Brand: Magnaflux
Magnaflux 14AM Fluorescent Magnetic Particle Suspension
Description
Ready-to-use fluorescent particle bath for very fine discontinuities
Magnaflux 14AM is a ready-to-use, oil-based fluorescent magnetic particle suspension. It combines the manufacturer’s 14A magnetic particles with Carrier II NDT-approved suspension oil in a prepared bath, designed for locating very fine discontinuities in critical parts. Indications show as bright fluorescent green under UV black light, and the sheet describes it as an ideal choice for precision, safety-critical or high-stress components and for extending the life of valuable mag particle equipment.
The data sheet says 14AM meets major industry and NDT specification requirements, including aerospace, ASTM and ISO 9934, and that it is listed on the QPL SAE AMS 3045-1S and AMS 3046-1S Qualified Product List and approved for use by Pratt and Whitney.
Features and benefits
- Ready to use: 14A particles pre-mixed in Carrier II petroleum distillate
- High sensitivity with minimal background fluorescence
- Slow evaporation and low susceptibility to bacteria or fungus, so baths last longer
- Protects equipment from internal rust and corrosion and eliminates post-inspection corrosion treatment on most alloys
- Optimised particle size and shape to reduce clumping
- Available as aerosol or 5 gal pail liquid

Ordering and selection guide
| Pack | Part number |
|---|---|
| Aerosol can, case of 12 | 01-0145-78 |
| 5 gal / 18.9 L pail | 01-0145-40 |
Choose the aerosol for field inspections and the pail for a horizontal wet bench, where 14AM replaces the need to mix particles into oil. If you prefer to build a water-based bath from powder, see 20B, which uses the same 14A particles. 14AM is a petroleum distillate suspension and should not be mixed with water.
Preparation, use and bath maintenance
Aerosol cans are used as supplied: shake well, hold 7 to 9 inches (18 to 24 cm) from the part, apply by the continuous or residual method until covered, and inspect under black light. For the liquid, fill the tank to the proper level and mix for at least 15 minutes until the particles are evenly dispersed. Do not add extra Carrier II or mix with water.
The sheet asks for suspension concentration and contamination to be checked at least once a day or as the specification requires, measured by settling volume in an ASTM pear-shaped centrifuge tube. The Magnaflux tube 8493 (100 mL, stem graduated 0 to 1 mL in 0.05 mL steps) is the one recommended. Contaminated or long-used suspensions should be replaced, and parts demagnetised before cleaning.
Applications
Named uses: very fine to fine discontinuities, critical applications, parts after secondary processing, in-service inspections and high-strength alloys. For Gulf operators, that fits rotating-equipment shafts, gear teeth, fasteners and repair welds in compressors and turbines. A UV lamp and a darkened inspection area are required, and the bath should be protected from the heat of open workshops using the 6 to 48 C working range as a guide.
14AM compared with 7HF aerosol
Both products are oil-based wet-method suspensions in Carrier II, and both come in aerosol cans, but they serve different inspection conditions.
| Property | 14AM | 7HF |
|---|---|---|
| Indication | Fluorescent yellow-green under UV | Black in visible light |
| Particle size | 5 to 12 micrometres | Mean below 2 microns |
| SAE sensitivity | 8 to 9 | Above 6 |
| Settling volume | 0.10 to 0.40 mL | 1.20 to 2.40 mL |
| Extra equipment | Magnetizing device and UV light | Magnetizing device |
| Bulk pack | 5 gal pail | Aerosol only |
The printed sensitivity figures come from different test rings (ASTM E1444 for 14AM, ASTM E3024 for 7HF), so they should not be compared as a ranking. Match the product to the procedure and viewing conditions instead.
Planning a fluorescent wet bench with 14AM
A fluorescent bath only gives results when the whole station is in order. Besides the 14AM suspension, the data sheet lists a magnetising device and a UV light source as required equipment, and a darkened inspection area is needed to see the indications. Plan for a settling tube to check the concentration daily, a way to demagnetise parts and a clean tank. The printed usage temperature is 6 to 48 C, so keep the bath and the shop within that window.
Storage and bath records
Keep aerosol cases and pails at 10 to 30 C, in a ventilated area away from heat and strong magnetic fields. Write the fill date, batch number and the daily settling volume on the bath log, together with the black light intensity and the ambient white light reading. The printed settling volume range of 0.10 to 0.40 mL is the figure to compare against, and a bath outside it should be corrected or replaced according to the procedure.
