Sonatest XEO Phased Array Tablet Flaw Detector

Description

A tablet-format phased array instrument with 64 pulsers and TFM

The XEO is Sonatest’s newest phased array and TFM flaw detector, built as a field-ready tablet with an 11.56 inch 1080p touch screen. Sonatest says it is designed to adapt to modern industry technologies and automation, and promises that a user can switch on and be ready to calibrate and inspect in two minutes.

The XEO covers three technique groups: phased array with up to 64 pulsers and 128 receivers, UT-TOFD with up to 8 UT channels depending on the dock, and FMC-TFM with probes up to 128 elements. It can show PA, TFM and TOFD in one configuration, which the product page describes as a more complete inspection in a single scan.

Imaging features

Sectorial and linear scanning render the true part geometry, and 3D ray tracing validates the set-up and coverage. TFM and TFMi can use one or many of the 16 propagation modes on flat and curved parts, at up to 4 megapixels per image. The specification also lists ray tracing compatible with all geometries, a calibration dashboard with warnings, and an embedded manual and quick-start guide.

The software table lists an SDK and remote API option, RDP access from Linux, Windows 11 and macOS clients, secure boot with digital component signatures and user-data encryption on the SSD. Updates are delivered over the web.

Choosing a configuration

Select the mini-dock first because it fixes the probe connector layout. Then add the TFM, matrix and SDK options needed for the procedure. The page lists coaxial adapters (ADAP-033 to ADAP-041) and encoder adapters for moving from Veo to XEO (ADAP-023 to ADAP-028).

Where the XEO fits in Oman and the GCC

A tablet-format phased array instrument suits inspection companies and plant owners who carry out weld inspection on pipelines, pressure vessels and storage tanks, as well as corrosion mapping on piping and tank floors during planned shutdowns. The short start-up time is useful when inspectors move between many locations in one shift, and combining PA, TFM and TOFD in one configuration can reduce the number of passes needed on a weld.

Heat and dust are the main site concerns in the region. Keep the tablet out of direct sun when it is not in use, protect connectors from sand, and plan battery charging so the unit is not run down during long scans. For encoded scans, the scanner, probes and wedges should be chosen together with the instrument, because they decide the coverage and the speed of the inspection more than the electronics do.
