SAMSON Type 3277 Pneumatic Actuator for Integral Positioner Attachment

Description

Overview

The SAMSON Type 3277 is a single-acting, linear pneumatic actuator designed for final control elements such as SAMSON Series 240, 250 and 280 control valves and butterfly valves. It is a diaphragm actuator with a rolling diaphragm and multiple internal springs, and its key difference from the standard Type 3271 is the yoke: the bottom diaphragm case is fixed to a yoke prepared for integral attachment of a pneumatic or electropneumatic positioner. The result is a compact control valve assembly where the positioner sits directly on the actuator with no external linkage or exposed tubing.

Seven Star LLC supplies the SAMSON Type 3277 to process plants, utilities and EPC contractors in the Sultanate of Oman and across the GCC. As a trusted supplier with engineering support in Muscat, we help customers match diaphragm area, bench range and fail-safe action to the valve and positioner they plan to use.

Operating Principle

In the SAMSON Type 3277, the signal pressure from the positioner acts on the rolling diaphragm and creates a force that is balanced by the internal springs. The number of springs and their initial compression define the signal pressure range, also called the bench range, and the travel is proportional to the signal pressure. How the springs are arranged in the actuator case, and whether the loading pressure is introduced to the top or bottom diaphragm chamber, determines the direction of action.

Two fail-safe actions are available. With “actuator stem extends”, the springs push the stem to the lower end position when the signal pressure drops or the air supply fails, which normally closes the valve. With “actuator stem retracts”, the springs pull the stem to the upper end position and the valve opens. For the most common fail-close arrangement, the signal pressure is led to the bottom diaphragm chamber through an internal air guide, so no external piping is needed at all.

Engineering Design of the SAMSON Type 3277

The standard SAMSON Type 3277 is offered with effective diaphragm areas of 240, 350 and 700 cm², with an optional top-mounted handwheel, and in a Fire-Lock version in which expansion cartridges hold the valve in its fail-safe position in case of fire. The smaller Type 3277-5 has a 120 cm² area and is typically used on the Type 3510 micro-flow valve. On the Type 3277-5, a changeover plate routes the positioner output pressure to either chamber, giving four combinations of fail-safe position and positioner operating direction without additional piping.

Direct attachment brings several practical benefits. The interference fit gives an exact mechanical connection, so the adjustment does not shift during shipping. The travel linkage is protected against accidental contact and external influences, and the air connection between positioner and actuator is simple. Because the spring chamber is connected to the inside of the yoke, no outside air can enter, which also protects the positioner against corrosion. Diaphragm cases are made of plastic-coated sheet steel on the larger sizes and plastic-coated die-cast aluminum on the Type 3277-5.

Key Features

The SAMSON Type 3277 is built around integral positioner mounting and offers the following features:

  • A yoke prepared for direct attachment of pneumatic or electropneumatic positioners such as the Series 3730.
  • Effective diaphragm areas of 120, 240, 350 and 700 cm² with rated travel from 7.5 to 30 mm.
  • A low overall height combined with powerful thrust and a high speed of response.
  • Various bench ranges, which can be changed without special tools.
  • Actuator action that can be reversed in the field without special tools.
  • Internal air routing for fail-close service, removing the need for external piping.
  • Optional top-mounted handwheel and a Fire-Lock version for fire-safe duty.
  • A sealed spring chamber connected to the yoke interior to protect the positioner from corrosion.

Industrial Applications

The SAMSON Type 3277 is used wherever a SAMSON globe valve needs a tidy, robust actuator-positioner package: steam pressure reduction, condensate level control, heat transfer oil systems, boiler feedwater and cooling water loops in power stations and desalination plants. In chemical and petrochemical units it actuates Series 240 and 250 valves on reactor feeds, solvent recovery and utility headers, where protected linkage and the absence of exposed tubing reduce maintenance in corrosive coastal air.

For throttling service the SAMSON Type 3277 accepts a supply pressure of up to 6 bar regardless of fail-safe position. In on/off service the fast stroking speed raises the pressure inside the actuator, so for the fail-open version the supply pressure must not exceed the upper bench range value by more than 3 bar. Seven Star LLC reviews these limits with engineers in Muscat, Sohar and Salalah when sizing actuators for new valves and for retrofit projects.

About brand
Control valve engineers know Samson by its type numbers: 3241 for the globe valve, 3271 and 3277 for the diaphragm actuators, 3730 for the positioner. The company was founded in 1907 and is based in Frankfurt. Seven Star LLC supplies Samson control valves, pneumatic actuators and positioners to process plants in Oman, including the types listed on this page and their replacement units.

Samson valve, actuator and positioner types

Samson builds a control valve from modules. The Type 3241 globe valve is the general-service body of Series 240, and the Type 3251 is the Series 250 body for higher pressure ratings. Either one is combined with a Type 3271 pneumatic diaphragm actuator or a Type 3277, whose yoke allows the positioner to be attached directly with a concealed travel linkage. The positioners listed are the Type 3725 and the Type 3730 family: the 3730-1 as the basic electropneumatic version, sold in its current generation as TROVIS 3730-1, and the 3730-3 with HART communication and valve diagnostics. Samson also makes PROFIBUS PA and FOUNDATION fieldbus variants in the same family, plus self-operated pressure and temperature regulators.

Where Samson valves are used

Samson control valves throttle steam, gas and liquids in chemical and petrochemical units, refineries, gas processing, power stations, water and desalination plants, and food production. Many reach site as part of a skid or package, so the plant instrument team often meets them first when a positioner or actuator needs replacing. We supply these items to end users and contractors throughout the GCC.

Ordering Samson parts: what we need

Every Samson device has a nameplate with the type, a configuration ID (Var-ID) and a serial number. A photo of that plate is the surest route to an exact match. Without it, please send:
  • Valve: type, DN or NPS, pressure rating, body and trim material, Kvs or Cv, plug and seat style, packing and bonnet type
  • Actuator: type, effective area in cm², bench range, fail action and travel
  • Positioner: full type code including Ex protection, communication and options such as limit switches or position transmitter
We check the code against Samson documentation and provide the manufacturer's data sheet on request.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between the SAMSON Type 3277 and the Type 3271?
Both use the same rolling diaphragm and spring principle. The Type 3277 has a yoke designed for integral attachment of a positioner, giving a protected linkage and simple air connection, while the Type 3271 uses external positioner mounting.
Does the SAMSON Type 3277 need external air piping?
For the common fail-close arrangement (actuator stem extends), the signal pressure reaches the bottom diaphragm chamber through an internal air guide, so no external piping is needed. On the Type 3277-5, a changeover plate selects the air routing.
Which diaphragm areas and travels are available for the SAMSON Type 3277?
The Type 3277 is available with 240, 350 and 700 cm2 effective areas, and the Type 3277-5 with 120 cm2. Rated travel ranges from 7.5 to 30 mm depending on size.
What supply pressure can be used with the SAMSON Type 3277?
The maximum supply pressure is 6 bar for throttling service. In on/off service with the fail-open version, the supply pressure must not exceed the upper bench range value by more than 3 bar.
Can Seven Star LLC supply the SAMSON Type 3277 with a positioner and valve?
Yes. Seven Star LLC supplies the SAMSON Type 3277 with matching positioners and SAMSON globe valves, with engineering support in Muscat and delivery throughout Oman and the GCC.
