Universal Robots UR20 20 kg Long-Reach Cobot Arm

Description

A 1750 mm long-reach UR Series cobot with IP65 protection

The Universal Robots UR20 is a long-reach collaborative robot with a 20 kg payload, 25 kg under the boundary conditions in the manual, and a 1750 mm reach. It belongs to the newer UR Series, whose joints Universal Robots redesigned with about half the parts of the e-Series, and it reaches 5 m/s TCP speed. The arm is IP65 rated and carries a cleanroom class 4 rating at up to 80% velocity and payload.

Universal Robots lists welding, machine tending, material handling and palletizing as applications for the UR20, and describes a programmable LED light ring at the base for status indication. At 64 kg without cable and a 245 mm base, it is a floor or pedestal arm rather than a bench unit.

Environment, reach and tooling

IP65 makes the UR20 dust-tight and protected against water jets from any direction, which Universal Robots points to for environments with heavy dust or low-pressure water jets; check the full environment, chemicals and temperature against the manual. The larger 80 mm bolt-circle flange accepts heavier grippers and welding or handling tools.

Reach, payload and the centre of gravity of the tool all affect the usable envelope, so size the cobot from the payload curve in the manufacturer documentation rather than from the headline numbers. The arm mounts in any orientation and runs at 0 to 50 degrees C.

Compliance listed in the data sheet: EN ISO 13849-1 (PLd Category 3), EN ISO 10218-1 and UL 1740, with 23 configurable safety functions. The tool connector is M8, 8-pin female, with 12 or 24 V up to 2 A, two digital I/O and two analog inputs or RS-485. Control box and pendant (1.8 kg, three-position enabling) match the smaller arms: 16 + 16 digital, 2 + 2 analog, four quadrature inputs.

With about 64 kg of arm mass, installation needs lifting equipment and a floor or pedestal designed for the load. A long reach multiplies the moment at the base, so check the mounting calculation with the tool at full extension.

Universal Robots cobot models compared

The UR20 is the long-reach arm of the UR Series, with the UR30 as the highest-payload sibling. The repeatability figure is omitted here because the data sheet and the product page do not agree on it.

Model Payload Reach
UR3e 3 kg 500 mm
UR7e 7.5 kg 850 mm
UR12e 12.5 kg 1300 mm
UR16e 16 kg 900 mm
UR20 20 kg 1750 mm
UR30 30 kg 1300 mm

About brand

Universal Robots is a Danish manufacturer of collaborative robots (cobots), founded in 2005 and headquartered in Odense, and part of Teradyne Robotics. Seven Star LLC, an independent supplier in Muscat, quotes Universal Robots cobot arms for machine tending, palletizing, screwdriving, welding and assembly cells.

Collaborative robot arms from 3 kg to 30 kg payload

The Universal Robots range covers six-joint arms from the 3 kg UR3e to the 30 kg UR30, programmed on a touchscreen teach pendant with the PolyScope software. Each catalogue page links the manufacturer data sheet, so payload, reach, weight and protection rating can be compared before a quotation is issued.

Typical cobot applications

Machine tending, material handling, palletizing, screwdriving, welding and assembly are application areas named for these arms. Final suitability depends on the tooling, the workpiece and the risk assessment of the complete cell.

Ordering Universal Robots products

Send the arm model, controller generation if known, tooling, quantity and delivery location with the inquiry, so the matching version can be checked against its data sheet before a quotation is issued.
