Thermowell and Measuring Insert Construction

Thermowells for the Siemens SITRANS TS500 are offered as threaded, flanged and socket designs, with the threaded family available in straight, tapered and step-down (reduced-tip) forms; the reduced tip shortens thermal response time, while the tapered profile improves resistance to flow-induced vibration in high-velocity lines. Sheath and thermowell materials extend well beyond standard 316L stainless steel to 310 stainless, Alloy 600 (Inconel), Incoloy 800, Hastelloy C276 and Monel 400, with maximum service temperatures ranging from around 500°C for Monel up to approximately 1150°C for Alloy 600. That material range is what allows one sensor platform to cover cooling-water service and fired-heater outlets alike. Thermowell mechanical suitability is assessed against ASME PTC 19.3 TW, and Siemens references EN/IEC 60751 and DIN 43710 for element and thermocouple characteristics.

Resistance-thermometer inserts can be specified in 2-wire, 3-wire or 4-wire configuration, with tolerance classes B, A and AA to IEC 60751. The 4-wire Class AA arrangement is the one to select where lead resistance and self-heating must be removed from the uncertainty budget, for example on fiscal metering skids or reactor-control points.
