Universal Robots UR30 30 kg Heavy-Payload Cobot Arm

Description

A 30 kg cobot for high-torque and heavy-handling tasks

The Universal Robots UR30 is the highest-payload cobot in the family: 30 kg, or 35 kg under the boundary conditions in the manual, within a compact 1300 mm reach. Universal Robots built it for torque-intensive work such as screwdriving, machine tending with multiple grippers and other high-force tasks that push past the limits of a standard cobot.

Like the UR20 it belongs to the UR Series with redesigned joints, IP65 protection, a status light ring at the base and a heavy-duty tool flange. The arm weighs 63.5 kg without cable, runs at up to 4 m/s and draws a maximum of 750 W.

Applications and selection

Universal Robots lists high-torque screwdriving, machine tending, palletizing and material handling as UR30 applications, with CNC machine tending and heavy workpiece handling in metal fabrication and machining. For those jobs the tool, the part and any dress pack must stay within the payload curve at the working position, not just within the 30 kg figure.

The tool-flange force/torque sensor measures up to 200 N and 20 Nm, which is useful for screwdriving and insertion feedback. Interfaces follow the other UR Series arm: M8 8-pin connector with 12 or 24 V, 2 A, two digital I/O and two analog inputs or RS-485. Ambient range is 0 to 50 degrees C, with any mounting orientation.

The data sheet lists 23 configurable safety functions with EN ISO 13849-1 (PLd Category 3), EN ISO 10218-1 and UL 1740. The 1.8 kg three-position enabling pendant and the IP44 control box (16 + 16 digital, 2 + 2 analog and four quadrature channels, Modbus TCP, EtherNet/IP, PROFINET) complete the system.

Heavy tools and high-torque screwdriving load the base through reaction forces, so the pedestal or machine frame must be stiff and anchored for the full 63.5 kg arm plus the dynamic load of the tool.

Universal Robots cobot models compared

The UR30 is the heaviest-payload arm in the table; the UR20 offers longer reach. The repeatability figure is omitted here because the data sheet and the product page do not agree on it.

Model Payload Reach
UR3e 3 kg 500 mm
UR7e 7.5 kg 850 mm
UR12e 12.5 kg 1300 mm
UR16e 16 kg 900 mm
UR20 20 kg 1750 mm
UR30 30 kg 1300 mm

How the Universal Robots UR30 works

The UR30 is a six-joint arm. Each joint has its own motor, gearbox and encoder, and the controller moves the joints together so that the tool flange follows a path in space. The arm is a collaborative robot, which means it can work near people when the safety functions are set up and a risk assessment has been done. It stops or slows when it senses force beyond a limit. The force/torque sensor at the flange adds a measurement of what the tool is pushing against, which is useful for screwdriving and insertion.

Where the UR30 is used

  • High-torque screwdriving
  • Machine tending, including CNC machines with heavy workpieces
  • Palletizing and material handling
  • Metal fabrication and machining cells
  • Cells with multiple grippers on one tool

Selection checklist for the UR30

  • Weight of the tool and the part together, against the 30 kg rating
  • Reach to the farthest point, with a working radius of 1300 mm
  • Mounting orientation and the space for the 245 mm base
  • Tool flange standard, EN ISO 9409-1-80-6-M8
  • Tool I/O: two digital outputs and two analog inputs or RS-485
  • Cycle time, with top tool speed of 4 m/s
  • Cleanroom class 4 duty and IP65 environment
  • Safety functions and the risk assessment of the cell

Installation, commissioning and maintenance notes

The arm weighs 63.5 kg without the cable, so lift it with proper equipment and bolt it to a rigid base. Set the payload and the center of gravity in the controller, since wrong values reduce the accuracy of the safety functions. Connect the 6 m arm cable and the tool. Configure the safety limits and test every function before the cell is released for production. Check the cable and the flange connector for wear at regular intervals.

About brand

Universal Robots is a Danish maker of collaborative robot arms, founded in 2005 in Odense by three researchers from the University of Southern Denmark who wanted to make robots light and affordable enough for smaller manufacturers. Its first cobot, the UR5, was launched in 2008. Teradyne acquired Universal Robots in 2015 for $285 million.

Seven Star LLC is an independent supplier in Muscat. We list Universal Robots arms for manufacturers and integrators in Oman and the GCC.

  • 2005: Universal Robots is founded in Odense.
  • 2008: The UR5 cobot is launched.
  • 2015: Teradyne acquires Universal Robots.

Universal Robots product series

e-Series arms include the UR3e for 3 kg, the UR7e for 7.5 kg, the UR12e for 12.5 kg and the UR16e for 16 kg payloads.

Larger arms include the UR20 long-reach cobot for 20 kg and the UR30 heavy-payload cobot for 30 kg.

Payload must include the gripper or tool, and reach sets the working area: the UR3e suits bench tasks, while the UR20 and UR30 handle palletising and heavier parts. The arms can be programmed with the teach pendant or by moving the arm by hand, and many grippers and tools are available as UR+ accessories.

A risk assessment of the complete application is needed before people work beside the robot, as the safety depends on the tool, the part and the speed.

Where Universal Robots arms are used

Machine tending, pick and place, palletising, screwdriving, welding, polishing, quality inspection and laboratory automation.
