Schneider Electric TM3DQ16T TM3 16-Output Transistor Module

Description

TM3DQ16T Modicon TM3 discrete output module: what it is and how the code reads

The TM3DQ16T is a Schneider Electric product described in the datasheet as: discrete output module, Modicon TM3, 16 outputs transistor PNP, screw. The TM3DQ16T is an expansion output module of the Modicon TM3 range that adds sixteen source (PNP) transistor outputs at 24 V DC to a compatible controller. Seven Star LLC supplies the TM3DQ16T in Oman and the GCC as an independent supplier based in Muscat.

Decoding the reference: TM3 is the expansion-module range, DI/DQ/AI marks the function (discrete input, discrete output, analogue input) and the number is the channel count (16 transistor outputs). The TM3DQ16T is compatible with Modicon M241; Modicon M251; Modicon M221; Modicon M262.

How the TM3DQ16T works with the controller

The outputs are positive-logic (source) transistor outputs rated 500 mA transistor output each at 24 V DCtransistor. The maximum voltage drop is <0.4 V and leakage 0.1 mA. Response is listed at 450 µs maximum (turn on); 450 µs maximum (turn off).

Transistor outputs are solid-state, so they do not wear with switching like relays, but they drive DC loads only and have limited inrush capability, which is why the datasheet states a maximum tungsten load. Typical loads are indicator lamps, small solenoid valves, relay coils and contactor coils; larger inductive loads need a flyback diode or a suppressor across the coil so that switching spikes do not stress the output stage.

Where the TM3DQ16T fits in the Modicon system

The TM3DQ16T attaches to the side of a Modicon controller and communicates over the internal expansion bus; it is powered through the expansion bus connection (the current draw is listed in the datasheet). Compatible controllers listed are Modicon M241; Modicon M251; Modicon M221; Modicon M262.

Related TM3 modules include TM3DI8 (inputs), TM3DQ16T (outputs) and TM3AI4 (analogue inputs); a typical machine mixes them with a TM221 or TM241 base unit such as TM221CE24R or TM241CE24R. Check the bus power budget when many modules are stacked.

Selection and ordering checklist for the TM3DQ16T

  • Load must be 24 V DC and within the per-output current; use relays or contactors for bigger or AC loads.
  • Check total module current and group common supply capacity.
  • Use flyback protection for inductive loads.
  • Count outputs plus spares; sixteen per module.
  • Compatibility: Modicon M241; Modicon M251; Modicon M221; Modicon M262.

Installation, commissioning and maintenance of the TM3DQ16T

Clip the module on the DIN rail next to the controller and engage the expansion bus connector, then wire the removable terminal block. Dimensions are 27.4 mm (W) x 90 mm (H) x 84.6 mm (D) and weight 0.11 kg. Power off before attaching or removing modules, label the terminal block and keep wiring tidy for service.

After power-up, configure the module in the programming software and verify each channel with a simulator or live signal. Retain a documented I/O list. Modules have no user-serviceable parts: replace as a unit and restore the removable terminal block.

Typical applications of the TM3DQ16T in Oman and the GCC

The TM3DQ16T extends controllers on skids, pump stations, packaging machines, HVAC plant and utilities across Oman and the GCC. In those environments good cabinet cooling and clean wiring matter more than module choice.

TM3 module variants compared with the TM3DQ16T

Reference Function Channels and signal
TM3DI8 Discrete input module 8 inputs, 24 V DC, sink or source
TM3DQ16T Discrete output module 16 transistor outputs, source (PNP), 24 V DC
TM3AI4 Analogue input module 4 inputs, current or voltage, configurable

Pick the variant by signal type first, then by channel count. For the TM3DQ16T the function is discrete output module with 16 transistor outputs, so a machine that needs both inputs and outputs will normally use more than one module type on the same controller. Expansion modules are specified by their own reference, so list each one with quantity when requesting a quotation.

About brand

Schneider Electric is the French group for energy management and industrial automation: low and medium voltage switchgear and circuit breakers, motor control, drives, PLCs, power monitoring, UPS systems and building management. Its history goes back to 1836, when the brothers Adolphe and Eugène Schneider took over the iron and steel works at Le Creusot in Burgundy. Over the 20th century the company left steel and heavy engineering and became an electrical group through acquisitions such as Merlin Gerin, Télémécanique, Square D and Modicon. Its head office is in Rueil-Malmaison near Paris, and its shares are listed on Euronext Paris.

Milestones

  • 1836: The Schneider brothers acquire the Le Creusot works; the business grows in steel, locomotives and heavy engineering.
  • 1975: First investment in Merlin Gerin, a French maker of electrical distribution equipment.
  • 1988–1992: Télémécanique, Square D (USA) and Merlin Gerin join the group, making it an electrical specialist.
  • 1997: Modicon, the company behind the first programmable logic controller, joins the group.
  • 1999: The group takes the name Schneider Electric.
  • 2007 and 2014: APC (UPS and data centre power) and Invensys (process automation) are acquired.

Choosing Schneider Electric breakers and motor control

Circuit breakers are chosen by current and breaking capacity. Acti9 miniature circuit breakers (iC60, C120) protect final circuits up to 125 A. ComPacT NSX molded case breakers cover about 16 to 630 A, and the letter after the frame size sets the breaking capacity: B, F, N, H, S, L from lowest to highest. MasterPacT air circuit breakers are used as main incomers on large switchboards. For motors, a TeSys contactor with an LRD overload relay or a GV2 motor circuit breaker suits direct starting, an Altistart soft starter reduces starting current, and an Altivar drive controls speed. The breaking capacity must always be at least the prospective short-circuit current at the point of installation.

Where Schneider Electric products are used

In Oman and the GCC, Schneider Electric equipment is found in main and sub-main switchboards of commercial and residential buildings, motor control centres in water, oil and gas and industrial plants, substations protected by Sepam and Easergy relays, data centres powered by Galaxy and APC UPS systems, and buildings controlled by EcoStruxure Building Operation.

APC by Schneider Electric: UPS and critical power

Since 2007, APC has been part of Schneider Electric and is now its product brand for uninterruptible power supplies, replacement batteries, battery packs, network management cards and rack power distribution. Our APC catalogue covers Smart-UPS line-interactive and on-line models, Easy UPS On-Line, the modular Symmetra LX, RM and PX ranges, Silcon three-phase systems and their spare part kits, and the RBC cartridges that keep them running.
