Elkhart Brass Spit-Fire 8394-02 2000 gpm Dual Handwheel Monitor

Description

A 2000 gpm brass monitor for large flows

The Elkhart Brass Spit-Fire 8394-02 is the high-flow manual monitor in the Elkhart industrial range. It is rated for 2000 gpm (7550 LPM) at 200 psi (14 bar) and has a 4 in fully vaned waterway to keep stream reach and performance high at large flows. Elkhart states it is FM Approved to FM 1421 and suitable for corrosive and non-corrosive environments, and the data sheet lists the CE mark.

The 8394-02 uses a dual handwheel control, with the lower handwheel staying stationary while the monitor turns a full 360 degrees. A tiller bar version is sold as the 8394-121. The nozzle is supplied separately.

Pairing nozzles and oscillators

Elkhart recommends the SM-2000B X-Stream, CJ-K, a model 84 butterfly valve, the 181-3 deluge tip and the 284-B stream shaper with the Spit-Fire. The monitor is FM Approved for use with the WPO-2000 water powered oscillator, giving automatic horizontal sweep without electric controls, and a Spit-Fire model (8394-053) is the monitor shown in the catalog for the Elkhart GEN-II ERCM electric remote-controlled system.

At 2000 gpm the reaction force on the riser is substantial, so the support, flange and anchoring need to be checked by the designer with the chosen nozzle. The data sheet includes a pressure loss curve for the 4 in inlet and 3.5 in outlet.

Elkhart instruction sheet 98071010 for the 8394-02 calls for a 4 in 150 lb ANSI companion flange on the supply pipe (Elkhart recommends the 81317001 companion flange kit), eight 5/8-11 UNC grade 5 bolts 2-1/2 in long, or 4-1/2 in with a wafer butterfly valve, with Loctite 242 and torque of 60 to 70 ft-lb in increments of about 20 ft-lb. The up and down handwheel turns with the monitor while the left and right handwheel stays fixed, and grease fittings on both rotation joints should be greased routinely with Mobilux EP2 or equivalent. After emergency use, inspect the monitor and nozzle for damage and check the swivel joints for leaks during a nozzle flow test.
