Spirax Sarco FTGS14 Stainless Ball Float Steam Trap

Description

The Spirax Sarco FTGS14 is a stainless steel ball float steam trap with an automatic thermostatic air vent. A float lifts as condensate collects and opens the valve, which discharges condensate continuously as soon as it forms rather than waiting for it to build up. That makes ball float traps the usual choice for heat exchangers, calorifiers, dryers and other process equipment where waterlogging cuts heat transfer. The FTGS14 has a stainless steel body, an electroless nickel-plated SG iron cover and screwed ends from 1/2 to 1 in., and can be maintained without disturbing the pipe.

Continuous drainage with air venting

In a ball float trap the float rises and falls with the condensate level and moves the main valve through a lever, so discharge follows the load. The built-in thermostatic air vent releases air at start-up that would otherwise block heat transfer surfaces. The data sheet also lists extra cold-water capacity from the air vent during start-up, from 70 kg/h at 0.5 bar differential on the 1/2 and 3/4 in. sizes to 1500 kg/h at 14 bar, which helps clear the equipment quickly when it is cold.

There are three differential pressure ratings in the code: FTGS14-4.5, FTGS14-10 and FTGS14-14, each with its own seat size and maximum differential pressure. Pick the one that matches the pressure difference across the trap.

Options and limits

Available orientations are R-L, L-R and a vertical FTGS14V. An optional manually adjusted needle valve, the -C version, provides a steam lock release feature in addition to the standard air vent. An optional integral strainer screen, the X version, can also be fitted. The BP99/32 capsule is suitable for 150 C superheat at 0 bar g and 50 C superheat at 32 bar g. Maximum operating pressure for saturated steam is 14.6 bar g, so this is a PN16 trap, not a high-pressure one.

The trap is safe for full vacuum and certified with a manufacturer’s Typical Test Report on request.

Selecting and ordering

State the size, thread standard, flow direction, differential pressure class and any option letter. The weight is 3.4 kg for the 1/2 and 3/4 in. sizes and 4.6 kg for the 1 in. size, and the withdrawal distance for the cover is shown in the dimension table. Capacity curves in the data sheet give condensate flow against differential pressure for each class, so size from the load at the lowest differential you expect.

The pictured trap is the standard FTGS14 from the manufacturer’s product image.

About brand

Spirax Sarco is the British steam engineering company known for steam traps, pressure reducing valves, stop valves, separators and steam flowmeters. Its roots go back to 1888, when Herman Sanders founded a London business importing thermostatic steam traps under the Sarco name. The Spirax brand followed in 1932, the company moved to Cheltenham in 1937, and it was listed in 1959. The group now trades as Spirax Group and is still headquartered in Cheltenham.

Seven Star LLC is an independent supplier in Muscat. We list Spirax Sarco steam traps, valves, clean steam equipment and flowmeters, and supply them to boiler houses, hospitals, food plants and process plants in Oman and the GCC.

Good steam systems remove condensate and air as soon as they form, because water in a steam line causes water hammer and wet steam carries less usable heat. Thermodynamic traps like the TD42 suit steam mains and tracing. Ball float traps like the FTS14 discharge continuously and suit heat exchangers. Balanced pressure traps vent air quickly at start-up. A trapping station such as the STS17.2 puts the isolation valves, strainer and trap on one connector, so the trap can be changed in minutes.

Where Spirax Sarco products are used

In Oman and the GCC, Spirax Sarco equipment is used in boiler houses of refineries and petrochemical plants, power and desalination stations, hospitals, hotels and laundries, and food, beverage, dairy and pharmaceutical plants.

Ordering Spirax Sarco products: what we need

Send the model, size (DN), end connection, body material and pressure rating. For steam traps, add the operating pressure and condensate load. For pressure reducing valves, add the inlet and outlet pressure and the steam flow in kg/h.
