Lovato SM1P2300 Motor Protection Circuit Breaker 17-23 A

Description

Lovato SM1P2300 motor protection circuit breaker, 17 to 23 A

The Lovato SM1P2300 is a three-pole motor protection circuit breaker whose thermal release is adjustable from 17 to 23 A. It is one of the larger devices of the SM1P family and is chosen for motors of roughly 7.5 to 11 kW at 400 V, such as booster pumps, compressors and medium fans. Seven Star LLC supplies the SM1P2300 in Oman and the GCC as an independent supplier in Muscat.

In the code, SM1P is the family and 2300 stands for 23.0 A, the upper limit of the band. The step below is the SM1P1800 and the step above is the SM1P2500, so a motor near 20 A can be matched to this breaker, while one at 24 A should move to the next size. Notice that breaking capacity falls as the rating rises, so the SM1P2300 behaves very differently from the small 100 kA members of the range.

Why the SM1P2300 breaking capacity needs attention

The figures show Icu of 15 kA at 400 V but a service value Ics of only 5 kA. This means that after a severe fault the breaker may need to be replaced rather than reset. At 690 V both numbers are only 2 kA. Many industrial boards near a transformer have a fault level above these values, so a fuse or a moulded-case breaker upstream is often the correct way to complete the protection scheme.

The catalogue also lists a 5 kA short-circuit rating for the UL motor-disconnect and group-installation duties, with fuse or circuit breaker back-up. Anyone ordering for a UL-documented skid should confirm these values against the panel standard.

How the SM1P2300 protects a 20 A class motor

Set the dial to the nameplate current, for example 19.5 A on a 11 kW pump at 400 V, and the thermal element follows the class 10A curve. The magnetic trip, near 300 A at the top setting, catches short circuits. If one phase fails, the mechanism trips sooner than for a balanced overload, which limits damage to the stator.

Because the breaker is relatively large for the DIN-rail format, the dissipated power is up to 3.41 W per pole. In a crowded panel this heat adds up, so spacing and ventilation should be planned when several SM1P2300 units sit side by side.

SM1P2300 in a starter assembly

Pair the breaker with an 18 A AC-3 contactor such as the BF1810A230 for a motor near 7.5 kW, or with a larger BF25 or BF26 series contactor when the motor is at the top of the band. The breaker gives manual isolation and protection, while the contactor provides remote start and stop and a drop-out on loss of control voltage.

SM1P2300 selection checklist

  • Motor full-load current between 17 and 23 A
  • Prospective fault current against 15 kA Icu and 5 kA Ics at 400 V
  • Back-up fuse or upstream breaker where the fault level is higher
  • System voltage, because the rating drops sharply at 690 V
  • Starting time within class 10A limits
  • Contactor and cable cross-section for the final starter
  • UL or CSA horsepower requirements, if the project asks for them

Installation and maintenance notes

Mount on a 35 mm rail or with screws. Use up to two conductors per terminal, strip 12 mm, and tighten to 2.5 to 3 Nm. Make sure the cable can carry the full 23 A continuously at the panel temperature. Keep some clearance around the breaker for heat dissipation.

Inspect annually for signs of heating, compare the measured motor current with the dial, and operate the handle. After a trip on a fault, always inspect the motor and cable first.

Typical SM1P2300 applications in Oman and the GCC

At this size the breaker appears on booster sets in water networks, compressor packages, cooling tower fans and workshop machinery. In summer the panel temperature can approach the 50 °C compensation limit, so spare derating margin should be kept in mind.

Site conditions in Oman for the SM1P2300

Low-voltage switching and protection devices in Oman often sit in motor control centres and outdoor panels where internal temperatures are high for much of the year. When you select the SM1P2300, check its rated values at your real ambient temperature, as stated in the manufacturer documentation, and confirm the coordination with upstream protection and with the motor or load it serves. Short-circuit levels differ from site to site, so verify the breaking capacity required at the point of installation.

Standardising ratings and coil voltages across a project reduces the number of spare part numbers that need to be stocked. Keeping a small stock of the SM1P2300 and recording settings such as trip ranges or ramp times shortens repair work during a breakdown.

Lovato order codes describe the product. On a contactor such as BF0910A230, "BF09" is the frame and rated current (9 A in AC-3), "10" is the built-in auxiliary contact (one normally open), "A" means an AC coil and "230" is the coil voltage. The coil voltage must match the control circuit exactly, so it is the most common detail to check when replacing one. For motors, a soft starter limits the inrush current at start and stop, while a variable speed drive controls the speed continuously and saves energy on pumps and fans that do not need full flow all the time.

Where Lovato products are used

In Oman and the GCC, Lovato components are built into motor control centres, pump and HVAC panels, capacitor banks for power factor correction, generator and ATS panels, and machine control panels for industry, water and buildings.
