Universal Robots UR16e 16 kg Collaborative Robot Arm

Description

A 16 kg cobot for heavier tooling and multi-part handling

The Universal Robots UR16e is the e-Series arm for heavier loads: a 16 kg payload at 900 mm reach, on the same 190 mm base as the UR12e. Universal Robots positions it for heavy-duty work such as machine tending, material handling and packaging in smaller workspaces, where a compact reach and a high payload are needed together.

Its tool-flange sensor measures up to 160 N and 10 Nm, the arm weighs 33.1 kg, and it moves at up to 3 m/s with 0.05 mm repeatability. The lifting capacity allows heavier end-of-arm tooling or the handling of several parts per cycle.

Standard supply, OEM option and interfaces

According to the Universal Robots product page, a standard UR16e order includes the arm, a control box, a teach pendant, a power cable, the cable between arm and control box and documentation, and a three-position enabling pendant can be added as an option through the UR+ programme. Application kits and other options are ordered separately.

The UR16e is also offered as an OEM system for integrators and machine builders: the arm, a controller box with a built-in data-processing computer board and a connection cable, in AC and DC versions to suit the power source. State the supply type when requesting a quotation.

At the tool, the M8 connector gives 12 or 24 V, up to 2 A, two digital I/O points and two analog inputs or RS-485. The data sheet lists 23 configurable safety functions with EN ISO 13849-1 (PLd Category 3) and EN ISO 10218-1, and an operating range of 0 to 50 degrees C. The control box provides 16 + 16 digital and 2 + 2 analog channels and the usual industrial Ethernet protocols.

Both the UR16e and the UR12e have a 190 mm base, so the choice between them comes down to whether 16 kg at 900 mm or 12.5 kg at 1300 mm fits the job. Check the heaviest part with its gripper against the payload limit.

Universal Robots cobot models compared

The UR16e has the highest payload of the e-Series arms; the UR20 and UR30 of the newer UR Series go further. Compare payload and reach below.

Model Payload Reach
UR3e 3 kg 500 mm
UR7e 7.5 kg 850 mm
UR12e 12.5 kg 1300 mm
UR16e 16 kg 900 mm
UR20 20 kg 1750 mm
UR30 30 kg 1300 mm

About brand

Universal Robots is a Danish manufacturer of collaborative robots (cobots), founded in 2005 and headquartered in Odense, and part of Teradyne Robotics. Seven Star LLC, an independent supplier in Muscat, quotes Universal Robots cobot arms for machine tending, palletizing, screwdriving, welding and assembly cells.

Collaborative robot arms from 3 kg to 30 kg payload

The Universal Robots range covers six-joint arms from the 3 kg UR3e to the 30 kg UR30, programmed on a touchscreen teach pendant with the PolyScope software. Each catalogue page links the manufacturer data sheet, so payload, reach, weight and protection rating can be compared before a quotation is issued.

Typical cobot applications

Machine tending, material handling, palletizing, screwdriving, welding and assembly are application areas named for these arms. Final suitability depends on the tooling, the workpiece and the risk assessment of the complete cell.

Ordering Universal Robots products

Send the arm model, controller generation if known, tooling, quantity and delivery location with the inquiry, so the matching version can be checked against its data sheet before a quotation is issued.
