Samson 44-1B Pressure Reducing Valve / 44-6B Excess Valve
Description
Samson 44-1B pressure reducing valve and 44-6B excess pressure valve
The Samson 44-1B is a self-operated pressure reducing valve for air, nitrogen, other gases, liquids and, in the 44-6B counterpart, steam. It shares one data sheet with the Type 44-6B excess pressure valve, because the two regulators use the same bellows actuator and body family and differ in what they do with the pressure signal. The 44-1B closes when the downstream pressure rises above the set point; the 44-6B opens when the upstream pressure rises above it. Both cover set points from 0.2 to 20 bar, threads G ½, G ¾ and G 1 and flanges DN 15 to DN 50, all at PN 25. Seven Star LLC supplies the Samson 44-1B in Oman and the GCC as an independent supplier based in Muscat.
Neither version needs auxiliary energy. A stainless steel operating bellows senses pressure directly, the spring-loaded single-seat valve moves the plug, and the low overall height makes the regulators easy to fit into crowded skids. Any mounting position is allowed, which sets the 44-1B apart from the steam-only 44-0B.
Decoding 44-1B and 44-6B
- 44 – Series 44 self-operated regulators with integrated bellows actuator.
- 1 – reducing function: controls the pressure downstream (outlet side) of the valve.
- 6 – excess pressure function: controls the pressure upstream (inlet side), acting as a back-pressure or relief regulator.
- B – bellows-actuated version.
Size, material and KVS are chosen from the ordering text rather than a suffix code, so state them in plain words in your enquiry.

KVS coefficients and seal materials for the 44-1B
The standard 44-1B has a balanced plug with a soft seal. Standard KVS values are 3.2 for G ½ and DN 15, 4.0 for G ¾, 5.0 for G 1 and DN 25, 16.0 for DN 40 and 20.0 for DN 50. Special unbalanced versions with KVS 0.25, 1.0 and 2.5 are listed, plus a metal-seated DN 40 type with KVS 8.0. For the 44-6B, the standard values are identical, with unbalanced special versions at 0.4 (metal seal), 1.0 and 2.5.
Seal choice sets the usable medium and temperature range:
| Plug seal | Process medium | Max. temperature |
|---|---|---|
| EPDM | Water | up to 150 °C |
| EPDM | Oil-free air, nitrogen | up to 80 °C |
| FKM | Mineral oil | up to 150 °C |
| FKM | Air | up to 150 °C |
| FKM | Nitrogen (44-6B only) | up to 200 °C |
| PTFE | Steam (44-6B only) | up to 200 °C |
How the 44-1B and 44-6B work
Medium flows in the direction of the arrow cast on the body. In the 44-1B the controlled pressure is picked up inside the body through a borehole and acts on the operating bellows. At pressures below the set point the valve is open; as the downstream pressure rises above the set point, the bellows overcomes the spring and drives the plug toward the seat. The 44-6B is closed when depressurised and opens as soon as the upstream pressure exceeds the set point, which makes it a compact way to hold back-pressure or to vent a surplus.
The set point is changed with a handwheel on the standard version. For the 8 to 20 bar range, and for stainless steel or ductile iron bodies in DN 40 and 50, a hexagon socket screw replaces the handwheel.

Where the 44-1B fits and related parts
The 44-1B pairs naturally with the 44-6B on gas systems: reduce with one, relieve or hold back-pressure with the other. For steam-only reduction the 44-0B is the better match. Type 44-2 is the diaphragm-actuated option for liquids and district heating, and Type 2406 is a larger excess pressure valve for low-pressure gas blanketing. For service, keep the type, size, KVS and set point range from the nameplate to hand when asking for spare parts.
Selection and ordering checklist for the 44-1B
- Decide between reducing (44-1B) and excess pressure (44-6B) function before anything else.
- Medium, temperature and cleanliness; this selects body and seal material.
- Inlet pressure, outlet set point and flow, to choose the KVS and check the differential pressure limit.
- Connection type and size, and mating flange standard.
- Soft seal versus metal seal, based on leakage requirement and wear.
- Any special version, including FDA, FKM or PTFE-free internals.
Installation and maintenance of the 44-1B
Match the flow direction to the arrow on the body. The 44-1B can be mounted in any position, but leave room for the handwheel and the actuator housing. A strainer upstream protects the soft seat from weld spatter and scale, which are the usual causes of seat damage in new pipework. Commission by opening the isolating valves slowly and adjusting the set point against a gauge.
The regulators are low-maintenance. During shutdowns inspect the bellows for corrosion or fatigue, replace worn seat or plug seals, and check that the set point holds. Keep a seal kit available for spares on critical gas or air stations.
Typical applications in Oman and the GCC
Typical Gulf uses include instrument air and nitrogen skids in gas plants, compressed air lines in workshops and utilities, lube and seal oil supply stations, water make-up lines and gas supply headers to burners. In hot, dusty coastal sites the stainless steel body and enclosed bellows are a robust option, and the any-position mounting simplifies retrofits where there is little space.

Samson valve, actuator and positioner types
Samson builds a control valve from modules. The Type 3241 globe valve is the general-service body of Series 240, and the Type 3251 is the Series 250 body for higher pressure ratings. Either one is combined with a Type 3271 pneumatic diaphragm actuator or a Type 3277, whose yoke allows the positioner to be attached directly with a concealed travel linkage.
Among the positioners listed are the Type 3725 and the Type 3730 family: the 3730-1 as the basic electropneumatic version, sold in its current generation as TROVIS 3730-1, and the 3730-3 with HART communication and valve diagnostics. Samson also makes PROFIBUS PA and FOUNDATION fieldbus variants in the same family, plus self-operated pressure and temperature regulators.
Where Samson valves are used
Samson control valves throttle steam, gas and liquids in chemical and petrochemical units, refineries, gas processing, power stations, water and desalination plants, and food production. Many reach site as part of a skid or package, so the plant instrument team often meets them first when a positioner or actuator needs replacing. We supply these items to end users and contractors throughout the GCC.

Ordering Samson parts: what we need
Every Samson device has a nameplate with the type, a configuration ID (Var-ID) and a serial number. A photo of that plate is the surest route to an exact match. Without it, please send:
- Valve: type, DN or NPS, pressure rating, body and trim material, Kvs or Cv, plug and seat style, packing and bonnet type
- Actuator: type, effective area in cm², bench range, fail action and travel
- Positioner: full type code including Ex protection, communication and options such as limit switches or position transmitter
We check the code against Samson documentation and provide the manufacturer's data sheet on request.
Facts checked against SAMSON's corporate chronicle and press material, October 2026.
