Flowserve WIK/WIKO API 610 BB5 Barrel Pump
Description
Flowserve WIK and WIKO: API 610 BB5 double-case barrel pump
The Flowserve WIK is a horizontal, multistage, double-case barrel pump built for the most demanding high-pressure and high-temperature duties in the process and power industries. It is a diffuser-style, between-bearings machine that follows the API 610 BB5 pump type and ISO 13709, and it is intended for unspared service where an unplanned stop is expensive. The WIKO is the extension of the same family for discharge pressures above 450 bar.
This page describes the WIK and WIKO series as a range. Because each barrel pump is configured to a specific duty, the exact number of stages, materials, seal arrangement and driver are defined during selection rather than by a single ordering code. Seven Star LLC supplies Flowserve pumps in Oman and the GCC as an independent supplier in Muscat and will help you turn a process datasheet into a clear enquiry.
The manufacturer notes that the WIK originates from the Pacific IJ pump brand and that its stiff-shaft rotor philosophy is what gives it stable behaviour at high speed and pressure.

The figures above are the standard operating window published by the manufacturer. Installations beyond that window exist as fully engineered hydraulics and pump packages, so a duty outside the table is not automatically excluded.
How a double-case barrel pump works
In a barrel pump the hydraulic assembly, called the inner element or cartridge, is a complete multistage pump that slides into an outer cylindrical casing. The outer barrel contains the discharge pressure and is closed with a heavy end cover, while the inner diffuser stages raise the head step by step. Because the outer casing is radially split and sealed by the pressure itself, joint integrity improves as pressure rises, which is why this layout is preferred for injection and boiler-type duties.
The WIK rotor is designed around stiff-shaft criteria. A stiff rotor keeps its first critical speed well above the operating range, which limits shaft deflection, protects the internal running clearances and helps the pump tolerate long periods of continuous operation. The manufacturer points out that speed and pressure limits must be reviewed together with this stiffness requirement, so the maximum permitted speed changes with the number of stages.
Maintenance is usually done by withdrawing the complete inner element and replacing it with a spare cartridge, so the outer barrel and the process pipework can stay in place. For plants that cannot accept long outages this is one of the main reasons to choose the barrel construction.
Where the WIK fits in the pump and system selection
The WIK sits at the top of the pressure range in the Flowserve between-bearings portfolio. Lower-pressure multistage duties are normally handled by axially split or single-casing designs, while the WIK and WIKO take over when pressure, temperature or reliability requirements call for a double-case barrel. For vertical can-type services the related Flowserve VPC double-case pump covers a different layout, and mechanical seal series such as DHTW, UHTW and QBU are commonly specified on high-energy pumps of this class.
A complete WIK package normally also includes a motor or turbine driver, coupling, baseplate, seal flush plan, lube oil system and instrumentation. Defining these items early avoids rework, particularly the seal arrangement and the vibration and temperature monitoring that unspared pumps typically require.
WIK selection and ordering checklist
- Rated and maximum flow in m3/h, with minimum continuous flow requirement
- Required differential head or discharge and suction pressure in bar
- Pumped liquid, density, viscosity, vapor pressure and any CO2, H2S or chloride content
- Normal and maximum pumping temperature
- Net positive suction head available at the pump
- Material class requirements and applicable customer specification
- Driver type, frequency, speed limit and whether a gear or variable speed drive is used
- Seal and flush plan preferences, and required instrumentation
- Standard WIK or WIKO, based on the 450 bar threshold
- Test requirements, documentation level and site conditions
A pump of this size is configured to the duty point, so it is more reliable to supply the process datasheet than to select by size code alone.
Installation, commissioning and maintenance of WIK pumps
Foundation, baseplate grouting and pipe strain are the first topics to settle on a high-pressure barrel pump. Nozzle loads should be checked against the allowable values for the casing, and alignment between driver and pump has to be verified hot as well as cold when the pumped liquid is at elevated temperature. Warm-up procedures matter on hot services because the thick barrel and inner element expand at different rates.
During commissioning, confirm correct rotation, seal flush flow, lube oil pressure and minimum flow protection before running at full load. Record baseline vibration, bearing temperature and seal chamber conditions so later trends have a reference.
For long-term care, plan the spare inner element, the mechanical seal cartridges, wear parts and bearings as one spares strategy. Keeping a spare cartridge on the shelf shortens an outage to the time needed to swap the element.
Typical WIK and WIKO applications in Oman and the GCC
In Oman and the wider GCC the WIK family fits high-pressure water injection for reservoir support, CO2 and pipeline transportation, refinery and gas-plant process services and thermal power plant duties. The manufacturer lists power generation, including nuclear, renewable and geothermal, and oil and gas from upstream to downstream among its target industries. Published literature for the pump covers water injection, CO2 injection and pipeline pumps as well as general oil and gas barrel pumps.
Site conditions in the region bring their own requirements: high ambient temperature, dust and humidity near the coast, and sometimes sour or saline process fluids. These points should be stated on the enquiry so that materials, seal plans and auxiliary cooling are matched to the plant.

FAQ
Questions about the Flowserve WIK/WIKO API 610 BB5 Barrel Pump
Answers from our engineering team on installation, compatibility and integration.
01What does BB5 mean for the WIK pump?
In API 610 terminology BB5 describes a between-bearings, radially split, double-case (barrel) multistage pump. The WIK follows this layout: an inner diffuser-style pump element sits inside an outer pressure-containing barrel, which is what allows it to handle very high discharge pressures.
02What is the difference between WIK and WIKO?
Both belong to the same family. According to the manufacturer, the standard WIK range covers pressures up to 450 bar, while the WIKO designation applies to pressures above 450 bar. The exact construction for a given duty is confirmed during selection.
03What operating window does the WIK cover?
The published standard range is flows to 2,000 m3/h (8,800 gpm), heads to 7,000 m (23,000 ft), pressures to 450 bar (6,200 psi) and temperatures to 425 °C (800 °F). The manufacturer notes that engineered installations beyond this window exist, so a duty outside it should still be submitted for review.
04Is the WIK suited to unspared service?
Yes, it is positioned by the manufacturer for unspared operation in critical high-pressure and high-temperature duties. The design uses stiff-shaft rotor criteria, and maximum speed varies with the number of stages.
05Which industries use WIK and WIKO barrel pumps?
The manufacturer lists power (including nuclear, renewable and geothermal) and oil and gas across upstream, midstream and downstream. Typical duties include water injection, CO2 and pipeline transportation and high-pressure process service.
