Evident 72DL PLUS Precision Ultrasonic Thickness Gauge

Description

Lab-quality precision thickness measurement for thin layers and multilayer coatings

The Evident 72DL PLUS is a portable precision ultrasonic thickness gauge with a 7 inch touchscreen, available as a Standard Frequency model (0.2 to 30 MHz) and a High-Frequency model (20 to 125 MHz) for ultra-thin materials. Multilayer Measurement Software displays up to six independent layers at once, such as multilayer paint on metal or composites, plastics and thin metal parts. Measurement rates reach 2 kHz with a 60 Hz A-scan update, and five layouts (A-scan, B-scan, A/B-scan, trend and zoom) show thickness changes. The gauge is designed for IP65 and weighs 2.08 kg (4.6 lb).

Applications and workflow

Evident lists automotive paint layers, medical tubes, turbine blades and paint on composites as typical applications. A Guided Inspection part map shows thickness measurement locations and inspection status, and the My Applications menu stores single-layer, multilayer and reduction-rate setups so a routine job starts from the first screen. The PC Interface Application builds part maps and applications, reviews and approves data files and generates reports from templates. The gauge uses single element transducers; confirm that the probe frequency suits the thinnest layer.

Selection and use

Choose the High-Frequency model only when materials are ultra-thin; the Standard Frequency model measures single and multilayer materials at higher rates. Corrosion surveys on steel pipe normally use dual element transducers, which this precision gauge does not list, so compare it with a corrosion gauge such as the Evident 39DL PLUS. Other precision instruments are listed under Precision Thickness Gauges, including the Waygate Krautkramer CL Go+.

How the Evident 72DL PLUS works

An ultrasonic thickness gauge sends a sound pulse from a probe into the material and times the echo that comes back from the far side. Knowing the speed of sound in the material, the gauge calculates the thickness. The 72DL PLUS is a precision unit with a 7 inch touchscreen. The Standard Frequency model works from 0.2 to 30 MHz, and the High Frequency model works from 20 to 125 MHz for very thin materials. The Multilayer Measurement Software can show up to six independent layers at once, such as paint layers on metal.

Where the 72DL PLUS is used

  • Multilayer paint on metal or composites.
  • Automotive paint layers.
  • Medical tubes.
  • Turbine blades.
  • Plastics and thin metal parts.

Selection checklist for the 72DL PLUS

  • Standard Frequency or High Frequency model.
  • Resolution of 0.1, 0.01 or 0.001 mm on the standard model.
  • Measurement rate of 2 kHz for 1 to 3 layers.
  • Up to six layers displayed.
  • Layouts: A-scan, B-scan, A/B-scan, trend and zoom.
  • Single or two-point automatic calibration.
  • Storage of 2 GB.
  • USB, RS-232 and wireless LAN.
  • Power by 24 V adapter or a 73 Wh battery with 8 hours of use.
  • Operating range of -10 to 50 degrees C and IP65 design.

Installation, commissioning and maintenance notes

Choose the probe from the thickness range and the material, because the usable range depends on the probe frequency and type. Calibrate the gauge on a reference sample of the same material, with the correct sound velocity, and apply couplant on the surface. Use the Guided Inspection part map to follow the measurement points. Keep the probe cables and the connectors clean, charge the battery, and record the calibration before each job.

Requesting a quotation for the Evident 72DL PLUS

Send the model, the material and the thickness range. Seven Star LLC serves industrial customers in Oman and the GCC and replies with a quotation based on the information provided.

Display

The display is a 7 inch WVGA PCAP touchscreen with a refresh rate of 60 Hz.

Ruggedness

The gauge is designed and tested for IP65, and it is tested for drop, shock and vibration to MIL-STD-810.

Weight and size

It weighs 2.08 kg and measures 238.76 x 172.72 x 86.36 mm.

Gauge records

Record the probe, the calibration and the readings for each inspection.

Choosing the 72DL PLUS model and probes

Pick the Standard Frequency model for general thickness work on steel, with a range of 0.20 to 635 mm, and pick the High Frequency model when the layers are very thin, down to resolutions of 25, 2.5 and 0.25 micrometres. Match the probe to the material, the thickness and the surface condition. For coated parts, the multilayer function reads each coat in one measurement, which saves time against separate readings.

Data handling and connectivity

The 2 GB memory holds about 400,000 readings, and the data can move by USB, RS-232 or wireless LAN. The Evident Connect cloud service helps to share the results between the field and the office.

Documents and quotation

The standard package contains the gauge, AC charger adapter, getting started guide, USB drive with the manual, USB cable and transport case; the High-Frequency model also includes a BNC to Microdot transducer cable. Probes, reference standards, a lithium-ion battery and I/O cables are optional. Send the layer structure, thickness range and probe preference with your inquiry; confirm the model and Multilayer software before ordering.

About brand

Evident makes nondestructive testing, remote visual inspection and material analysis instruments, building on more than a century of Olympus heritage. Its inspection business joined Wabtec Corporation in 2025, and the Evident name is planned to transition to Wabtec Inspection Technologies in 2027. Seven Star LLC supplies Evident ultrasonic thickness gauges, flaw detectors, eddy current instruments and XRF analyzers to inspection teams in Oman and the GCC on inquiry.

Evident ultrasonic and eddy current instruments

The range includes handheld ultrasonic thickness gauges such as the 39DL PLUS and 45MG, EPOCH conventional flaw detectors, NORTEC eddy current flaw detectors and OmniScan phased array systems, together with a broad line of transducers, probes and accessories. Gauges for corrosion mapping and wall thickness checks sit alongside weld inspection instruments, so one manufacturer can cover several inspection methods on a refinery shutdown or a pipeline project.

Material analysis and visual inspection

Evident also lists Vanta handheld XRF analyzers for alloy identification and positive material identification, and IPLEX video borescopes for remote visual inspection of pipes, vessels and machinery. Specifying the correct model depends on the material, the thickness range, the code or procedure and the site conditions, and we check the order code against the manufacturer's documentation before quoting.
