Böhler UV 400 Aluminate-Basic Submerged Arc Flux

Description

Aluminate-basic all-round SAW flux for structural, boiler and pipe steels

Böhler UV 400 is an agglomerated flux of the aluminate-basic type for joining and surfacing applications with general-purpose structural steels, fine-grained structural steels, boiler steels and pipe steels. Böhler Welding characterises it by low silicon and moderate manganese pick-up. It runs on DC and AC, and the good welding characteristics together with the technological properties of the weld metal produced with different wires permit universal use. That makes UV 400 a sensible stock flux for workshops that weld several steel grades with one or two flux types.

Matching wires and use

In Böhler’s wire data sheets UV 400 is listed as a recommended flux for

Union S 2 Si.

(EM12K) and (EH12K), the standard C-Mn wires for general structural steel. Böhler also names it for several seamless flux-cored SAW wires. Aluminate-basic fluxes of this type are generally chosen when a smooth bead and good slag release are wanted across a broad range of plate thicknesses, with the lower silicon pick-up helping weld metal toughness. For the highest toughness at sub-zero temperature or for thick, high-strength sections, a more basic fluoride flux such as

UV 418 TT.

is usually considered.

Storage and flux handling

As with any agglomerated flux, keep the bags sealed and dry until use, redry flux that has been exposed, and avoid mixing different fluxes in the same hopper. Flux depth in the joint, travel speed and stick-out also affect bead shape and porosity, so set them from the procedure qualification record and adjust only within the qualified range. Where recycled flux is used, remove fines and contaminants so that the grain size distribution stays close to the 3 to 20 range given on the data sheet.

About brand

Böhler Welding is the welding consumables brand of voestalpine Böhler Welding, part of the voestalpine group, with a portfolio that covers stick electrodes, TIG rods, solid wires, gas-shielded and self-shielded flux-cored wires and submerged-arc wires and fluxes. The company states more than 100 years of experience. Seven Star LLC, an independent supplier in Muscat, lists Böhler Welding consumables and welding machines, including pipeline electrodes, and sources Böhler Welding consumables for fabricators and pipeline contractors.

Böhler Welding product groups

Beyond the consumables above, Böhler Welding lists strip cladding, wire arc additive manufacturing, metal powders, arc spraying cored wires, ceramic weld backing, brazing consumables and welding automation such as orbital welding and collaborative robots. The pipeline range includes cellulosic FOX CEL electrodes and basic vertical-down FOX BVD electrodes for large-diameter line pipe.

Ordering Böhler Welding consumables: what we need

Give the product name, the AWS or EN classification, the diameter and length, and the packaging you need. For pipeline electrodes also state the pipe grade, wall thickness, welding position and whether sour-service test values are required, because the Böhler Welding data sheets note that some test values are available on request.
