Minimax AMX4004 WEA Aspirating Smoke Detector for Wind Turbines
Description
An aspirating smoke detector built for nacelles and towers
The Minimax AMX4004 WEA is an aspirating smoke detector developed specially for wind turbines. It detects fires very early and has a robust industrial design to withstand the typically raw service conditions found in a nacelle or tower. Minimax states the detector is approved by FM Global and VdS Schadenverhuetung.
A fan inside the housing draws air samples from the monitored area through a pipe network with tiny perforations. The samples pass through up to three different sensors, which analyse them for smoke aerosols and CO fire gases, and an evaluation unit combines the sensor signals. Using several sensors in combination gives early warning with a high level of security against false alarms.

Wind turbine fire risk and control options
Minimax points out that the greatest fire risk comes from electrical switch cabinets and electronic controls, plus hydraulic equipment and the braking system, where fire can spread quickly. A smouldering fire from a defective or overloaded component almost always leads to an open fire and possibly total loss. Monitored areas named in the brochure are the gondola, switch cabinets and transformer.
The integrated air flow monitoring also makes sure that detection keeps working when switch cabinets are cooled by air movement.
The AMX4004 WEA can control an automatic extinguishing system through a fire control panel and, if necessary, shut the turbine down. Early detection can therefore prevent serious consequences, in extreme cases the destruction of the turbine. For a general-purpose Minimax aspirating detector, see the HELIOS AMX5000.
What to confirm before ordering
The datasheet is a two-page overview and does not list electrical ratings, so please request the full technical documentation. Tell us the pipe layout, the areas to be monitored, the sensor combination wanted, the control panel or PLC to connect, and the turbine type.
How the Minimax AMX4004 WEA aspirating detector works
An aspirating detector does not wait for smoke to drift to a sensor. A fan in the housing pulls air through a pipe network with small sampling holes, and the air passes over the sensors in the detector. The AMX4004 WEA can use up to three sensors at once: an optical smoke sensor, an ionization smoke sensor and a fire gas sensor for CO. The evaluation unit combines the signals, so a real fire is recognised early while dust or steam alone is less likely to cause a false alarm. An air flow sensor watches the sampling flow, and a blocked or broken pipe shows as a fault.
Where the AMX4004 WEA is used
- The nacelle of wind turbines, including the switch cabinets and transformer.
- The tower base and the electrical cabinets there.
- Hydraulic equipment and brake areas named by Minimax as fire risks.
- Offshore turbines with salt water and moisture.
- Industrial sites with a harsh atmosphere near refineries and chemical plants.
Selection checklist for the AMX4004 WEA
- Sensor combination: optical, ionization and CO, in the mix the project needs.
- Pipe layout for the nacelle and the tower, within the limits of the design.
- Connection to a fire detection control panel, or by potential-free contacts to a PLC.
- Graded alarms, from the multiway analysis, and the reaction set for each stage.
- Environmental conditions: vibration, temperature swings, moisture, ice and snow.
- Lightning protection and earthing arrangements of the turbine.
- Approvals stated by Minimax: FM Global and VdS.
- Spare filters and service intervals.
Installation, commissioning and maintenance notes
The detector can be placed freely where it suits the nacelle or the tower. Lay the sampling pipe according to the approved design, secure it against vibration, and keep the holes clear of dust and oil. After installation, let the automatic calibration adapt to the ambient conditions, then test with smoke from a suitable test source and confirm the signal at the panel or the PLC. Check the air flow reading at each service, and clean or replace the filter as the maker advises.
Requesting a quotation for the Minimax AMX4004 WEA
Send the turbine type, the areas to protect and the control interface. Seven Star LLC serves industrial customers in Oman and the GCC and replies with a quotation based on the information provided.
Why early detection matters in turbines
A fire at hub height is hard to reach, and a smouldering fault in a cabinet can become an open fire quickly. Early warning gives time to stop the turbine and limit the damage.
Automatic calibration
The detector adjusts itself to the ambient conditions, so it keeps a steady sensitivity as temperature and humidity change.
Air flow monitoring
A drop or rise in air flow beyond the set threshold appears on the display and goes out as a collective fault, so the fire detection function is always supervised.
Service records
Keep the pipe layout drawing, the test date and the filter change date with the turbine file.

About brand
Minimax is a German fire protection company that designs, builds and services fire detection and extinguishing systems for industrial plants, power stations, data centres, warehouses and transport. The brand goes back to 1902, when Wilhelm Graaff launched his conical hand-held Minimax fire extinguisher. Today Minimax is part of the Minimax Viking Group, headquartered in Bad Oldesloe, Germany.
Seven Star LLC is an independent supplier in Oman and lists Minimax fire control panels, detectors, a deluge valve set and the MxSysCon fire control configuration software, supplied with its licence dongle. We also take inquiries for Minimax fire protection components and spare parts identified by part number.

Minimax systems the software and parts belong to
The manufacturer's program covers fire detection and extinguishing control panels of the FMZ family and HELIOS aspirating smoke detectors. On the extinguishing side it builds deluge and other water-based systems, Minifog water mist, Oxeo inert gas and carbon dioxide systems, and spark extinguishing. Panel configuration software is tied to a specific panel generation. We did not find the name MxSysCon in the manufacturer's public documents, so the software version has to be checked against your panel type.

Ordering Minimax items: what we need
Send the Minimax part number, the type and firmware version of the control panel, and a photo of the panel label. For detectors, nozzles or valves, add the nameplate data and the approval the project specifies. Minimax systems are engineered per site, so a component is only correct when it matches the original system documents. We check that match for buyers across the GCC before the order is placed.
Facts checked against published company histories and the 2014 and 2018 ownership announcements, October 2026.
