style is listed in the protection table, but many sites simply use the drive’s own start and stop control with a disconnect upstream.

Where it is used

At 1 HP this drive fits small positioning conveyors, mixers and fans on 230V three-phase systems. Its total watts loss is 50 W, and no EMC filter is fitted, so a separate filter may be needed where radio-frequency emission limits apply.

The drive offers an embedded EtherNet/IP port, so a ControlLogix or CompactLogix controller can configure and control it directly. Always check the supply voltage and phase on the nameplate before ordering, as a wrong voltage code cannot be corrected in the field.

PowerFlex 520-series design features that apply to this drive

Rockwell Automation’s technical data (publication 520-TD001) describes several design points shared across the 520-series, and they all apply to the 25B-B5P0N104:

  • Modular construction: the control module and power module are detachable, so the drive can be configured while the power section is being installed. The same standard control module is used across the whole power range.
  • MainsFree configuration: the control module can be connected to a PC with a standard USB cable to upload, download and update settings without mains power applied.
  • Accessory cards: the PowerFlex 525 supports two option cards, the PowerFlex 523 one, without increasing the footprint.
  • Mounting: A, B and C frame drives can be DIN rail mounted, and panel mounting is also available. Zero stacking is allowed at ambient temperatures up to 45 °C (113 °F).
  • EMC: external filters provide compliance with EN 61800-3 categories C1, C2 and C3. This catalog number has no internal filter (the N in the code).
  • Protection and braking: a removable MOV to ground allows operation on ungrounded distribution systems, a relay precharge limits inrush current, and the integral brake transistor allows dynamic braking with a simple external resistor.
  • Control wiring: a jumper selects 24 V DC sink or source logic.

Reading the catalog number

Following the catalog number explanation in the technical data: 25B is the PowerFlex 525; B is the 240 V AC three-phase input code; 5P0 is the 5.0 A output rating; N is the IP20 / NEMA Open enclosure; 1 is the standard interface module; 0 means no EMC filter; and 4 is the standard braking option. Rockwell’s selection table lists the 25B-B5P0N104 as a frame A drive rated 1.0 HP / 0.75 kW in both normal and heavy duty. An optional IP30, NEMA/UL Type 1 conduit box can be added where a higher enclosure rating is needed.

About brand

Allen-Bradley is the brand of Rockwell Automation for industrial control: ControlLogix and CompactLogix controllers, I/O systems, PanelView operator terminals, PowerFlex drives, motor control and industrial network equipment. The company began in Milwaukee in 1903, when Lynde Bradley and Dr. Stanton Allen formed the Compression Rheostat Company to make the motor speed controller Bradley had invented in 1901. It took the name Allen-Bradley in 1909 and was bought by Rockwell International in 1985. Since 2001 its owner has been Rockwell Automation, which is still headquartered in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

Reading Allen-Bradley catalogue numbers

The first digits of an Allen-Bradley catalogue number identify the platform, which tells you what is compatible with what. 1756 is ControlLogix (chassis-based, used for large process and plant control), 1769 is CompactLogix 5370 with Compact I/O, 5069 is CompactLogix 5380 with Compact 5000 I/O, 1734 is POINT I/O, 1794 and 5094 are FLEX and FLEX 5000 distributed I/O, 1746 and 1747 belong to the older SLC 500 family, 1766 is MicroLogix 1400 and 2080 is Micro800. For drives, 25B is PowerFlex 525 and 22B is PowerFlex 40; in a code such as 25B-D010N114, "D" means 380–480 V, "010" is the output current rating, and N114 instead of N104 means the drive has an integrated EMC filter. Many plants in the region still run SLC 500 and older MicroLogix systems, which Rockwell has discontinued, so exact spares and migration to CompactLogix are both common requests.

Where Allen-Bradley products are used

In Oman and the GCC, Allen-Bradley controllers and drives run on oil and gas facilities, water treatment and pumping stations, cement, food and beverage and packaging plants, and on machines supplied by American OEMs. ControlLogix is often the platform for plant control systems, while PowerFlex drives are used on pumps, fans and conveyors.

Ordering Allen-Bradley products: what we need

Send the full catalogue number and the series letter from the label (for example 1756-EN2T Series D), because firmware and compatibility can change between series. For drives, add the motor power, voltage and filter option. For a discontinued SLC 500 or MicroLogix part, tell us whether you need the exact spare or a migration proposal.
