Elkhart Brass 8393-H Hydrant Mount Stingray Fire Monitor

Description

A monitor that mounts on an existing hydrant outlet

The Elkhart Brass 8393-H is a Stingray 8393 monitor on a hydrant elbow and bracket assembly, so it can be attached to a 2.5 in hydrant discharge without new riser pipework. That turns a yard hydrant into a fixed manual monitor position for tank yards, plant roads, loading areas and other hazards where a fixed monitor is needed quickly. Elkhart rates it at 1250 gpm (4750 LPM) and 200 psi (14 bar) with a full 3 in unobstructed waterway, and the catalog states it is FM Approved to FM 1421 for corrosive and non-corrosive environments.

Vertical travel is -70 to +80 degrees (160 degrees) by handwheel and the monitor rotates 360 degrees continuously. The brass construction suits corrosive and seawater use.

Installation sequence and cautions

The elbow is attached to the hydrant outlet with the flange parallel to the ground, the hydrant bracket is placed on the barrel with the appropriate U-bolt, and the support bracket is bolted to it. Elkhart gives torque values of 140 ft-lb for the support bracket bolts and large U-bolt nuts, 70 ft-lb for the 3.5 in U-bolt nuts and 100 ft-lb for the monitor flange nuts, with second nuts locked against the first.

The elbow flange and monitor flange have a non-standard bolt pattern on purpose, so that only the 8393 monitor made for the hydrant elbow will fit; use of any other monitor is prohibited because the 8393 low discharge height reduces the forces on the mounting. The same 632 lb reaction limit applies, and the installer must check it for the nozzle used.

In operation, the handwheel raises the discharge when turned counterclockwise and lowers it clockwise, with internal stops at each end of travel; the horizontal twist-lock should always be engaged when the monitor is unattended. After use in freezing weather, shut off the hydrant, open the butterfly valve, lower the discharge fully and let the hydrant automatic drain empty the monitor. The optional butterfly valve is opened and closed by handwheel with a spinner knob and has a visual position indicator on the gear actuator.

Confirm before ordering

Check hydrant outlet thread and size, barrel diameter for the U-bolt (8 in or 10 in), nozzle and whether the butterfly valve kit is needed. A hydrant that already feeds a pump or system must be able to supply the flow. See the wider range of Fire Fighting equipment, including the NAFFCO 150-NFH pillar fire hydrant.
