Elkhart Brass Copperhead 8593-02 Tiller Bar Fire Monitor

Description

A brass manual monitor for fixed fire protection

The Elkhart Brass Copperhead 8593-02 is a manual tiller bar monitor for fixed installations on tank farms, process units, loading areas and similar hazards. It is built from marine-grade brass (UNS-C83600) for corrosive and seawater environments and has a full 3 in unobstructed waterway with cast-in vanes, described by Elkhart as a patented vaned elliptical waterway that keeps friction loss low and the stream tight. The data sheet lists it as FM Approved to FM 1421 and carries the CE mark.

The nozzle is sold separately, which lets the designer match the stream and flow to the hazard. The Copperhead family also includes the 8593-03 dual handwheel version and the 8593-IV tiller bar version with a built-in valve.

Nozzles, oscillation and selection

Elkhart recommends pairing the Copperhead with nozzles such as the SM-1250B X-Stream, the IMS-500 Select-O-Stream, the HF-13 Hydro-Foam nozzle, the CJB and CSW-LB, and accessories such as the 181 deluge tip and the 282-B stream shaper. The monitor is FM Approved for use with the Elkhart WPO-2000 water powered oscillator, which automates horizontal oscillation without an electric control unit.

Choose the tiller bar when quick manual aiming matters and the dual handwheel 8593-03 when finer positioning is preferred. Check the pressure drop against the pump or supply curve, since the Copperhead can lose up to 27 psi at 1000 gpm. Verify that the riser and supports can withstand the nozzle reaction force for the chosen nozzle.

Elkhart Brass instruction sheet 98428000 covers the 8593-02 and describes three base options: a 3 in NPT base, a 3 in 150# flat faced flange and a 4 in 150# flat faced flange. For flanged installs Elkhart recommends its companion flange kits (81315001 for 3 in, 81317001 for 4 in), four 5/8-11 UNC grade 5 bolts for the 3 in flange or eight for the 4 in flange, 2-1/2 in long (4-1/2 in with a wafer butterfly valve), Loctite 242 on the threads and torque of 60 to 70 ft-lb in steps of about 20 ft-lb. Raised face flanges need uniform tightening because a cocked monitor can fracture the cast flange base. The piping must withstand a horizontal reaction force of at least 950 lb at the height of the discharge elbow.
