Brand:

Elkhart Brass Stingray 8393 Low-Profile Fire Monitor

Description

A low-profile monitor for tight spaces

The Elkhart Brass Stingray 8393 is a manual monitor with a deliberately low profile, so it fits under overhead pipework, on decks and in other places where a taller monitor would not clear. Elkhart rates it for 1250 gpm (4750 LPM) at up to 200 psi (14 bar) through a full 3 in unobstructed waterway, and states it is FM Approved to FM 1421 and suitable for corrosive and non-corrosive environments. The brass construction is intended for seawater and corrosive use.

Elevation is by handwheel, with -60 to +90 degrees (150 degrees) of vertical travel, while the monitor rotates 360 degrees continuously by hand. A version with a built-in ball valve is sold as the 8393-IV.

Elkhart recommends the SM-1250B, IMS-500, IMS-1000, J, HF-13 nozzles and the 181 deluge tip or 282-B stream shaper with the Stingray.

Installing and checking the Stingray

The riser must withstand the nozzle reaction force with a straight stream flowing parallel to the ground. Elkhart gives the formulas: NR = 1.5 x d squared x NP for straight bore nozzles and NR = 0.0505 x Q x square root of P for combination fog nozzles, where Q is flow in gpm and P is pressure at the nozzle base. If the reaction force would exceed 632 lb, an orifice plate must be used at the monitor inlet.

Because the vertical movement uses worm gearing, no vertical lock is needed, but the horizontal movement should always be locked when the monitor is left unattended. After use in freezing weather the monitor should be drained with the discharge at its lowest vertical position.

Maintenance points and documents

Move the monitor through its full range each month and check lubrication, particularly in corrosive or icy climates. Grease fittings on the up-down and left-right joints should be greased routinely to expel water and contaminants, and Elkhart suggests Mobilux EP2 or equivalent. Check fasteners and set screws where vibration is present, and maintain the paint according to the environment.

Elkhart also lists PED certificates for the 8393, 8393-A, 8393-FW, 8393-H and 8393-IV variants, a dimensional drawing file, a parts list and a separate instruction sheet for the 8393-IV on its product page.
