Brand:

SICK AFS60A-S4AM065536 SSI Singleturn Encoder, 16 Bit

Description

A singleturn absolute encoder with 16-bit SSI output and cable connection

The SICK AFS60A-S4AM065536 is a singleturn absolute encoder: it reports a unique angle within each shaft revolution with a resolution of 65,536 steps, and sends it over an SSI link in Gray code. The position is known immediately at power-up, which suits rotary tables, valve actuators, antenna and camera positioners and any axis where a single revolution covers the whole travel.

The device has an integrated 5 m cable instead of a plug. The universal cable exit can be laid without a bend in radial or axial direction, which helps in tight machine housings. The 60 mm face-mount flange and 10 mm shaft are the same as on the rest of the AFS/AFM60 range.

Singleturn or multiturn?

A singleturn encoder has no memory of how many times the shaft has turned, so it is the right choice when the mechanical travel is less than one revolution or when a gearbox maps the full stroke to one turn. For longer travel, SICK offers the multiturn AFM60 versions in the same family, which add 4,096 revolutions of range; see the encoder pages in the encoders category.

The 0.03 degree error limit is the figure printed for this version, tighter than the 0.05 degree quoted for some siblings. Shock and vibration ratings (60 g and 20 g) are a step lower than for the connector versions, so check them against the machine environment.

Ordering notes

In use, the controller clocks out the 16-bit Gray-coded word at up to 2 MHz and converts it to binary. The electronic SET input lets a technician define the mechanical zero after installation, and the counting direction input removes the need to swap wires when the encoder is mounted on the opposite side of a drive. The shielded cable should be kept away from motor leads, because the stated EMC performance assumes screened wiring.

Confirm before ordering: the SSI frame length that your controller expects (16 bit here), Gray coding, cable length, the shaft and flange dimensions of the host machine, and any coupling needed to absorb misalignment. An incremental alternative from another maker is the Autonics E40S6.

How the SICK AFS60A-S4AM065536 works

The AFS60A-S4AM065536 senses the angle of its shaft. Inside, a coded disc turns with the shaft and is read by optical sensors. The code gives a unique value for each angle, so the encoder always knows where it is, even after a power loss. There are 65,536 steps per turn, or 16 bits. The value is sent to the controller over an SSI link in Gray code. The controller clocks the data out, which keeps the wiring simple.

Installation, commissioning and maintenance notes for the AFS60A-S4AM065536

Fit the encoder to the flange and join the shaft with a flexible coupling so that axial and radial loads stay low. Wire the cable to the controller, keeping it away from power cables. Set the zero position with the SET input and check the counting direction with the CW/CCW input. Check the cable and mounting for wear.

About brand

Machine builders have relied on SICK since 1946 for the sensors that tell a controller where a part, a pallet or a person is. The company, based in Waldkirch, Germany, makes photoelectric, inductive and magnetic sensors, distance sensors and safety devices. Seven Star LLC supplies SICK sensors to maintenance teams and integrators in Oman, mostly as exact replacements identified by type code and part number.

SICK sensor families on this page

Five of the SICK families listed here are described below. The W4 miniature photoelectric sensors include the WTB4-3, a proximity sensor with background suppression. IME is the standard inductive proximity line, and the IME18 is the M18 housing size. RZT7 cylinder sensors fit T-slot pneumatic cylinders and detect the piston magnet. The DT35 belongs to the Dx35 laser distance sensors for mid-range measurement. The microScan3 is a safety laser scanner that guards hazardous zones around machines and vehicles.

Where SICK sensors are used

SICK sensors are fitted on packaging and bottling lines, conveyors, palletizers, warehouse cranes and automated guided vehicles. Safety laser scanners protect robot cells and transfer cars. In process plants, the same proximity and cylinder sensors report valve and damper positions on packaged equipment.

Ordering SICK sensors: what we need

A SICK type code such as IME18-08NPSZW2K packs the whole specification into one string: housing size, sensing range, flush or non-flush mounting, output type and connection. Each variant also has a 7-digit part number, and that number is the safest identifier. Please send:

  • Type code and part number from the sensor label, or a photo of it
  • Output type (PNP or NPN, normally open or closed) and connection (cable length or M8/M12 plug)
  • For microScan3: variant (Core or Pro), interface, protective field range, plus system plug and bracket

We check the code in SICK's documentation and tell you if the manufacturer lists a successor.
