SICK MZT8-03VPS-KP0 MZT8 T-Slot Magnetic Cylinder Sensor, PNP

Description

MZT8 cylinder position sensor for T-slot and adapter-mounted cylinders

The SICK MZT8-03VPS-KP0 (part no. 1044458) is an MZT8 magnetic cylinder sensor for T-slot pneumatic cylinders. It detects the piston magnet through the cylinder wall and gives a PNP normally-open output. The 24 mm long PA12 housing carries a 0.3 m drag-chain-capable PUR cable with an M8 3-pin plug and is rated IP68.

Adapters allow fitting to profile cylinders, tie rod cylinders, round body cylinders, dovetail groove cylinders and SMC rail types CDQ2 and ECDQ2.

Cylinder end-position sensing

Cylinder sensors confirm that a pneumatic piston has reached its end position, which is a standard interlock in assembly, clamping and handling machines. The MZT8 senses the magnetic ring on the piston and gives a clean PNP signal. Typical response sensitivity is 2.6 mT with a hysteresis of 0.7 mT, and the overrun distance of 3 mm describes the length of piston travel while the output stays active.

Slide the sensor into the T-slot, move the piston to the wanted position and fix the sensor where the LED lights. The pre-wired 0.3 m cable with M8 plug connects to a standard sensor cable. Drag-chain approval of more than 2 million cycles applies to the connected cable, not to the free piston.

Ordering information

Order MZT8-03VPS-KP0, part no. 1044458. The related MZT8 types differ in output (PNP/NPN), housing length and connector; a T-slot version is not suited to cylinders without a T-slot unless the adapter listed in the data sheet is used. Confirm the cylinder profile before ordering.

Key features of the MZT8-03VPS-KP0

  • Drops into a standard T-slot and is held by its own clamping screw, with no separate bracket required on T-slot cylinders.
  • Short 24 mm housing, useful on compact cylinders where the stroke end leaves little slot length.
  • PNP normally-open output with up to 200 mA load current, suitable for direct connection to PLC inputs or small relays.
  • 1,000 Hz switching frequency, fast enough for short-stroke, high-cycle pneumatic axes.
  • Short-circuit, reverse polarity and power-up pulse protection, with a status LED for set-up.
  • 0.3 m PUR pigtail with an M8 3-pin plug, rated for more than 2,000,000 drag chain cycles.

Choosing the right variant

The MZT8 family is built in several combinations, and the order code tells them apart. The output can be PNP or NPN, the cable can terminate in a plug or in open leads, and the cable length varies. This version suits a European-style PNP control system wired with M8 extension cords, which lets the sensor be replaced without opening a junction box. If the machine uses NPN sinking inputs or requires a longer flying lead, a different code from the same family should be selected rather than adapting this one. For cylinders without a T-slot, the adapters listed on this page allow the same sensor to be used on tie rod, round body and profile cylinders, which keeps spares holding down to a single sensor type.

Setting up and maintaining the sensor

  • Move the piston to its end position, slide the sensor along the slot until the LED switches on, then move it a little further to sit inside the stable switching zone before tightening.
  • Allow for the typical 3 mm overrun distance and 0.7 mT hysteresis when the piston magnet is weak or the cylinder bore is small.
  • Respect the cable bending radius: over 3 × diameter when fixed and over 10 × diameter when flexing.
  • Keep sensors away from strong external magnetic fields such as welding cables or neighbouring cylinders with large magnets.
  • After a cylinder change, recheck the position; magnet strength varies between cylinder makes.

Applications in Oman and GCC plants

Magnetic cylinder sensors are found wherever pneumatics are used: packaging and filling lines in food and beverage plants, bottling of water, palletisers, valve actuators on process skids and assembly equipment. The IP68 rating and the -30 °C to +80 °C ambient range cover washdown areas and warm machine halls alike, while the PA12 housing and PUR cable stand up to oils and cleaning agents commonly found on packaging machinery. Because the sensor reads the magnet through the cylinder wall, there is no mechanical wear from actuation, which reduces the maintenance load compared with mechanical limit switches on dusty lines.

What to include in your RFQ

  • Type code MZT8-03VPS-KP0 or part number 1044458, and the quantity.
  • Cylinder make and type, so the correct adapter can be quoted if it is not a T-slot cylinder.
  • Any matching M8 extension cables, with length and connector style.
  • Whether a PNP or NPN output is actually required by the controller.

About brand

Machine builders have relied on SICK since 1946 for the sensors that tell a controller where a part, a pallet or a person is. The company, based in Waldkirch, Germany, makes photoelectric, inductive and magnetic sensors, distance sensors and safety devices. Seven Star LLC supplies SICK sensors to maintenance teams and integrators in Oman, mostly as exact replacements identified by type code and part number.

SICK sensor families on this page

Five of the SICK families listed here are described below. The W4 miniature photoelectric sensors include the WTB4-3, a proximity sensor with background suppression. IME is the standard inductive proximity line, and the IME18 is the M18 housing size. RZT7 cylinder sensors fit T-slot pneumatic cylinders and detect the piston magnet. The DT35 belongs to the Dx35 laser distance sensors for mid-range measurement. The microScan3 is a safety laser scanner that guards hazardous zones around machines and vehicles.

Where SICK sensors are used

SICK sensors are fitted on packaging and bottling lines, conveyors, palletizers, warehouse cranes and automated guided vehicles. Safety laser scanners protect robot cells and transfer cars. In process plants, the same proximity and cylinder sensors report valve and damper positions on packaged equipment.

Ordering SICK sensors: what we need

A SICK type code such as IME18-08NPSZW2K packs the whole specification into one string: housing size, sensing range, flush or non-flush mounting, output type and connection. Each variant also has a 7-digit part number, and that number is the safest identifier. Please send:

  • Type code and part number from the sensor label, or a photo of it
  • Output type (PNP or NPN, normally open or closed) and connection (cable length or M8/M12 plug)
  • For microScan3: variant (Core or Pro), interface, protective field range, plus system plug and bracket

We check the code in SICK's documentation and tell you if the manufacturer lists a successor.
