Sonatest Veo3 Phased Array and TFM Flaw Detector

Description

A multi-technique phased array unit that keeps the familiar workflow

The Veo3 is Sonatest’s ruggedised phased array flaw detector with live TOFD and total focusing method (TFM) imaging. Sonatest says it lets inspectors keep inspecting as they always have, while gaining the extra resolution and sizing performance of TFM during an already approved procedure. It follows the Veo+ launched in 2016 (per the Sonatest brochure) and adds a PCAP touch panel, a 64-bit Linux system with a 128 GB SSD, so file size is not a constraint.

The three techniques share one acquisition. According to the product page, the unit can generate up to six live TFM scans from multiple FMC sources on different probes, with images up to 500,000 pixels and 100 pixels per mm.

TFM, TFMi and sizing tools

Full matrix capture data can be recorded in full and re-processed, which allows comparison with earlier inspections to track flaw or corrosion growth. The TFMi mode combines up to four live TFM modes for a more accurate height and shape of a defect, and the product page says it has shown superior results on weld analysis. The specification adds an extraction box, four gates per A-scan, TCG, DAC with split DAC and DGS with split DGS for UT-TOFD, and an advanced focal law calculator that is compatible with CIVA and BeamTool.

Wizards for sound velocity, wedge delay, TCG, DAC, TOFD set-up and encoder calibration are standard. The inspection plan shows probe positions in 3D on the part and supports reporting with automatic PDF reports, CSV export and screen capture.

Software that goes with it

One UTstudio+ licence is included. UTmap stitches C-scans into tiled scans, UTview is a free data viewer, and Xpair provides VNC and VPN remote control, file transfer and FTP so that a specialist can guide an inspector on a remote site.

Planning a purchase

Decide first on the channel count, then on connectors (BNC or LEMO for the conventional ports) and finally on the software options for live TFM or curved-surface phased array. Encoder adapters from earlier Prisma, MX and SX instruments are listed on the product page.

Where the Veo3 is used in the region

In Oman and the GCC, phased array and TFM inspection is common on new pipeline and plant welds, on in-service vessels and piping where crack-like defects must be characterised, and on corrosion mapping work during turnarounds. The ability to run PA, TOFD and TFM in one acquisition reduces the number of scans on site, which matters when access windows are short.

Information to send with an enquiry

  • Required channel configuration and which TFM options are needed
  • Probe types, wedges and scanners for the planned welds or corrosion areas
  • Software licences for analysis on a computer
  • Training needs and the code or procedure to be followed
