SICK RZT7-03ZWS-KW0 RZT7 T-Slot Cylinder Sensor, Reed, AC/DC

Description

RZT7-03ZWS-KW0 is a SICK RZT7 cylinder sensor (part no. 1070871) for t-slot pneumatic cylinders. It detects the magnet on the piston from outside the profile and gives a Reed nO signal, so end positions can be reported without a stroke-end switch inside the cylinder. Wiring is AC/DC 2-wire, supply 5 V AC/DC … 230 V AC/DC and the enclosure rating is IP65 ; IP67.

What the RZT7-03ZWS-KW0 needs from the cylinder

Cylinder sensors are mounted in the slot of the cylinder barrel and respond to the magnetic field of the piston. The data sheet lists a response sensitivity of 3 mT and a typical overrun distance of 10 mm, which tells you how far the piston travels into the sensor zone before it switches and how much the position can vary. Because the response depends on the magnet strength of the cylinder, check the sensitivity against the cylinder manufacturer’s magnet data. Cylinder sensors are fixed in the slot of the cylinder barrel and respond to the magnetic field of the magnet ring on the piston, so no mechanical switch is needed in the cylinder. The response sensitivity tells you how strong the field must be to switch; compare it with the cylinder maker’s magnet data, because weak magnets or thick barrels reduce the switching distance.

Switching frequency 400 Hz, continuous current up to ≤ 100 mA. Housing length is 32.5 mm. The connection is cable, 2-wire, stripped, 2 m. With adapters the data sheet lists these cylinder types: profile cylinder; Tie rod cylinder; Round body cylinder; Dovetail groove cylinder; SMC rail CDQ2; SMC rail ECDQ2. B10D is 790,000 Switching cycles, which you need for machinery safety calculations when the sensor is part of a safety function.

Type code RZT7-03ZWS-KW0 and part number 1070871

In SICK cylinder-sensor codes the family (RZT7) is followed by a mounting and housing code and letters for output and connection; they are a convenient description, but part number 1070871 identifies this sensor. Slot type and electrical output differ between the RZT7 and MZC1 families, so confirm the slot of your cylinder profile first.

Other active types in the same SICK family, each with its own part number:

  • RZT7-03ZWS-KWB (part no. 1070872)
  • RZT7-03ZUS-KWB (part no. 1070867)
  • RZT7-03ZRS-KWD (part no. 1070854) – Electrical wiring: AC/DC 3-wire, Connection type: Cable, 3-wire, stripped
  • RZT7-03ZRS-KWB (part no. 1070853) – Electrical wiring: AC/DC 3-wire, Connection type: Cable, 3-wire, stripped
  • RZT7-03ZUS-KW0 (part no. 1070865)

Mounting and wiring notes

Plan for 5 V AC/DC … 230 V AC/DC at the terminals, IP65 ; IP67 enclosure protection and an operating ambient of –30 °C … +70 °C. Confirm whether your controller needs a PNP device or a two-wire AC/DC device, because the electrical wiring differs between families. Mount the sensor in the slot, move the piston to the end position, slide the sensor until the LED switches and then fix it.

Commissioning the reed sensor on the cylinder

Set the switching point with the cylinder under normal working pressure and at its real operating speed, because a piston that is moved slowly by hand may switch at a slightly different position from one that arrives at speed. After fixing the sensor, cycle the cylinder several times and watch the input in the controller as well as the sensor LED, so that you know the signal is reaching the program and not only switching at the sensor. Check that the voltage drop of the reed output is acceptable for the input card, especially with low control voltages, and keep the load current within the listed continuous current and switching capacity. Inductive loads such as relay coils are better switched through a suitable controller input than directly by a reed contact.

Cable routing and protection

Route the cable along the cylinder and machine frame with the bending radius respected, clip it so that it does not swing with the moving parts, and keep it away from hot surfaces and sharp edges. Separate sensor cables from motor and welding cables where possible to limit electrical interference.

Maintenance and fault finding

When a position signal is missing, first confirm that the cylinder actually reaches the end position, then check whether the sensor has moved in the slot, and finally check the cable and the input. Nearby magnetic fields, steel parts close to the slot or other cylinders mounted very close can influence a magnetic sensor, so review the layout if a sensor switches unexpectedly. Include sensor position and cable condition in routine machine inspections.

Use in Oman and GCC machinery

Packaging lines, process skids and handling equipment in Oman and the wider Gulf often face high cabinet and machine temperatures, fine dust and washdown or humid air near the coast. The listed ambient range of –30 °C to +70 °C and the IP65 / IP67 rating suit many of these machines, but cylinders placed near ovens, sealers or in direct sun should be checked against the upper limit. Wipe dust from the slot area during cleaning so that debris does not push the sensor out of position.

About brand

Machine builders have relied on SICK since 1946 for the sensors that tell a controller where a part, a pallet or a person is. The company, based in Waldkirch, Germany, makes photoelectric, inductive and magnetic sensors, distance sensors and safety devices. Seven Star LLC supplies SICK sensors to maintenance teams and integrators in Oman, mostly as exact replacements identified by type code and part number.

SICK sensor families on this page

Five of the SICK families listed here are described below. The W4 miniature photoelectric sensors include the WTB4-3, a proximity sensor with background suppression. IME is the standard inductive proximity line, and the IME18 is the M18 housing size. RZT7 cylinder sensors fit T-slot pneumatic cylinders and detect the piston magnet. The DT35 belongs to the Dx35 laser distance sensors for mid-range measurement. The microScan3 is a safety laser scanner that guards hazardous zones around machines and vehicles.

Where SICK sensors are used

SICK sensors are fitted on packaging and bottling lines, conveyors, palletizers, warehouse cranes and automated guided vehicles. Safety laser scanners protect robot cells and transfer cars. In process plants, the same proximity and cylinder sensors report valve and damper positions on packaged equipment.

Ordering SICK sensors: what we need

A SICK type code such as IME18-08NPSZW2K packs the whole specification into one string: housing size, sensing range, flush or non-flush mounting, output type and connection. Each variant also has a 7-digit part number, and that number is the safest identifier. Please send:

  • Type code and part number from the sensor label, or a photo of it
  • Output type (PNP or NPN, normally open or closed) and connection (cable length or M8/M12 plug)
  • For microScan3: variant (Core or Pro), interface, protective field range, plus system plug and bracket

We check the code in SICK's documentation and tell you if the manufacturer lists a successor.
