The Siemens IF963-X27 module (6ES7963-3AA10-0AA0) for SIMATIC S7-400 is an interface submodule that provides an RS422/RS485 physical interface for point-to-point (PtP) coupling with the CP 441 communication processor (CP 441-1/-2, 6ES7441-xAA05-0AE0 generation). It plugs into an interface slot on the CP 441 and takes no separate slot in the S7-400 rack.

RS422/RS485 uses differential signalling. Compared with single-ended RS232, it allows longer cable runs and gives better noise immunity. For this reason the X27 submodule is chosen instead of the IF963-RS232 when the serial device is further from the S7-400 rack or when the link runs through an electrically noisy plant area.

The front connector is a 15-pin sub-D female socket. In four-wire RS422 operation, the transmit pair is on pins 2 and 9 and the receive pair on pins 4 and 11. In two-wire RS485 operation, pins 4 and 11 carry both transmit and receive data. Pin 8 is the isolated functional ground. The choice between four-wire and two-wire mode is made in the CP 441 parameter assignment, not on the module.

Siemens requires shielded connector housings with the cable shield bonded to the housing over a large area at both ends. The shield must never be connected to GND, and GND (pin 8) must be connected at both ends; the manual warns that either mistake can destroy the submodules.

Permitted cable length falls as the speed rises: 1200 m at 19 200 bit/s, 500 m at 38 400 bit/s, 250 m at 76 800 bit/s and 200 m at 115 200 bit/s. Before inserting or removing the module, unplug the power supply module or remove the CP 441 from the rack.

A protocol restriction applies: with the 3964(R) and RK512 procedures, the X27 module can only be operated in four-wire mode. Two-wire RS485 operation is used with the ASCII driver.
