Donaldson SG-C 1650-11000 Flanged Cyclone Separator

Description

A large flanged cyclone separator for heavy condensate loads

The Donaldson SG-C 1650-11000 is a carbon steel cyclone separator for central compressed air plants, sized from 1,650 to 11,000 m3/h at 7 bar(g). It separates liquid water and solid particles from air or from other fluids of PED group 2, and is installed straight after the aftercooler or wherever a compressor station produces a large amount of condensate that would otherwise burden filters and dryers downstream.

A centrifugal insert makes the air spin so that droplets are thrown to the wall and run into the sump. Donaldson states a retention above 99 percent for liquid droplets and no maintenance of the separating parts, apart from the automatic drain.

Superplus units weigh slightly more because of the level-controlled drain, for example 28 kg for SG-C 1650 and 129 kg for SG-C 7500.

Sizing at a pressure other than 7 bar

Nominal flow is given at 7 bar(g), so the data sheet supplies a correction factor fp for other operating pressures: 0.25 at 1 bar, 0.50 at 3 bar, 1.00 at 7 bar, 1.25 at 9 bar, 1.50 at 11 bar and 2.13 at 16 bar. Divide the actual volume flow by fp to find the size to select. The worked example in the sheet converts 4,200 m3/h at 9 bar(g) into 3,360 m3/h at the nominal condition, which selects SG-C 3500.

Choose the standard time-controlled drain where a high amount of condensate has to be removed and the opening time can be adjusted to the application. Choose Superplus when compressed air loss must be avoided and a condition-monitoring alarm contact is wanted. Donaldson names industrial gases, automotive, food processing and machinery builders as the target industries. Mount the separator upright, connect the drain kit to a safe condensate collection point and, as with any pressure vessel, check the local rules for periodic inspection.

About brand

Donaldson is the American filtration company founded in Minnesota in 1915. It started when Frank Donaldson Sr. built an air cleaner for a tractor engine that kept failing in dusty fields. It is now headquartered in Bloomington, Minnesota, and makes filters and filtration systems for engines, hydraulics, compressed air and gases, dust collection and process liquids.

Seven Star LLC is an independent supplier in Muscat. We list Donaldson compressed air dryers and filters, gas filter housings, activated carbon adsorbers, hydraulic and fuel filtration and dust collectors, and supply them and their replacement elements in Oman and the GCC.

Milestones

  • 1915: Frank Donaldson Sr. builds an air cleaner for a tractor that kept failing in a dusty field; the family starts Donaldson Company in Minnesota.
  • 1917: Air cleaners are supplied for artillery tractors.
  • 1920s: Exhaust products are added after crop fires caused by engine sparks.
  • 1974: Donaldson acquires Torit, the dust collector business.
  • 2015: The company marks its 100th year.

Compressed air quality is set by ISO 8573-1 classes for particles, water and oil. A typical instrument air system uses a coarse filter and a fine coalescing filter before the dryer, an adsorption dryer for a low pressure dew point (for example -40 °C), and a dust filter after it. An activated carbon stage removes oil vapour where the air touches food or is breathed. Heatless dryers use some of the dry air to regenerate the desiccant, while heat-regenerated and zero-purge types save that air on larger systems.

Where Donaldson products are used

In Oman and the GCC, Donaldson filters and dryers are used for instrument and plant air in oil and gas, refining, power and desalination plants, for breathing air, in food and pharmaceutical production, on hydraulic systems and fuel storage, and in cement and bulk handling.

Ordering Donaldson products: what we need

Send the model and size from the nameplate. For dryers and filters, add the flow (m³/h or scfm), working pressure, inlet temperature, required dew point or ISO 8573-1 class, and the supply voltage. For replacement elements, send the element part number or the housing model.
