Samson Type 2040 Safety Temperature Monitor for Cryogenic Gas
Description
Samson Type 2040 safety temperature monitor for cryogenic gas lines
The Samson Type 2040 is a self-operated safety temperature monitor (STM) that closes automatically when the medium temperature falls below an adjusted limit. It is designed for cryogenic gases such as argon, nitrogen and oxygen that are stored as liquids and supplied to consumer plants that cannot tolerate extremely cold gas. The datasheet gives limit ranges from –45 to +10 °C, a temperature range from –60 to +60 °C, an operating pressure of up to 40 bar and an oil- and grease-free design. Seven Star LLC supplies the Type 2040 in Oman and the GCC as an independent supplier in Muscat, mainly for industrial gas and air-separation installations.
The device is an unpowered fail-safe element. If the sensor system becomes defective, the valve closes; this behaviour is called out in the datasheet as part of the increased safety of the design. The unit is type-tested, and the datasheet states that an EC type examination according to the Pressure Equipment Directive 2014/68/EU, Module B, has been carried out.
Type 2040 limit range options
The only ordering choices are the limit range and the end connection parts, which is why the type number itself is the sole identifier.
| Limit range | Seat material | Leakage class (IEC 60534-4) |
|---|---|---|
| –30 to +10 °C | Brass CW617N with NBR seal | 0.05 % of KVS or less |
| –45 to –10 °C | Brass CW617N with PTFE seal | 0.1 % of KVS or less |
The adjusted limit is the point at which the valve is fully closed. The valve starts to close approximately 17 K above that limit, so the throttling range lies between the limit and the limit plus 17 K. The valve reopens when the medium temperature has risen 2 K above the limit.

How the safety temperature monitor works
The device works on the liquid expansion principle. A temperature-sensitive filling in the integrated sensor expands as the temperature rises and contracts as it falls. The valve is normally open. When a too-cold medium reaches the sensor, the filling contracts, and the positioning spring pushes the tubular plug toward the soft-sealed seat, first throttling and then closing the flow. Because the closing function depends on the sensor temperature, whether it is set by the ambient air or by the process medium, the limit must be adjusted with the ambient temperature at least 25 K above the limit to be set.
Where the Type 2040 fits in a gas system
The STM is placed downstream of an air vaporiser or a pressure regulator, immediately ahead of consumer plant such as carbon steel piping or process equipment that is not designed for cryogenic temperatures. It should not be placed directly next to an air vaporiser, because the cold outdoor air could make it close prematurely. The cryogenic pressure regulators already on this site, such as the Samson Type 2357-1, are the typical neighbours, and the Series 43 temperature regulators cover warmer duty.
Selection checklist for a Type 2040
- Limit temperature required and the limit range that contains it with margin.
- Process medium and whether oxygen cleaning (oil and grease free) is required.
- Maximum operating pressure (40 bar) and differential pressure (25 bar).
- Line size and connection parts: soldering nipple or welding end, DN 15 or DN 25, with conical seal or flat seal.
- Flow demand compared with KVS 5.
- Type-test and PED documentation requested by the project.
Installation, commissioning and maintenance of the 2040
The valve can be mounted in any position, but the flow arrow on the body must match the flow direction. Adjust the limit on site with the limit adjuster, noting the ring marking in 10 °C steps, and after adjustment fit the protective cover. The datasheet warns that an incorrect adjustment is possible if the ambient temperature is too low, so adjust on a warm day or in a warm workshop. Inspect the connections for leaks and, in service, check periodically that the device closes when it is exposed to cold.
Typical applications of the Type 2040 in Oman and the GCC
Liquefied industrial gases are used in oil and gas for inerting and purging, in steel and metal fabrication, in the food and beverage sector and in hospitals. Air-separation units and on-site liquid nitrogen or oxygen tanks need a safeguard to prevent cold liquid or gas from reaching warm-service piping, and a purely mechanical device with no power requirement is attractive in these installations. Heat and sunlight in the Gulf make the 25 K ambient margin for limit adjustment easy to meet.

About brand
SAMSON is a German manufacturer of control valves, actuators, positioners and self-operated regulators. Hermann Sandvoss founded the company in Düsseldorf on 1 April 1907, and its first important product was a thermostatic valve that controlled temperature without external power. After moves to Mannheim, SAMSON settled in Frankfurt am Main in 1916, where SAMSON AG is still headquartered.
Seven Star LLC supplies Samson control valves, pneumatic actuators and positioners to process plants in Oman, including the types listed on this page and their replacement units.

Samson valve, actuator and positioner types
Samson builds a control valve from modules. The Type 3241 globe valve is the general-service body of Series 240, and the Type 3251 is the Series 250 body for higher pressure ratings. Either one is combined with a Type 3271 pneumatic diaphragm actuator or a Type 3277, whose yoke allows the positioner to be attached directly with a concealed travel linkage.
Among the positioners listed are the Type 3725 and the Type 3730 family: the 3730-1 as the basic electropneumatic version, sold in its current generation as TROVIS 3730-1, and the 3730-3 with HART communication and valve diagnostics. Samson also makes PROFIBUS PA and FOUNDATION fieldbus variants in the same family, plus self-operated pressure and temperature regulators.
Where Samson valves are used
Samson control valves throttle steam, gas and liquids in chemical and petrochemical units, refineries, gas processing, power stations, water and desalination plants, and food production. Many reach site as part of a skid or package, so the plant instrument team often meets them first when a positioner or actuator needs replacing. We supply these items to end users and contractors throughout the GCC.

Ordering Samson parts: what we need
Every Samson device has a nameplate with the type, a configuration ID (Var-ID) and a serial number. A photo of that plate is the surest route to an exact match. Without it, please send:
- Valve: type, DN or NPS, pressure rating, body and trim material, Kvs or Cv, plug and seat style, packing and bonnet type
- Actuator: type, effective area in cm², bench range, fail action and travel
- Positioner: full type code including Ex protection, communication and options such as limit switches or position transmitter
We check the code against Samson documentation and provide the manufacturer's data sheet on request.
Facts checked against SAMSON's corporate chronicle and press material, October 2026.
