The rope access kit lets the instrument be strapped to the leg or attached to a harness, with the display rotated to portrait. A 1/4-20 threaded insert accepts third-party mounts. Optional wireless LAN through a USB dongle connects the instrument to the Evident Connect cloud for firmware upgrade, file backup and remote file access.

Selection and use

Evident lists wind turbine towers and blades, bridges and structural steel, pipelines, rail and aircraft maintenance as typical uses. Choose the standard or ISO 22232-1 compliant version according to the procedure, and add the corrosion module if the same instrument must also do thickness scanning. The 6 h battery is much shorter than that of the larger EPOCH 650, so plan spare batteries for long shifts. Related instruments are listed under Handheld Flaw Detectors, including the Waygate Krautkramer USM 100.

How the Evident EPOCH 6LT works

An ultrasonic flaw detector sends short sound pulses into a material through a transducer and listens for the echoes. A pulse that meets the back wall or a defect, such as a crack or a lack of fusion, returns to the transducer, and the instrument shows the time and the amplitude of each echo on the screen. Since the speed of sound in the material is known, the time shows the depth of the reflector. The EPOCH 6LT works in pulse echo, dual and through transmission modes, with a tunable square wave pulser, a receiver with a gain up to 110 dB and two independent flaw gates.

Where the EPOCH 6LT is used

  • Weld inspection on structures and pipework.
  • Rope access work on towers, tanks and bridges.
  • Corrosion and wall thickness surveys, with the corrosion module.
  • Inspection of castings, forgings and plate.
  • Field inspection where the instrument is carried for long periods.

Selection checklist for the EPOCH 6LT

  • Standard version, or the version compliant with ISO 22232-1.
  • Software options needed, such as the corrosion module or the back wall echo attenuation gate.
  • Weight of 890 g with the battery, and size of 209 x 128 x 36 mm.
  • VGA colour screen of 5.76 in. that can be rotated for portrait use.
  • Battery life of about 6 hours on one lithium-ion battery.
  • Range of 4.31 to 6,700 mm and velocity of 635 to 15,240 m/s.
  • Dynamic DAC/TCG, DGS/AVG and AWS D1.1/D1.5 weld rating for your codes.
  • Storage of 100,000 IDs and export by USB or the optional Wi-Fi dongle.
  • LEMO 00 transducer connectors and the probes you plan to use.
  • Rope access kit, desktop stand and transport case.

Installation, commissioning and maintenance notes

Before inspection, calibrate the instrument on a reference block of the same material, with the probe and cable to be used on the job. Set the velocity, the zero and the range, then confirm the setup on the block. Record the settings in the inspection report. For work at height, attach the instrument with the accessory kit so it cannot fall. Charge the battery before each shift, clean the transducer connectors and keep the screen free from couplant. The instrument is engineered to IP67 and IP65, but dry it after use in wet places.

About brand

Evident makes nondestructive testing, remote visual inspection and material analysis instruments, building on more than a century of Olympus heritage. Its inspection business joined Wabtec Corporation in 2025, and the Evident name is planned to transition to Wabtec Inspection Technologies in 2027. Seven Star LLC supplies Evident ultrasonic thickness gauges, flaw detectors, eddy current instruments and XRF analyzers to inspection teams in Oman and the GCC on inquiry.

Evident ultrasonic and eddy current instruments

The range includes handheld ultrasonic thickness gauges such as the 39DL PLUS and 45MG, EPOCH conventional flaw detectors, NORTEC eddy current flaw detectors and OmniScan phased array systems, together with a broad line of transducers, probes and accessories. Gauges for corrosion mapping and wall thickness checks sit alongside weld inspection instruments, so one manufacturer can cover several inspection methods on a refinery shutdown or a pipeline project.

Material analysis and visual inspection

Evident also lists Vanta handheld XRF analyzers for alloy identification and positive material identification, and IPLEX video borescopes for remote visual inspection of pipes, vessels and machinery. Specifying the correct model depends on the material, the thickness range, the code or procedure and the site conditions, and we check the order code against the manufacturer's documentation before quoting.
