Danfoss 042H2025 AKV 20-3 Electric Expansion Valve, 42 mm ODF

Description

AKV 20-3: a pulse-width electric expansion valve for large supermarket and industrial lines

Danfoss 042H2025 is an AKV 20-3 electrically operated expansion valve. It is a normally closed valve that opens and closes in pulses, with the controller varying the on-time to modulate refrigerant flow. The body has 42 mm ODF inlet and outlet connections, an orifice of 8 mm, a Kv value of 2.5 m3/h and a rated capacity of 250 kW on R22, as printed on the store page.

It is supplied without a coil (Coil: No), so the solenoid coil is ordered separately. The medium temperature range is -40 to 60 C, ambient -40 to 50 C, the maximum working pressure 28 bar and the maximum operating pressure differential with a 10 W AC coil is 18 bar. Minimum opening differential is 0 bar.

Pulse-width control with AKV valves

Danfoss presents AKV valves in leaflets for OEM, installer and end-user use, which shows how broad the use is across supermarkets, cold stores and process cooling. In a pulse-width circuit the superheat controller commands a cycle (typically a few seconds) and the AKV closes fully between pulses, so there is no separate solenoid valve needed.

The AKV 20 series is larger than the AKV 10 and AKV 15. Because the valve is sized by Kv and orifice, the data sheet also lists capacities for several refrigerants and evaporating temperatures; the 250 kW printed here is the R22 rating figure only.

Coil, controller and installation

Select a matching coil from the AKV accessories list and a controller that supports pulse-width modulation of an AKV valve, such as a Danfoss superheat controller. Mount the valve with the coil upward when possible, and keep a filter-drier upstream to protect the orifice.

Confirm refrigerant, coil voltage, connection (solder 42 mm or weld, depending on the code) and capacity against the AKV 15 / AKV 20 data sheet before ordering. The installation guide for AKV 20 covers coil mounting and brazing precautions. Spare parts are available for the valve.

Other types and sizes from the same Danfoss family that appear in the Danfoss store listing include AKV 20-1 (042H2020), AKV 20-2 (042H2022), AKV 20-4 (042H2027), AKV 20-5 (042H2029), AKV 10PS4 (068F4034), AKV 10PS5 (068F4035), AKV 10PS6 (068F4036), AKV 10PS7 (068F4037). These are listed for orientation only; each has its own datasheet values, so check size, connection and version before ordering.

About brand

Danfoss is the Danish engineering group that makes refrigeration and air-conditioning controls, heating components, variable speed drives and mobile hydraulics. Mads Clausen founded it on 1 September 1933 at his parents' farm in Nordborg on the island of Als, after making his first refrigeration expansion valve in 1932. Nordborg is still the group's headquarters, and Danfoss remains controlled by the Clausen family through the Bitten & Mads Clausen Foundation.

Danfoss company profile

Milestones

  • 1932–1933: First expansion valve; the company is founded in Nordborg.
  • 1939: 26 employees. By the 10th anniversary in 1943 the company has 179.
  • 1950s: Rapid growth turns Nordborg into a Danfoss town with housing and schools for its workforce.
  • 1968: Danfoss launches its VLT frequency converter, one of the first mass-produced AC drives.
  • 2014: Acquisition of the Finnish drives maker Vacon, now the VACON brand.
  • 2021: Acquisition of Eaton's hydraulics business.

Choosing Danfoss products

For solenoid valves, check the operating principle. A direct-operated valve such as EV210B opens even at 0 bar differential pressure. A servo-operated valve such as EV220B needs a minimum differential (typically about 0.3 bar) to open, while an assisted-lift valve such as EV250B works from 0 bar. Coils are ordered separately, so the voltage on the coil (for example 230 V AC or 24 V DC) must match the control circuit. For drives, the VLT family is split by application: FC 51 Micro Drive for small machines, FC 102 HVAC Drive for fans and pumps in buildings, FC 202 AQUA Drive for water, and FC 302 AutomationDrive for demanding industrial duty.

Where Danfoss products are used

In Oman and the GCC, Danfoss drives run pumps, fans and compressors in district cooling plants, water and wastewater stations, desalination and building HVAC. Danfoss pressure switches, transmitters and solenoid valves are built into chillers, refrigeration plants, boilers and hydraulic systems, and AB-QM valves balance chilled-water circuits in large buildings.

Ordering Danfoss products: what we need

Send the Danfoss code number from the label (for example 032U7115 or 131B0149) or the full drive type code (FC-302P3K0T5...). For drives, add the motor power, supply voltage and any fieldbus option. For valves, add the size, connection, medium and coil voltage. For pressure switches and transmitters, add the range, output and pressure connection.
