The Lovato SM1R0400 is a three-pole motor protection circuit breaker with a 2.5 to 4 A thermal range, and it belongs to the Type E (SM1R) version of the SM1 line. It has the same 100 kA breaking capacity at 400 V as the standard SM1P0400, but its data sheet adds the UL 508 / UL 60947-4-1 manual self-protected combination motor controller (Type E) short-circuit ratings. Read the code as family SM1R plus rated current 0400, meaning 4 A. What Type E means for the SM1R0400

A Type E device under the UL standard is a manual self-protected combination motor controller: one unit that disconnects, provides short-circuit and overload protection and, with a suitable contactor, starts the motor. In practice it lets a panel builder satisfy a motor branch circuit with a single breaker instead of a fuse plus overload relay. The SM1R0400 table gives separate figures for motor disconnect, group motor installation and tap conductor protection, so the intended use should be matched to the sheet rather than assumed.

Note the difference to the standard part. The SM1R0400 weighs 390 g against 280 g for the SM1P0160, and its 690 V breaking capacity is 10 kA rather than the 100 kA of the smaller SM1P, so projects at 690 V need to check the table.

How the SM1R0400 trips

A thermal release adjustable between 2.5 and 4 A reacts to sustained overload in class 10A, and the magnetic element trips instantly at 13 times the rated current. A phase-failure feature speeds up thermal tripping when one phase is missing. The adjustable band means one stock item covers 1.1 kW to 1.5 kW motors at 400 V, depending on the exact nameplate.

It slots below the SM1R0650 (4 to 6.5 A) and above the SM1R0250 (1.6 to 2.5 A) in the Type E range, and it combines with contactors such as the BF0910A230 for a compact starter. If a project drawing shows only IEC ratings, the SM1P0400 is the simpler choice; the SM1R0400 is for projects that also quote UL combination controller short-circuit ratings.

Inspect annually for heat marks, particularly where several breakers are mounted close together.
