Allen-Bradley 5069-IB16 Compact 5000 16-Channel 24V DC Sink Input Module

Description

A 16-channel sinking input module for Compact 5000 I/O

The Allen-Bradley 5069-IB16 is a 16-channel, 12/24V DC sinking input module for the Compact 5000 I/O system used with CompactLogix 5380 and 5480 controllers and the 5069-AENTR adapter. All sixteen inputs are in a single group that shares a return through the module to the SA power negative terminal.

It is a one-slot module with electronic keying, so the width in the cabinet is only 22 mm. It is listed on the Rockwell product page as a Preferred catalog number.

Wiring, power and the terminal block

The module draws 75 mA from MOD power and 200 mA from SA power. Because it uses DC SA power, DC power must be connected to the device that feeds the SA power bus, which can be a CompactLogix 5380 or 5480 controller, a 5069-AENTR adapter or a 5069-FPD field-potential module.

The removable terminal block is not included. Order a 5069-RTB18-SPRING or a 5069-RTB18-SCREW for the field wiring. The wire size is 0.34 to 1.5 mm² (22 to 16 AWG), with a strip length of 10 mm for the spring type or 12 mm for the screw type.

Features and the difference from similar models

The technical data lists reverse polarity protection as supported. Pulse latching, pattern matching, field power loss detection, time stamping and event handling belong to the fast 5069-IB16F, and overrides and extended counters are not supported on either version.

The 5069-IB16K is the conformal-coated edition, and the 5069-IB32 provides 32 inputs in a 1.5 slot housing. Input delay on the standard IB16 is 100 microseconds, against 10 microseconds for the fast module.

Isolation is listed as basic insulation at 250V continuous, with no isolation between SA power and the inputs or between individual input ports, so plan the sensor wiring with that in mind.

Selection checks for the 5069-IB16

Start by confirming that the field devices are compatible with a sinking input. Three-wire sensors must have sourcing (PNP) outputs to drive this module; NPN sensors need a sourcing input module instead. Dry contacts such as limit switches, pushbuttons and relay contacts work with either type as long as they switch the positive supply to the input. Check that the on-state voltage at the terminal stays inside the listed range when the sensor is on, and that the leakage current of two-wire sensors in the off state is below the module off-state current, otherwise the input can read as permanently on.

Count the number of signals per cabinet and the free slots on the controller or adapter. Where a project needs more than sixteen points per slot, compare the 5069-IB32 mentioned above; where time stamping or event tasks are required, the 5069-IB16F is the relevant module.

Configuration and commissioning in Studio 5000

Add the module to the I/O tree of the controller or adapter project with the same catalog number and series as the hardware, and leave electronic keying set so a wrong module cannot be accepted silently. Set the input filter time per application: a longer filter helps with contact bounce and electrical noise from long cable runs, while short filters suit fast proximity sensors on conveyors and packaging lines. After download, force each field device in turn, by operating a switch or presenting a target to a sensor, and confirm the matching bit changes in the controller. Record any input that needs a different filter setting.

Wiring practice and maintenance

Because there is no isolation between channels, all sensors on one module must share a common 24 V DC reference. Run input cables separately from motor and drive cables, use ferrules on fine-stranded conductors, and label each terminal clearly. During planned shutdowns, check the tightness of screw terminals if the screw-type block is used, look for heat discolouration on wiring, and remove dust from the module surfaces with dry, low-pressure air. A removable terminal block allows the module to be replaced without disturbing the field wiring, which shortens repair time.

Cabinet conditions in Oman and GCC plants

The module is specified up to +60 °C, but in Oman the air inside a closed control cabinet in a sunny yard can approach that limit during summer. Use cabinet air conditioning or heat exchangers where needed, keep filter mats clean, and avoid locating PLC panels on sun-facing walls. Fine dust can build up on modules and terminals and attract moisture in humid coastal areas, which can lead to leakage paths and corrosion; good door seals and regular cleaning reduce that risk. For panels exposed to corrosive or very humid atmospheres, review whether the conformal-coated 5069-IB16K is the better selection before ordering.

About brand

Catalog numbers beginning 1756, 1734, 1746 or 5069 are read at a glance by anyone who maintains Allen-Bradley control panels. The brand, the control hardware name of Rockwell Automation, dates back to 1903 in Milwaukee, USA. Seven Star LLC sources and supplies Allen-Bradley PLC and I/O modules, communication adapters and PowerFlex drives for plants in Oman, matching catalog number, series letter and firmware against the manufacturer's documentation.

Allen-Bradley product families listed here

Current controller platforms on this page are ControlLogix, with the 1756-L85E ControlLogix 5580 controller and the 1756-PA72 chassis power supply, and CompactLogix 5380, with the 5069-L320ER and 5069-L340ERM. Distributed I/O is represented by POINT I/O: the 1734-AENTR dual-port EtherNet/IP adapter and the 1734-IB8 digital input module. Allen-Bradley drives listed include the PowerFlex 525 and PowerFlex 755. For installed systems there are SLC 500 parts: the 1746-A10 chassis, 1746-NI16I analog input module, 1747-ASB remote I/O adapter, 1747-KE interface and 1747-M13 memory module.

Where Allen-Bradley hardware is used

ControlLogix and CompactLogix controllers run packaged equipment and plant utilities: compressor and pump skids, water and wastewater plants, power distribution, material handling and packaging lines. PowerFlex drives control pumps, fans and conveyors. Many SLC 500 racks are still in service.

Ordering Allen-Bradley modules and drives: what we need

Send the full catalog number, the series letter and, for controllers and communication modules, the firmware revision printed on the side label. Compatibility with an existing project depends on these. For PowerFlex drives, give the complete catalog string, which encodes voltage, current rating, enclosure and options, plus the motor nameplate data. For SLC 500 parts, tell us the rack size and processor so that we can check slot and power supply loading in the manufacturer's manuals. A label photo avoids most mistakes.
