Yokogawa Vortex Flowmeter VY Series
Overview: Successor to a Field-Proven Vortex Platform
The Yokogawa Vortex Flowmeter VY Series is Yokogawa’s latest vortex flowmeter, succeeding the long-serving digitalYEWFLO series while inheriting its unique, field-proven detection structure and combining it with advanced digital technology for enhanced self-diagnosis and remote maintenance. Because the VY series retains the same face-to-face lengths as the previous YEWFLO series, it can be installed as a like-for-like replacement in an existing pipe run without any additional piping work.
As an authorized supplier of Yokogawa flow instrumentation, Seven Star LLC sources and supplies the VY series vortex flowmeter to refineries, power generation facilities, and process plants across Oman and the wider GCC. Because vortex meter sizing and shedder bar type selection materially affect measurement performance across liquid, gas, and steam applications, Seven Star LLC helps engineering teams configure the correct VY variant for each measurement point.
Measurement Principle
Vortex flowmeters operate on the Von Karman effect: as fluid flows perpendicular to a bluff body (the shedder bar), alternating vortices form on both sides, creating a differential pressure that causes the shedder bar to oscillate at a frequency directly proportional to flow velocity. The VY series inherits Yokogawa’s unique structure of two piezoelectric flow sensors and one built-in temperature sensor integrated with the shedder bar, capturing vortex signals across the entire shedder bar for stable measurement even with short straight pipe lengths, regardless of installation orientation.
Yokogawa’s proprietary Spectral Signal Processing (SSP) analyzes the frequency of the detected signal, allowing only the true vortex frequency to pass through a segmented band-pass filter while eliminating noise from piping vibration – a critical capability since the two polarized piezoelectric elements do not detect vibration in the flow or vertical directions, and any remaining lift-direction noise is further reduced by adjusting element outputs. Because the frequency-based output has no zero-point fluctuation and is directly proportional to flow rate, the VY series avoids both the zero-drift issues and square-root calculations required by orifice-plate flow measurement.
Engineering Design of the VY Series
The General Type covers connection sizes from 15 to 400 mm (flange) with accuracy of ±0.75% of reading for liquids and ±1% for gas and steam, process temperature -40°C to +250°C, and pressure up to ASME Class 900. Specialized variants extend this envelope significantly: the High Temperature type reaches +450°C, the Cryogenic type reaches -196°C, the High Pressure type is rated to ASME Class 1500, and the Dual-Sensor (welded) type combines two sensors in series for applications demanding the highest reliability, spanning the full -196°C to +450°C range in a single body.
The Built-in Temperature Sensor type (Pt1000 in the shedder bar) enables simultaneous process temperature measurement and temperature-compensated flow calculation, while the Reduced Bore type integrates upstream and downstream reducers directly into the sensor body, simplifying installation on lines with seasonal flow-rate swings. HART 7 communication with analog input support enables mass flow rate and energy flow rate calculation for liquids, gas, and steam using built-in saturated and superheated steam tables, and the VY series complies with SIL2 functional safety (IEC 61508), NAMUR NE21/NE107, and a wide range of explosion-protection certifications including IECEx, ATEX, and FM.
Key Features
The Yokogawa Vortex Flowmeter VY Series delivers robust, self-diagnosing flow measurement across liquid, gas, and steam service. Key characteristics include:
- Von Karman effect measurement with proprietary Spectral Signal Processing (SSP) for vibration immunity.
- General Type sizes up to 400 mm; specialized types extending -196°C to +450°C and up to ASME Class 1500.
- Removable shedder bar allowing partial cleaning or replacement without removing the entire flowmeter.
- Built-in temperature sensor option (Pt1000) for simultaneous mass/energy flow calculation.
- SIL2 functional safety compliance (IEC 61508) with comprehensive self-diagnosis.
- HART 7 communication with built-in saturated/superheated steam tables.
- Face-to-face length compatible with the legacy YEWFLO series for drop-in replacement.
Industrial Applications
The VY series is deployed across refinery steam distribution systems, power generation boiler feedwater and steam metering, enhanced oil recovery steam injection, and general process plants measuring liquids, gases, or steam. Its wide range of specialized body and shedder bar types – high temperature, cryogenic, high pressure, reduced bore, and dual-sensor – allow a single vortex platform to cover applications from cryogenic gas service through superheated steam without changing measurement technology.
Seven Star LLC supports refinery instrumentation teams, power generation operators, and process plant engineers across Oman, Muscat, Sohar, and the broader GCC region with sourcing of Yokogawa VY series vortex flowmeters, helping projects standardize on a proven, self-diagnosing flow measurement platform.
