Grundfos Hydro MPC Booster Set
Overview
The Grundfos Hydro MPC is a factory-built booster set that transfers and boosts clean water with two to six CR or CRE vertical multistage pumps connected in parallel. The pumps, manifolds, isolating and non-return valves, pressure transmitter, pressure gauge and control cabinet are mounted on one common base frame, and the complete system is preconfigured and tested at the factory. Grundfos lists water-supply systems, irrigation, industrial applications, commercial buildings and high-rise buildings as its main duties, with a published performance range of up to 1,460 m³/h and 155 m head at a maximum operating pressure of 16 bar.
Seven Star LLC supplies the Grundfos Hydro MPC to consultants, MEP contractors and facility owners in the Sultanate of Oman and across the GCC. Our Muscat engineering team helps you size the pump count, choose between the Hydro MPC-E and Hydro MPC-EC variants and confirm the manifold, voltage and option codes before an order is placed, so the set that arrives on site matches the plant-room layout and the building load.
Operating Principle of the Grundfos Hydro MPC
Every pump in a Grundfos Hydro MPC is controlled individually by the CU 352 multi-pump control unit, which holds application-optimised software and the hydraulic and electrical curve data of the installed pumps. When taps open, water is first drawn from the diaphragm tank, if one is installed. Once the pressure falls to the cut-in value, the first speed-controlled pump starts and its speed rises to meet demand. As consumption increases, further pumps are cut in until their combined output matches the demand, and all pumps in operation run at equal speed. When consumption falls, pumps are cut out one by one while the set outlet pressure is held constant.
Because the controller knows the curve of each pump and reads the inlet and outlet pressures, it can work out the duty point of every pump and decide when cutting a pump in or out gives the best efficiency. At very low or zero demand the stop function switches the last pump to on/off operation, which protects the shaft seal from overheating and keeps the pumped water from warming up. An optional pilot pump can take over at these low flows, reducing the required diaphragm tank size and the running hours of the main pumps. The practical result is constant pressure at the taps with a minimum number of pumps running.
Engineering Design of the Grundfos Hydro MPC
The hydraulic core of the Grundfos Hydro MPC is the Grundfos CR range. CR pumps are non-self-priming vertical multistage centrifugal pumps with inlet and outlet in line at the base, a cast-iron pump head and base, and all hydraulic parts in stainless steel EN 1.4301 / AISI 304. Each pump has a maintenance-free cartridge-type HQQE shaft seal with silicon carbide faces and EPDM elastomers, and on motors from 11 kW the seal can be replaced without removing the motor. The inlet and outlet manifolds are stainless steel (AISI 316 / EN 1.4571 / EN 1.4404) as standard, with PN 16 flanges to EN 1092-2 from DN 80 to DN 400, and every pump can be removed without disturbing the pipework on either side of the manifolds.
Two speed-controlled Grundfos Hydro MPC families are offered. Hydro MPC-E systems from 0.37 to 22 kW use CRE pumps with permanent-magnet MGE motors and integrated frequency converters, whose total efficiency Grundfos states exceeds the IE5 level of IEC 60034-30-1. Hydro MPC-EC systems from 30 kW use CR pumps, each connected to its own Grundfos CUE frequency converter in the control cabinet. The cabinet can sit on the pump base frame, on its own floor base up to 2 metres from the pumps, or on a wall, and the CU 352 in the cabinet door has a colour display, ten buttons and two indicator lights. The IO 351 module exchanges digital and analogue signals with the rest of the electrical installation.
Key Features of the Grundfos Hydro MPC
The Grundfos data booklet highlights the following capabilities for the Grundfos Hydro MPC.
- Two to six identical CR or CRE pumps in parallel on one base frame, factory configured and tested before shipment.
- Constant-pressure control with automatic cascade operation, so the number of running pumps always follows the actual consumption.
- Pump curve data loaded at the factory, used by CU 352 to optimise cut-in and cut-out points and to keep pumps away from unsuitable operating ranges.
- Standby pumps, automatic and forced pump changeover, and a pump test run that exercises idle pumps so they do not seize during long standstills.
- Dry-running protection based on inlet pressure, tank level, pressure switches or analogue sensors, with manual or automatic reset after water shortage.
- Proportional-pressure control, soft pressure build-up for filling empty pipes, setpoint ramping, up to six alternative setpoints and a clock program for up to ten events.
- A log function, specific energy calculation with a connected flowmeter and export of logged data as a CSV file through the built-in Ethernet port.
- Fieldbus integration through CIM modules for PROFIBUS, LonWorks, Modbus, BACnet MS/TP, GSM/GRM and Industrial Ethernet.
Industrial Applications
In Oman most buildings above a few floors depend on a booster set between the ground or roof storage tank and the risers, because municipal supply pressure alone cannot reach the upper levels. The Grundfos Hydro MPC is a common choice for residential towers, hotels, hospitals, shopping malls and office blocks in Muscat, Duqm and Salalah, where demand swings sharply between night-time minimum and morning peak. Proportional-pressure control compensates for friction losses in long supply mains feeding housing compounds and villages, and the clock program and alternative setpoints suit landscape and golf-course irrigation, which Grundfos uses as a worked example in the booklet.
Industrial users apply the Grundfos Hydro MPC to process-water supply, RO feed and permeate transfer in desalination and water-treatment plants, wash-down networks in food and beverage factories, and utility water in the Sohar and Rusayl industrial estates. Facility managers value the Grundfos Hydro MPC standby-pump logic and dry-running protection where a pump trip must not interrupt supply. Seven Star LLC supplies complete sets and spare CR pumps on request with engineering support in Muscat, and can match the Hydro MPC with the Grundfos SP submersible borehole pump that fills the storage tank upstream.

In the GCC the heaviest demand comes from building services, water supply and desalination pretreatment.Ordering Grundfos pumps and parts: what we need
The nameplate shows a type designation, a product number and a production code. The product number is the surest reference for an identical pump or for the correct spare kit, so send it with the model line. For a new selection give the flow and head, the liquid with its temperature and any solids or chemicals, suction conditions, motor voltage, phase and frequency, and the pipe connections. For an SP pump add the borehole diameter, static and dynamic water level and the cable length. For a DME state the dosing rate, back pressure and chemical.Browse Grundfos products by category: Pumps.
