Hypertherm Powermax30 AIR Portable Plasma Cutter

Description

Handheld plasma cutter with its own air compressor

The Powermax30 AIR is Hypertherm’s smallest handheld plasma system in the Powermax family and the one that carries its own air supply. A built-in compressor means it can cut metal in places where shop air is unavailable or the air quality is poor, with nothing more than a single-phase supply. Hypertherm rates it at 8 mm (5/16 in) recommended cut capacity and 16 mm (5/8 in) severance, using a 30 A output at 83 V (2.49 kW at the torch).

The unit weighs 9.5 kg with its 4.5 m Duramax LT hand torch, so one person can carry it to a vehicle, a roof or a field site. Auto-Voltage technology accepts 120 to 240 V single-phase, with plug adapters included, and a continuous pilot arc lets the operator cut grate or rusted metal without retriggering.

Where it fits and how to configure it

The Powermax30 AIR suits automotive repair, metal art and signage, plant and property maintenance, HVAC and mechanical contracting, training workshops and agricultural equipment maintenance. It covers thin and medium plate in one machine: standard consumables for general cutting at higher power, and FineCut consumables for cleaner cuts on thin sheet.

Hypertherm lists three regional power supply versions, 088096 for CSA markets, 088098 for CE markets and 088103 for CCC, each as a complete system with Duramax LT hand torch with 4.5 m lead and work clamp with 4.5 m lead. The standard consumable set for the 30 A hand torch is shield 420399, retaining cap 420135, nozzle 420134, swirl ring 420133 and electrode 420132; electrodes and nozzles are packed in fives, and a combination pack of two electrodes and two nozzles is 428350.

Two practical points apply to any plasma on a generator or at height. The brochure calls for a 5.5 kW engine drive for full 30 A output. The operator manual notes that cutting performance can fall at altitude because of the effect on air compressors, so cut speed should be adjusted to the result on the plate. Recommended genuine accessories include a face shield, flip-up eyeshades with a shade 5 lens, circle cutting guides for circles up to 70 cm, and a dust cover.

About brand

Plasma cutting is the field Hypertherm has worked in since 1968, from Hanover, New Hampshire, USA. Its systems range from air plasma units carried by hand to mechanized plasma for CNC tables, backed by CNC controls, nesting software and torch consumables.

Seven Star LLC lists Hypertherm plasma cutting systems from the Powermax, HPR and XPR families and supplies them to fabricators and maintenance shops in Oman.

Hypertherm plasma families listed here

The number in each Hypertherm model name is its output current class in amperes:

  • Powermax30 XP and Powermax125: air plasma systems, from portable to heavy duty
  • Powermax65 SYNC and Powermax105 SYNC: the SYNC generation of Powermax
  • HPR400XD: HyPerformance mechanized plasma
  • XPR300: X-Definition mechanized plasma

The listing also includes the Powermax45 and 85 SYNC, XPR170 and XPR460. The manufacturer also lists HPR800XD and MAXPRO200, together with Duramax torches, EDGE Connect CNC and ProNest software.

Where Hypertherm systems are used

Hypertherm names heavy equipment, industrial pressure vessels, job shops, steel service centers, shipbuilding and structural steel as its main industries. Powermax units are used for hand cutting and gouging in workshops and on site, and can also be run on a cutting table with a machine torch. HPR and XPR systems are built into CNC machines for production cutting of plate, a common setup in GCC fabrication yards.

Ordering Hypertherm equipment and consumables: what we need

For a system, send the model, the input voltage and phases at your site, the torch type (hand or machine) and the lead length. Hypertherm sells most systems under a configuration part number, so send that number if you have it. For consumables, send the system model, the torch model, the cutting current and the process (cutting, gouging, shielded or fine cut), or simply the part numbers printed on the old parts. For mechanized systems, tell us the make of the cutting table and CNC.
