Dakota NDT PCX8-DL Precision Thickness Gauge

Description

Overview

The Dakota NDT PCX8-DL Precision Thickness Gauge is an ultrasonic measurement solution engineered for high-precision thickness evaluation in industrial, manufacturing, and quality assurance environments. Using advanced ultrasonic pulse echo technology and multiple measurement algorithms, the PCX8-DL enables accurate thickness readings even on thin materials — down to 0.15 mm (0.006″) — with excellent repeatability and reporting flexibility.

This model supports three core measurement modes — Echo Echo (E-E) for thin materials, Interface Echo (I-E) for coated and thicker parts, and Plastic Mode (PLAS) for very thin plastics — providing adaptable performance across diverse materials such as metals, plastics, composites and laminates.

Ultrasonic Thickness Measurement Principle

Ultrasonic thickness gauges operate by emitting high-frequency sound waves into the material. The transducer sends a pulse that travels through the material, reflects back from the far surface, and returns to the transducer. The gauge calculates the time between transmission and reception and converts it into thickness using known sound velocities in the material.

The PCX8-DL enhances this principle with:

  • Auto transducer recognition

  • Multiple calibration methods (1-Point, 2-Point, Material presets)

  • Digital signal processing for noise reduction

  • Scan, B-Scan, and statistical display modes

This leads to precise, repeatable measurements even in thin and acoustically complex materials.

Choosing Between E-E, I-E and PLAS Modes

The measurement mode should follow the part and the result required. Echo-Echo is the usual choice for thin metals and for measuring the base material under paint or coatings, since it times successive back-wall echoes. Interface-Echo gives the total thickness, including coating, on thicker parts. Plastic mode is intended for very thin plastics where the echoes are weak and closely spaced. Recording the mode, probe and calibration method in the inspection procedure for each part keeps results consistent between operators and shifts.

Calibration and Set-Up

  • Fit the delay-line transducer and confirm that the gauge has recognised it
  • Use a material preset for quick checks, or a one- or two-point calibration on reference samples of the actual material for the best accuracy
  • Store frequently used set-ups in the calibration memories to save time on repeat jobs
  • Set upper and lower limits for each part so that the pass/fail alarm flags out-of-tolerance readings immediately

Reporting and Data Management

Batches and grid files can be named to match part numbers, drawings or inspection lots, and each reading is stored with a date and time stamp. Transferring data by USB or Bluetooth to DakMaster software turns a day of measurements into a traceable report without manual transcription. The B-Scan and run chart views are useful for showing thickness variation along a formed or machined part.

Troubleshooting

Scattered readings on thin parts usually come from uneven couplant, a worn delay-line tip or the wrong mode for the material. If the gauge struggles to find echoes on plastics, check the velocity setting and the probe condition before assuming a fault. Replace delay lines once their faces are visibly worn.

Quality Control in Oman and the GCC

Manufacturers, fabrication shops and inspection companies in the region increasingly have to prove thickness compliance to their customers. The Dakota NDT PCX8-DL combines precision measurement with the data records needed for that evidence.

About brand

Ultrasonic thickness gauging is the core of Dakota NDT, the Scotts Valley, USA maker that many inspectors still know as Dakota Ultrasonics. Its instruments measure remaining wall on corroded pipe and vessels, check precision parts, find flaws in welds and monitor bolt elongation.

Seven Star LLC is the Dakota NDT agency for Oman and the GCC. We list Dakota corrosion and precision thickness gauges, flaw detectors, transducers, delay line tips and calibration blocks, and supply them with the manufacturer's documentation.

Dakota NDT product families

Corrosion thickness gauges form the largest group: the CMX10-DL with full waveform capture, the CMX, CX and ZX series and the MX2-DL. For thin or tight-tolerance material Dakota builds the precision line, made up of the PZX1-DL, the PCX8-DL and the PMX series. The RX8-DL sonic tester, the PMX4-DL and the R9 sit in the specialty group. Flaw detection is handled by the handheld FX71-DL and the bench-top FX81-DL, and bolt tension by the BT1-DL, the BT2-DL and the MultiMax remote monitoring system. Dual element transducers pair with corrosion gauges, single element and delay line probes with precision gauges. DakMaster and DakView software take care of data transfer and reporting.

Where Dakota ultrasonic thickness gauges are used

Typical jobs are wall-loss surveys on pipelines, tanks, boiler tubes and pressure vessels in oil and gas plants and power stations, thickness checks on machined, drawn or molded parts, weld inspection in fabrication shops, and bolted joints on flanges and turbines where clamp load matters more than torque.

Ordering Dakota gauges and probes: what we need

A useful inquiry names the gauge model, the material, its expected thickness span, the surface temperature and whether the surface is coated. For transducers send the frequency, element diameter, connector type and the gauge the probe will be used with. For calibration blocks give the material and the step sizes you need. If you already own a Dakota instrument, a photo of its label and of the current probe lets us check the match against the manufacturer's documentation.
