Hydac MFDBN160AULF10A1.1/16-3B3.4 Duplex Spin-On Filter
Description
A dual-can spin-on filter that is quick to service
The Hydac MFDBN160AULF10A1.1/16-3B3.4 (HYDAC part number 2064368) is an in-line duplex spin-on filter from the MF, MFD and MFDS family. Two filter heads and elements are mounted end to end, so you get the quick, tool-free element changes of spin-on cans with the flow capacity of two cans. This code is rated 30 gpm (114 L/min) at a working pressure of 8 bar (120 psi) with a 10 micron Betamicron low-collapse element.
The head is aluminum and the can is steel, with a combined connection for 1 1/2 inch NPT and 2 inch SAE Code 61 flange, a 50 psid bypass and a plugged indicator port.

Order code explained
MFD BN 160 A U LF 10 A 1 . 1 / 16-3 B3.4: MFD is the dual-head end-to-end filter, BN the Betamicron low-collapse media, 160 the size, A the 120 psi pressure rating, U the UN element thread, LF the 1 1/2 inch threaded and 2 inch flange combination, 10 the micron rating, A no indicator, the first 1 the type number, the second 1 the modification number, /16-3 the combined NPT and SAE Code 61 flange ports and B3.4 the 50 psid bypass, standard on BN elements. In the datasheet the 16-3 port code is listed for the side-by-side MFDS filters, so confirm the port arrangement against the drawing.
Using it
The datasheet says MF filters suit hydrocarbon-based fluids only and are not suitable for high-water-based fluids or phosphate esters. Typical applications listed include agricultural, automotive, construction, gearbox, industrial, pulp and paper and steel industry equipment. Note that the maximum allowable working pressure drops to 60 psi when certain static VMF indicators (B, BM, E, ES, GC, LE or LZ) are fitted, so check the indicator choice. Spare elements are the size 160 type, and two are needed per filter.
Spin-on cans are quick to change but should be replaced as a set when the indicator trips. Mount the filter with the cans pointing down and leave room below for removal, and keep a spare pair of elements, since the datasheet lists size 160 elements as the replacement part.
Where the system cannot be stopped, consider a bypass or a changeover arrangement, because a spin-on element has to be replaced with the line depressurised. The 50 psid bypass opens when the elements load up and the indicator port allows a gauge or switch to be fitted later, so plan that port location when you install the filter.

How the MFDBN160AULF10A1.1/16-3B3.4 works
Oil enters the aluminum head through the side inlet port and is divided between two spin-on cans mounted end to end. Each can holds a size 160 Betamicron® (BN) low-collapse element, so the two elements share the flow and give a larger dirt-holding area than a single can of the same size. Clean oil leaves through the side outlet port. If the elements become loaded, or the oil is cold and thick at start-up, the differential pressure rises until the 50 psid (3.4 bar) bypass valve opens. This protects the elements against collapse, which the datasheet rates at 80 psid (5.5 bar) for BN, P and AM media.
The A indicator code means the filter is supplied with the indicator port plugged. A static VMF indicator or a visual gauge can be added later. The datasheet notes that the maximum allowable working pressure of all MF, MFD and MFDS filters drops from 120 psi (8 bar) to 60 psi (4 bar) when VMF indicator types B, BM, E, ES, GC, LE or LZ are used.

Selection & ordering guide
The MFD code builds up in a fixed order, and changing one field gives a different filter. Points to check before ordering:
- Size: 160 is rated 30 gpm (114 L/min) per can; the 180 is rated 60 gpm (227 L/min) per can and is 11 lb instead of 8.8 lb.
- Media and rating: BN elements are offered in 3, 5, 10 and 20 µm. P (paper) and AM (water removal) media are also listed for size 160.
- Bypass: B3.4 (50 psid) is standard on BN and AM elements. B1.7 (25 psid) is standard on paper. KB (no bypass) is not available with NPT ports.
- Pressure code: A is 120 psi. Y is 60 psi, used when an E-type static pressure gauge is fitted, with a B1.7 bypass.
- Indicator: A (plugged) on this code; static VMF indicators are listed for sizes 80, 85, 160 and 180.
- Replacement elements: order two size 0160 elements of the same media and rating, for example 0160 MA 010 BN for a 10 µm BN element (confirm the exact element code with HYDAC).
If you send us the nameplate or the old part number, our team can help confirm the correct ordering code for the MFDBN160AULF10A1.1/16-3B3.4 or an equivalent HYDAC model.
Installation & maintenance
- Fit the filter only on hydrocarbon-based fluids that are compatible with NBR seals, aluminum and steel. The datasheet says MF filters are not for high-water-based fluids or phosphate esters.
- Keep the fluid temperature between –10 °C and +100 °C (14 to 212 °F). HYDAC asks to be consulted for use below –10 °C.
- Respect the 26 ft-lb maximum bolt torque on SAE flange connections to avoid damaging the aluminum head.
- Leave at least 1.5 in (38.1 mm) below each can for removal.
- Change both elements at the same time, lubricate the seals with clean oil and tighten by hand as described for spin-on elements.
- Fill the system and bleed air before running at full flow.

About brand
HYDAC is the German hydraulics group known for hydraulic filters, accumulators and electronic pressure and temperature sensors. It was founded in 1963 in Sulzbach, Saarland, by Werner Dieter and Otmar Schön. The name comes from "hydraulic accumulator", the first product it made under licence. It is still a family company headquartered in Sulzbach.
Seven Star LLC is an independent supplier in Muscat. We list HYDAC filters, filter elements, accumulators, pressure transmitters and switches, and supply them for hydraulic power units, turbines, compressors and mobile machines in Oman and the GCC.

Most hydraulic failures start with dirty or wet oil. That is why a system has filters at several points: a pressure filter in front of sensitive valves, a return filter that cleans what comes back to the tank, and a breather that stops dust and humidity entering as the oil level moves. The filter element's rating (for example 3, 10 or 25 µm) and its material decide what cleanliness class the oil reaches. On HYDAC sensors, the type code also sets the pressure range, the output and the connector. For example, HDA 4445-A-400-000 is a 4-20 mA transmitter for 0-400 bar.
Where HYDAC products are used
In Oman and the GCC, HYDAC filters, accumulators and sensors are used on turbine and compressor lube oil systems, hydraulic power units, offshore and marine hydraulics, cranes, presses, steel and aluminium plants, and construction and mobile machines.
