Samson Type 47-5 Flow and Differential Pressure Regulator
Description
Samson Type 47-5 flow and differential pressure regulator
The Samson Type 47-5 is a self-operated regulator that controls two quantities at once: the flow rate, set at an adjustable restriction, and the differential pressure, set at a fixed value inside the actuator. The valve closes when either the flow or the differential pressure rises, and the larger of the two signals always governs. The datasheet T 3131 covers it together with the Type 46-7 and the Type 47-1 and lists valve sizes DN 15 to 50, PN 16 and 25, liquids up to 150 °C and nitrogen or air up to 150 °C in the PN 25 FKM version. Seven Star LLC supplies the Type 47-5 in Oman and the GCC as an independent supplier in Muscat.
A combined regulator replaces two separate devices, a flow limiter and a differential pressure regulator, with a single globe valve and an actuator with two operating diaphragms. It is aimed at district heating and cooling substations and at industrial plants where each branch needs a defined maximum flow without disturbing neighbouring branches.
Type 47-5, 46-7 and 47-1: what the codes mean
| Type | Where installed | Set points |
|---|---|---|
| 47-5 | Low-pressure pipe, for example the return of a substation | Fixed differential pressure 0.2, 0.3, 0.4 or 0.5 bar; adjustable flow rate; internal overload protection |
| 46-7 | Low-pressure pipe, for example the return of a substation | Adjustable flow rate and adjustable differential pressure (0.2 to 0.5, 0.2 to 0.6, 0.2 to 1 and 0.5 to 2 bar); internal overload protection |
| 47-1 | High-pressure pipe, for example the supply of a substation | Adjustable flow rate with differential pressure or downstream pressure set point |
The datasheet describes the 47-5 as the fixed-differential-pressure version with an adjustable flow rate and overload protection. The 46-7 and 47-1 versions allow the differential pressure set point to be changed with a manual adjuster and a scaled cap.

How the dual control works
Flow is measured as the pressure drop across the adjustable restriction. The low pressure downstream of the restriction passes through a hole in the plug to one diaphragm chamber, and the high pressure is sent by a control line to another, so the second diaphragm turns the flow-related pressure into a force. The first diaphragm turns the differential pressure of the circuit into a second force. The plug follows whichever force is larger, moving in the closing direction when either the flow or the differential pressure exceeds its set point. The minimum differential pressure across the valve is the restriction pressure drop plus the (flow divided by KVS) squared term given in the datasheet.
Where the 47-5 fits in a system
The regulator is placed in the line it protects, normally on the return of a substation or branch. Other Samson regulators on this site that complement it are the Type 46-6 (differential pressure with flow limit), 45-1 N and 42-36 (flow regulator). When the plant also needs temperature control, the Series 43 regulator can be combined in the same branch.
Selection checklist for a Type 47-5
- Required maximum flow and the differential pressure available across the branch.
- Fixed differential pressure set point from 0.2 to 0.5 bar.
- DN and KVS to cover the flow range, noting that noise rises if the listed flow ranges are exceeded.
- PN 16 or PN 25 and the temperature, including FKM seals for oils or gases.
- End connection: welding ends, threaded ends, screw-on flanges or a flanged body for DN 32 to 50.
- Intermediate insulating piece for well-insulated pipes.
Installation, commissioning and maintenance of the 47-5
Horizontal or vertical pipes are acceptable, but DN 32 and larger must be installed in horizontal pipes with the actuator down. Respect the flow arrow and connect the external control line to the correct pipe. A strainer upstream is recommended. During commissioning, adjust the restriction cap to the flow set point using the flow table, then verify with a flow meter. If the flow set point is exceeded, a noise increase can be expected even without cavitation. Maintenance is simple: strainer cleaning, diaphragm inspection and seat checks.
Typical applications of the Type 47-5 in Oman and the GCC
Branch-balancing in chilled-water and heating systems of large buildings, district cooling substations, camp utilities and process heating loops all benefit from a regulator that works without power or signal wiring. Because the actual flow is limited at the source, commissioning of the whole network is much quicker than with manual balancing valves alone.

About brand
SAMSON is a German manufacturer of control valves, actuators, positioners and self-operated regulators. Hermann Sandvoss founded the company in Düsseldorf on 1 April 1907, and its first important product was a thermostatic valve that controlled temperature without external power. After moves to Mannheim, SAMSON settled in Frankfurt am Main in 1916, where SAMSON AG is still headquartered.
Seven Star LLC supplies Samson control valves, pneumatic actuators and positioners to process plants in Oman, including the types listed on this page and their replacement units.

Samson valve, actuator and positioner types
Samson builds a control valve from modules. The Type 3241 globe valve is the general-service body of Series 240, and the Type 3251 is the Series 250 body for higher pressure ratings. Either one is combined with a Type 3271 pneumatic diaphragm actuator or a Type 3277, whose yoke allows the positioner to be attached directly with a concealed travel linkage.
Among the positioners listed are the Type 3725 and the Type 3730 family: the 3730-1 as the basic electropneumatic version, sold in its current generation as TROVIS 3730-1, and the 3730-3 with HART communication and valve diagnostics. Samson also makes PROFIBUS PA and FOUNDATION fieldbus variants in the same family, plus self-operated pressure and temperature regulators.
Where Samson valves are used
Samson control valves throttle steam, gas and liquids in chemical and petrochemical units, refineries, gas processing, power stations, water and desalination plants, and food production. Many reach site as part of a skid or package, so the plant instrument team often meets them first when a positioner or actuator needs replacing. We supply these items to end users and contractors throughout the GCC.

Ordering Samson parts: what we need
Every Samson device has a nameplate with the type, a configuration ID (Var-ID) and a serial number. A photo of that plate is the surest route to an exact match. Without it, please send:
- Valve: type, DN or NPS, pressure rating, body and trim material, Kvs or Cv, plug and seat style, packing and bonnet type
- Actuator: type, effective area in cm², bench range, fail action and travel
- Positioner: full type code including Ex protection, communication and options such as limit switches or position transmitter
We check the code against Samson documentation and provide the manufacturer's data sheet on request.
Facts checked against SAMSON's corporate chronicle and press material, October 2026.

FAQ
Questions about the Samson Type 47-5 Flow and Differential Pressure
Answers from our engineering team on installation, compatibility and integration.
01What does the Samson Type 47-5 regulate?
It regulates both the flow rate, adjusted at a restriction, and the differential pressure, fixed in the actuator. The valve closes when either value rises above its set point.
02Which differential pressure set points exist for the Type 47-5?
The 47-5 has a fixed set point of 0.2, 0.3, 0.4 or 0.5 bar. The Type 46-7 and 47-1 offer adjustable ranges such as 0.2 to 1 bar and 0.5 to 2 bar.
03What media and temperatures are allowed?
Water and other non-flammable liquids up to 150 °C (130 °C in PN 16), and air or nitrogen up to 150 °C in the PN 25 version with FKM diaphragm and seals.
04Does the Type 47-5 need power or air?
No. It is a low-maintenance proportional regulator that requires no auxiliary energy.
05Is overload protection fitted?
Yes. An internal excess pressure limiter in the actuator responds at 0.5 bar above the adjusted differential pressure and protects the seat and plug.
