Normalab CNOMO Foaming Tendency Tester for Machining Fluids

Description

Foam testing for water-based machining fluids

The CNOMO is a Normalab apparatus for assessing the foaming tendency of aqueous machining fluids, meaning cutting and grinding fluids used in solution or emulsion in water. Foam in a machine tool coolant tank reduces pump efficiency, hides the fluid level and can overflow, so many machining shops and fluid suppliers test it.

The instrument follows the NF T 60-185 method. In the leaflet’s description of the principle, a pump circulates the liquid from a calibrated ferrule, at a specified height, into a graduated glass cylinder, so that foam eventually forms. The volume of foam created during the test characterizes the foaming tendency and stability. The web page says the standard applies principally to machining fluids in solution or emulsion in water and, by extension, to other aqueous fluids.

What is delivered

The CNOMO apparatus is delivered with two metres of silicone tubing, a small three-pronged clamp, a stand with rod, a universal boss, a jacketed cylinder, a 30 to 300 l/h flowmeter for water or soluble oil, a centrifugal pump with cable and connector and a frequency variator. It is supplied without a thermostat; a thermostat for testing at 23 °C is the only accessory listed.

The jacketed cylinder is the part connected to the thermostat circuit, which keeps the sample at the specified test temperature. The frequency variator sets the pump speed so that the flow can be adjusted with the flowmeter.

What to confirm before ordering

Order the thermostat if the test has to be run at 23 °C, and check that the pump supply is compatible with local mains. The leaflet lists AC 200 V at 50 Hz and 0.5 A while the web page lists 230 V at 50/60 Hz, so ask Normalab for the confirmed electrical data before ordering. Prepare the test fluid at the required concentration and use clean water, since hardness and contaminants change foaming behaviour. Related equipment is grouped under liquid analytical systems.

Because the method compares fluids under identical conditions, record the fluid concentration, water quality, temperature and pump setting with every result, so that different fluids can be compared fairly.

About brand

Normalab is a French manufacturer of laboratory instruments for petroleum product testing, established in 1963 and based in Valliquerville, Normandy. The company started out as glassblowers and still runs a glassblowing workshop. For more than 55 years it has designed and built test instruments that follow ASTM, ISO and IP methods, including its NPM 450, the fifth generation of its automated flash point testers.

Seven Star LLC, an independent supplier in Oman, lists Normalab spare parts: the 60606 circulation pump for the coolant circuit of the NDI 450 automatic distillation analyzer, and the 60448 thermal detection thermocouple. We source Normalab parts by their five-digit reference number.

Normalab instrument families

The manufacturer arranges its instruments by the property tested: flammability, volatility, viscosity, cold flow properties, cleanliness and purity, lubricants, and bitumen, wax and grease. Its glassware line supports the same tests. The methods referenced are ASTM, ISO and IP. Refinery and fuel quality laboratories in the GCC run these instruments daily, which is why the usual request is for a replacement part rather than a complete instrument.

Ordering Normalab parts: what we need

Send the Normalab reference number of the part, the instrument model and its serial number, and a photo of the instrument nameplate. Where the part is a sensor or pump, a photo of the old item with its connector helps the manufacturer confirm the version fitted to your serial number. If you need a complete instrument, name the test method and the products you test.
