Allen-Bradley 1762-IQ16 MicroLogix 1200 16-Point DC Input

Description

Sixteen 24V DC inputs for the MicroLogix 1200

The Allen-Bradley 1762-IQ16 is a MicroLogix 1200 expansion input module with sixteen 24V DC sink/source inputs. It connects to a MicroLogix 1200 controller, or to another 1762 expansion module, through a flat ribbon cable with a bus connector, and it adds sixteen digital inputs for pushbuttons, limit switches, proximity sensors and similar devices without changing the controller.

The inputs are divided into two isolated groups, inputs 0 to 7 and inputs 8 to 15. Each input has a nominal impedance of 3 kilohms, an on-state current of 8 mA nominal at 24V and a signal delay of 8 ms on and 8 ms off.

Installation and derating

The module mounts on a DIN rail or a panel, using upper and lower mounting tabs, and it has a latch for the DIN rail. A terminal block with screw terminals accepts solid wire from 0.34 to 2.5 mm² (22 to 14 AWG) and stranded wire from 0.34 to 1.5 mm² (22 to 16 AWG), tightened to 0.90 N•m. The enclosure rating is IP20 and the module must be mounted in a suitable panel.

The module can draw up to 70 mA at 5V DC from the controller expansion bus. Maximum heat dissipation is 5.4 W at 30V DC. The operating range is -20 to +65 °C, but a derating chart limits the number of inputs that can be on at the same time at higher ambient temperatures and voltages, so read it when many inputs are active.

Where it fits

The same installation document family covers other 1762 input modules, for example the 32-point 1762-IQ32T and the 8-point 1762-IQ8. The IQ16 is a good match when a MicroLogix 1200 needs more digital inputs than the controller base unit provides.

Documents and quotation

The Rockwell Automation installation instructions for the 1762-IQ16 are attached. See our PLC and I/O cards catalogue for related controllers and I/O. Confirm the exact catalog number, series letter and firmware or hardware revision on the product label, and the compatibility with your existing system, before ordering. Stock and lead time are confirmed at quotation.

How the 1762-IQ16 Works

Each input of the 1762-IQ16 is an optically isolated DC input. When the field device applies a voltage above the on-state threshold, current flows through the input circuit and the module sets the corresponding bit in the controller input image. Because each group has its own common terminal, the inputs can be wired for sinking or sourcing devices: for sinking inputs the common connects to the negative of the supply and the field device switches the positive, and for sourcing inputs the arrangement is reversed. The two groups can even be wired differently, which helps when a machine uses both PNP and NPN sensors.

The on and off delays filter out contact bounce and short noise spikes. The module exchanges data with the controller over the expansion bus, through the ribbon cable connection to the controller or to the previous expansion module.

1762-IQ16 Selection & Ordering Guide

  • Point count: the 1762-IQ8 provides eight inputs and the 1762-IQ32T thirty-two; the 1762-IQ16 sits in between.
  • Controller: Bulletin 1762 expansion I/O is listed with MicroLogix controllers in the MicroLogix selection guide; check the expansion limits and power budget of your controller.
  • Sensor type: confirm whether sensors are PNP (sourcing) or NPN (sinking) so each group common can be wired correctly.
  • Outputs: for 24V DC outputs, the matching 1762-OB16 is the sixteen-point sourcing output module.

When you request a quote for the 1762-IQ16, quote the series letter on the existing module label. Our team can help confirm the correct ordering code.

Installation & Maintenance

Disconnect power before connecting the expansion cable or removing the module. Mount it on the DIN rail or panel beside the controller, wire each group with its own common, and keep input wiring away from high-voltage and drive cables. In service, compare the input status indicators with the field device states, check terminal tightness and confirm the supply voltage at the terminals.

Typical Applications in Oman & the GCC

  • Pumping station and water network panels reading float switches, pressure switches and feedback contacts.
  • Packaging, bottling and conveyor machines with many proximity sensors and limit switches.
  • HVAC and building services panels collecting status and alarm contacts.
  • Small process and utility skids controlled by a MicroLogix controller.

About brand

Allen-Bradley is the brand of Rockwell Automation for industrial control: ControlLogix and CompactLogix controllers, I/O systems, PanelView operator terminals, PowerFlex drives, motor control and industrial network equipment. The company began in Milwaukee in 1903, when Lynde Bradley and Dr. Stanton Allen formed the Compression Rheostat Company to make the motor speed controller Bradley had invented in 1901. It took the name Allen-Bradley in 1909 and was bought by Rockwell International in 1985. Since 2001 its owner has been Rockwell Automation, which is still headquartered in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

  • 1903: The Compression Rheostat Company is formed in Milwaukee with an initial investment of USD 1,000.
  • 1904: Harry Bradley joins; a crane controller is shown at the St. Louis World's Fair.
  • 1909: The company is renamed Allen-Bradley.
  • 1985: Rockwell International acquires Allen-Bradley.

Reading Allen-Bradley catalogue numbers

The first digits of an Allen-Bradley catalogue number identify the platform, which tells you what is compatible with what. 1756 is ControlLogix (chassis-based, used for large process and plant control), 1769 is CompactLogix 5370 with Compact I/O, 5069 is CompactLogix 5380 with Compact 5000 I/O, 1734 is POINT I/O, 1794 and 5094 are FLEX and FLEX 5000 distributed I/O, 1746 and 1747 belong to the older SLC 500 family, 1766 is MicroLogix 1400 and 2080 is Micro800. For drives, 25B is PowerFlex 525 and 22B is PowerFlex 40; in a code such as 25B-D010N114, "D" means 380–480 V, "010" is the output current rating, and N114 instead of N104 means the drive has an integrated EMC filter. Many plants in the region still run SLC 500 and older MicroLogix systems, which Rockwell has discontinued, so exact spares and migration to CompactLogix are both common requests.

Where Allen-Bradley products are used

In Oman and the GCC, Allen-Bradley controllers and drives run on oil and gas facilities, water treatment and pumping stations, cement, food and beverage and packaging plants, and on machines supplied by American OEMs. ControlLogix is often the platform for plant control systems, while PowerFlex drives are used on pumps, fans and conveyors.

Ordering Allen-Bradley products: what we need

Send the full catalogue number and the series letter from the label (for example 1756-EN2T Series D), because firmware and compatibility can change between series. For drives, add the motor power, voltage and filter option. For a discontinued SLC 500 or MicroLogix part, tell us whether you need the exact spare or a migration proposal.
