Magnaflux SKD-S2 Spotcheck Solvent Based Developer

Bright white non-aqueous developer for strong penetrant indications

Magnaflux SKD-S2 is a bright white, non-aqueous developer that forms an opaque white background for high-contrast penetrant testing and draws penetrant out of defects to create stronger, clearer indications. The manufacturer notes compatibility with special alloys such as stainless steel, aluminium, magnesium and titanium, states that it is non-halogenated, and says it can be used with Type 1 and Type 2 penetrants.

According to the data sheet SKD-S2 meets aerospace and nuclear industry requirements and complies with major NDT specifications, including ISO 3452. It goes on easily, dries quickly, promotes faster indication formation and minimises post-inspection cleaning. It is listed on QPL SAE AMS 2644 and approved by Aerospace Primes including Boeing, GE and Honeywell.

Because SKD-S2 is applicable to both Type 1 (fluorescent) and Type 2 (visible) penetrants, it is a good single developer for a workshop that runs both. If you only use the Zyglo aerosol line, ZP-9F is the corresponding aerosol developer on its own page.

Application instructions from the data sheet

Apply by spray only. Dipping or brushing causes excessive solvent action on the penetrant in discontinuities. SKD-S2 may be applied by aerosol or conventional spray gun and must be agitated during use so that the particles remain suspended.

Spray thin, even layers that just wet the surface. A heavy spray causes bleeding and running of indications; too light a spray slows development and may lose sensitivity because of limited solvent action. These are the same rules as for other non-aqueous developers, and the sheet repeats them as the main use instruction.

Where SKD-S2 is used

Weld testing, machine shops and field work are the named uses. In turnaround work on pipework and vessels the developer follows the cleaner and the penetrant, and the white film gives a clear background for red dye or fluorescent indications. For stainless steel, aluminium and titanium parts where halogens are restricted, the non-halogenated formulation is the attraction.

Storage, handling and approvals at a glance

The data sheet gives a storage range of 10 to 30 C (50 to 86 F) and a usage range of 5 to 52 C (40 to 125 F). In Gulf summer conditions a vehicle or open yard can exceed both, so keep cans in shaded, ventilated storage and bring them to working temperature before use; this storage advice is general practice and should be checked against the Safety Data Sheet on the Magnaflux site.

The sheet names compliance with AMS 2644, ASME BPVC, ASTM E1417, ASTM E165, ISO 3452-2, MIL-STD-2132, MIL-STD-271 and NAVSEA specifications, and Boeing, GE and Honeywell process references. Check the revision of the specification your client cites, because this sheet is dated October 2023.

Purchasing checklist for SKD-S2

Before ordering, confirm which penetrant system the developer will serve. The data sheet states that SKD-S2 works with Type 1 fluorescent and Type 2 visible penetrants, so one developer can support a mixed workshop, but the written procedure still decides which product combination is approved. Choose the pack by workload: the aerosol case of twelve for field kits, the 1 gal jug case of four for a small spray gun, and the 5 gal pail or 55 gal drum for production. The revision printed on the sheet is October 2023, and it is good practice to record that revision with the purchase.

Storage and handling

Keep cans and containers in the 10 to 30 C storage range given by the manufacturer, in a shaded and ventilated store, away from heat and open flame. Agitate containers before and during use so that the white particles stay in suspension, and close them after each shift. The Safety Data Sheet is the reference for flammability, protective equipment and disposal of empty containers.

Information needed for a quotation

Send the part number from the ordering table, the number of cases, jugs, pails or drums, the delivery location in Oman or the GCC and any specification the shipment must reference. If the Spotcheck cleaner and penetrant are needed too, list them in the same request so that the full system can be quoted together.
