Normalab NSB Tech Automatic Salt in Crude Oil Analyzer

Description

Fast conductivity-based salt measurement for crude oil and bitumen

The NSB Tech is a Normalab fully automatic salt analyzer for crude oil. The sample is placed in a beaker, the electrode cover is lowered, and the instrument applies an automatically adjusted voltage, measures the current through the sample and converts it to a salt concentration in less than 30 seconds. Salt in crude oil causes corrosion and fouling in refinery units, so the measurement is routine at desalters, tank farms and custody transfer points.

Normalab lists ASTM D3230 and IP 265 and related methods. The method measures conductivity caused by common chlorides such as sodium, calcium and magnesium, and gives the approximate chloride concentration over a range of 0 to 500 mg/kg or 0 to 150 lb/1000 bbl as chloride per volume of crude oil. Other conductive materials may also be present, so the result is an approximation. The leaflet adds that the device can also be used for salt content in bitumen.

Safety, software and delivery

The analyzer is plug and play with automatic range adjustment and automatic selection of the ASTM tables according to the sample temperature. The sensor is interchangeable. Safety features include protection against unintended touching of electrodes, over-current protection, a Hall effect sensor that cuts power when the lid is opened, an audible alarm during measurement and a light indicator.

It is delivered ready to use with one cover with electrode (P/N 942801) and three beakers with rings (P/N 942802). Accessories and options are ordered separately: calibration for the IP standard, a specific temperature calibration, calibration for salts in bitumen at 20 °C, a thermal ticket printer with paper rolls, a carrying case and a calibration kit.

Where it is used and what to confirm

Normalab names refineries, pipelines, terminals, laboratories, inspection companies, oil platforms and customs as applications. A portable 7 kg unit with a carrying case option suits field and terminal sampling, while the stored tables and USB export serve the laboratory. Because sample preparation, such as the solvent mixture and the water content, determines accuracy, follow the standard’s procedure.

Before ordering, confirm the standard (ASTM D3230 or IP 265), the temperature calibration needed, the bitumen option if relevant, a printer and case, the mains voltage and the calibration kit. Related equipment is grouped under liquid analytical systems.

About brand

Normalab is a French manufacturer of laboratory instruments for petroleum product testing, established in 1963 and based in Valliquerville, Normandy. The company started out as glassblowers and still runs a glassblowing workshop. For more than 55 years it has designed and built test instruments that follow ASTM, ISO and IP methods, including its NPM 450, the fifth generation of its automated flash point testers.

Seven Star LLC, an independent supplier in Oman, lists Normalab spare parts: the 60606 circulation pump for the coolant circuit of the NDI 450 automatic distillation analyzer, and the 60448 thermal detection thermocouple. We source Normalab parts by their five-digit reference number.

Normalab instrument families

The manufacturer arranges its instruments by the property tested: flammability, volatility, viscosity, cold flow properties, cleanliness and purity, lubricants, and bitumen, wax and grease. Its glassware line supports the same tests. The methods referenced are ASTM, ISO and IP. Refinery and fuel quality laboratories in the GCC run these instruments daily, which is why the usual request is for a replacement part rather than a complete instrument.

Ordering Normalab parts: what we need

Send the Normalab reference number of the part, the instrument model and its serial number, and a photo of the instrument nameplate. Where the part is a sensor or pump, a photo of the old item with its connector helps the manufacturer confirm the version fitted to your serial number. If you need a complete instrument, name the test method and the products you test.
