TLV JL9X Process Float Steam Trap 50 mm High Capacity

Description

A compact double-seated float trap for large process equipment

The TLV JL9X is a cast iron process float steam trap in a 50 mm size, built for large process or heating equipment with high condensate loads. TLV uses a float and lever with a double-seated valve, heat-treat hardened valve seat and head, and an X-element thermostatic capsule that vents air automatically until close-to-steam temperature. The JL9X is rated 1.6 MPaG at 220 °C, and its steel counterpart JLH9X goes to 3.2 MPaG and 240 °C. TLV lists a maximum discharge capacity of 18 t/h for this size.

Why choose it for heaters and dryers

The double-seated valve gives continuous, low-velocity discharge as load varies, and the self-aligning mechanism with stainless steel internals limits wear. All internal parts can be serviced without removing the trap from the line, and the trap unit and air vent unit are replaceable items in TLV’s kit lists. TLV places the JL and JLH types alongside its other large-capacity float traps for reboilers and large heat exchangers with continuous steam use. Related sizes include the JL14X (60 t/h, 1.0 or 1.6 MPaG) and the cast steel JLH15 (50 t/h, 5.0 MPaG, 425 °C).

Model Body PMO / TMO Max. capacity
JL9X Cast iron 1.6 MPaG / 220 °C 18 t/h
JL14X Cast iron 1.0 or 1.6 MPaG / 220 °C 60 t/h
JLH15 Cast steel 5.0 MPaG / 425 °C 50 t/h

Selection and documents

Pick the orifice number from the differential pressure available, remembering that PMO changes with orifice. A strainer ahead of the trap is good practice on any float trap. For float traps with a ball and rolling seat see the

, and for other options go to the steam trap category. The attached TLV specification sheet gives the parts table, dimensions for screwed and socket weld versions and the capacity charts. Send steam conditions and the end connection with your enquiry, and confirm the model code against current TLV documents before ordering.

How the TLV JL9X float steam trap works

A steam trap removes condensate and air from a steam system without letting live steam escape. In a float trap, the condensate that gathers in the body lifts a float. The float moves a lever, and the lever opens the valve, so the condensate leaves at the same rate that it forms. When the condensate level falls, the float drops and the valve closes. An X-element thermostatic capsule opens at start-up to vent air and closes again as the temperature approaches steam temperature. The JL9X uses a double-seated valve, which lets a large flow pass through a compact body.

Where the JL9X is used

  • Large process heat exchangers and reboilers.
  • Heating coils and large jacketed vessels.
  • Dryers and cylinders with continuous steam use.
  • Plants with a high condensate load on a single trap.
  • Steam systems that need steady, continuous discharge.

Selection checklist for the JL9X

  • Size of 50 mm and the connection type, screwed or screwed-in flange.
  • Model: JL9X in cast iron, or JLH9X in cast steel for higher pressure.
  • Orifice number, chosen from the working pressure difference.
  • Maximum operating pressure of 1.0 or 1.6 MPaG for the JL9X.
  • Maximum operating temperature of 220 degrees C for the JL9X.
  • Condensate load, with a maximum discharge capacity of 18 t/h for this size.
  • Body material to ASTM A126 Class B or ASTM A216 WCB.
  • Weight of 34 kg, for the pipe support.
  • Space for the trap, with a length of 414 mm and a height of 338 mm.

Installation, commissioning and maintenance notes

Install the trap below the equipment it drains, so that condensate flows to it by gravity, and make sure the arrow on the body follows the flow. Fit a strainer upstream to keep scale out of the valve. Add isolation valves and a test point so the trap can be checked in service. Support the pipework, because the trap is heavy. All internal parts can be serviced without taking the trap out of the line.

Requesting a quotation for the TLV JL9X

Send the steam pressure, the condensate load and the connection type. Seven Star LLC serves industrial customers in Oman and the GCC and replies with a quotation based on the information provided.

Why a float trap suits variable loads

A float trap discharges condensate continuously as it forms, so the heat exchanger does not fill with water. This keeps the heat transfer area clear and the product temperature steady.

Air venting at start-up

Air in a steam space acts like an insulator. The thermostatic capsule vents it at start-up, which shortens the warm-up time of the equipment.

Records of trap surveys

Tag each trap, and keep the model, the orifice and the survey dates on the steam system list.

About brand

TLV is a Japanese maker of steam traps and steam system equipment, founded in 1950 and based in Kakogawa.

Seven Star LLC is an independent supplier in Muscat. We list TLV steam traps for steam users in Oman and the GCC.

TLV product series

Free float traps include the JH5RL-P for high pressure, the JH7RH-B for steam up to 10 MPaG, the J10 float dynamic trap for high capacity and the JL9X process float trap in 50 mm.

The FP46UN QuickTrap is a thermodynamic disc trap with a connector for quick replacement.

Free float traps discharge condensate continuously with one moving part, which suits process equipment with changing loads. Thermodynamic disc traps are compact and suit steam main drips and tracers, and QuickTrap connectors allow trap replacement without cutting the pipe.

Traps are selected by pressure, differential pressure and condensate load.

Where TLV traps are used

Steam main drips, heat exchangers, reboilers, process vessels and high pressure steam in refineries, power and chemical plants.

Ordering TLV traps: what we need

Send the model, size and connection, steam pressure and differential, condensate load and application.

Frequently Asked Questions
