Allen-Bradley 1756-IA16 ControlLogix 16-Point AC Input Module
Description
A 120 V AC input card for mains-level field devices
The Allen-Bradley 1756-IA16 reads sixteen 120 V AC inputs, in two groups of eight, with a 74 to 132 V AC operating window at 47 to 63 Hz. It is used on older plants and motor control centres where auxiliary contacts, starter feedback and selector switches are wired at mains voltage rather than 24 V DC.
AC inputs behave differently from DC ones: the delay times are longer, and the off-state limits are set by leakage in the field wiring. The figures below are those that matter when an existing panel is retained and only the PLC cards are being replaced.

Practical wiring points
Because long cable runs at 120 V AC couple capacitively, the 2.5 mA maximum off-state current and 20 V off-state voltage are the limits to compare with the leakage of any neon-lit switch or solid-state output feeding the input. If leakage is higher, a bleed resistor or a lower-impedance device is needed. The input group of eight shares one common, and the isolation rating is 125 V continuous basic, so do not mix different phases within a group.
Ordering notes
A removable terminal block must be ordered separately. Confirm that field devices work in the 74 to 132 V window, since this is narrower than the 240 V ratings of some regional plants; the 1756-IA16I and IM16I are different modules for other requirements. Check the series and any K suffix on the existing module. Values are from the manufacturer technical data and should be confirmed for your own design.
Input delay is given as 10 ms off to on plus 1 or 2 ms filter, and 8 ms on to off plus 9 or 18 ms filter. Inputs are time stamped to plus or minus 200 us, and isolation is 125 V continuous basic, input to backplane and group to group, in two groups of 8 points.
Where the 1756-IA16 is used
The 1756-IA16 brings mains-voltage signals from the field into a ControlLogix chassis. Typical inputs are starter auxiliary contacts in motor control centres, limit and position switches on conveyors and gates, pressure and level switches on pump stations, selector switches and local control stations on panels, and status contacts from packaged equipment that was originally designed around relay logic. Many water, oil and gas, cement and power facilities in Oman were built with this kind of AC control wiring, and keeping the existing field circuits while modernising the controller is often the lowest-risk route.
Retaining the field wiring avoids re-cabling across a running plant, shortens shutdown windows and keeps the existing loop drawings valid. The input card becomes the interface between the old panel world and the newer controller.
Selection and integration
Before choosing this module, confirm the actual control voltage at each input point and compare it with the operating window in the table. Survey the field devices for leakage: neon-lit switches, solid-state relays and long parallel cable runs can all hold an input above its off-state limit and cause a point to read as on when it should be off. Group the inputs so that each group of eight is fed from the same source and phase, and keep a record of which group serves which part of the plant so that isolation during maintenance is straightforward.
Consider the input delay and filter settings when assigning signals. Slower AC inputs are well suited to status and permissive signals but are not the right place for fast counting or timing functions. Use the electronic keying settings in the controller project so that a replacement card is checked against the configuration before it is accepted.
Installation practice
Order the removable terminal block with the module and plan wire labelling to match the existing drawings. Keep 120 V AC input wiring in its own ducting, separated from low-voltage analogue and network cables, and make sure every common is returned to the correct group. Because the module is open-style, it must be installed in a suitable enclosure, and work on the field wiring should follow the plant isolation procedure for mains-voltage circuits.
After the cut-over, test each point from the field device back to the controller tag and confirm that the off state reads correctly as well as the on state, since leakage problems show up as points that never turn off.
Site conditions in Oman and the GCC
The operating temperature limit in the table applies to the air around the chassis, not the outside air. Control rooms and remote I/O panels in the Gulf rely on air conditioning or ventilation to stay inside that range, so a failed cooling unit can quickly push an enclosure beyond it. Fine dust and humidity at coastal and desert sites make closed enclosures and regular cleaning important, and the conformal-coated variant noted in the table is worth considering where the environment is harsh.

About brand
Catalog numbers beginning 1756, 1734, 1746 or 5069 are read at a glance by anyone who maintains Allen-Bradley control panels. The brand, the control hardware name of Rockwell Automation, dates back to 1903 in Milwaukee, USA. Seven Star LLC sources and supplies Allen-Bradley PLC and I/O modules, communication adapters and PowerFlex drives for plants in Oman, matching catalog number, series letter and firmware against the manufacturer's documentation.

Where Allen-Bradley hardware is used
ControlLogix and CompactLogix controllers run packaged equipment and plant utilities: compressor and pump skids, water and wastewater plants, power distribution, material handling and packaging lines. PowerFlex drives control pumps, fans and conveyors. Many SLC 500 racks are still in service.
Ordering Allen-Bradley modules and drives: what we need
Send the full catalog number, the series letter and, for controllers and communication modules, the firmware revision printed on the side label. Compatibility with an existing project depends on these. For PowerFlex drives, give the complete catalog string, which encodes voltage, current rating, enclosure and options, plus the motor nameplate data. For SLC 500 parts, tell us the rack size and processor so that we can check slot and power supply loading in the manufacturer's manuals. A label photo avoids most mistakes.
