Brand:

Elkhart Brass WPO-2000 Water Powered Monitor Oscillator

Description

Automatic monitor sweep without electric controls

The Elkhart Brass WPO-2000 is a water powered monitor oscillator. It is installed between a monitor flange and the supply piping, valve or hydrant flange and uses the water flow itself to sweep the monitor back and forth at up to 30 degrees per second, so a fixed manual monitor covers a wide area without anyone standing at it and without electric power or controls. Elkhart calls it the most versatile and reliable water powered monitor oscillator available, and states that it is FM Approved and suitable for corrosive and non-corrosive environments.

It is modular, which means it can work with Elkhart Copperhead and Spit-Fire monitors as well as other makes, and it supports monitors with flow rates up to 2000 gpm (7570 LPM). The monitor is not included.

Speed and travel range can be adjusted from easily accessible external controls while the system is in operation, and a manual override allows manual control at any time.

Where it is used

Elkhart lists oil refineries, tank farms, oil rigs, petrochemical plants, fueling areas, docks, heliports, railroad yards, coal storage, lumber and paper mills and chemical plants as applications. Typical uses are unattended protection of tanks, loading racks and process structures where a wide arc and steady water application are needed.

The unit can be tested with a garden hose without flowing the monitor, which is useful for periodic testing in a plant where discharging the full flow is difficult. The data sheet adds that the oscillator waterway is maintenance free.

Selection notes

Match the oscillator inlet and outlet flange to the monitor and riser, and check the pressure available: the unit needs at least 10 psi to operate and tops out at 200 psi. Specify the arc needed from the 15 to 120 degree range, and confirm that the monitor weight and the added height are acceptable for the support. Elkhart publishes engineers specifications for use with the Copperhead and Spit-Fire, plus a manual, a brochure and a tank farm fire protection note for the WPO-2000. Compare the monitors in the table below.

Elkhart industrial monitor Rating and control
Copperhead 8593-02 / -03 / -IV 1250 gpm, 3 in waterway, tiller bar, dual handwheel or built-in valve
Stingray 8393 1250 gpm, low profile, handwheel elevation, optional built-in ball valve (8393-IV)
Spit-Fire 8394-02 / 8394-121 2000 gpm, 4 in waterway, dual handwheel or tiller bar
Sidewinder 8392 500 gpm, 2 in waterway, compact tiller bar monitor
Hydrant mount 8393-H 1250 gpm, mounts on a 2.5 in hydrant outlet

Confirm before ordering

Confirm the monitor model, flange standard, supply pressure, flow and arc, and whether the project accepts a water powered unit or needs an electric remote-controlled system.
