SAMSON Type 3310 Segmented Ball Control Valve
Description
Overview
The SAMSON Type 3310 is a segmented ball valve for throttling or on/off service in industrial applications with high flow rates. Instead of a full ball, it uses a V-profiled ball segment that rotates through up to 90 degrees against a seat ring, combining the high capacity of a rotary valve with fine control at small openings. The SAMSON Type 3310 is available in DIN and ANSI versions from DN 25 to 300 (NPS 1 to 12) in PN 16 to 40 and Class 150 to 300, with temperatures from −46 to +450 °C when fitted with an insulating section. It is combined with SAMSON Type SRP single-acting or Type DAP double-acting pneumatic rotary actuators, or with the Type 3278 single-acting rotary actuator.
Seven Star LLC supplies the SAMSON Type 3310 as complete rotary control valve assemblies, with actuators, positioners and solenoid valves, to customers in Muscat, across the Sultanate of Oman and the GCC. We provide engineering support in Muscat for valve sizing using the SAMSON flow coefficient tables and for configuring fail-safe action.
Operating Principle
In the SAMSON Type 3310 the medium flows into the convex face of the segmented ball. When the valve is closed, the process pressure acts on this convex side and presses the segment against the seat. As the shaft turns, the V-shaped opening between ball edge and seat ring grows, and the flow coefficient is determined by the opening angle. SAMSON publishes CV and KVS values in 5 to 10 degree steps, together with the FL and XT factors needed for sizing and noise calculations. For abrasive media, the direction of flow can be reversed to reduce wear on the body.
A notable feature of the SAMSON Type 3310 is that one valve can provide two characteristics. With the standard mounting, the actuator turns clockwise to close and the valve has a modified equal percentage characteristic; with the actuator converted to turn counterclockwise to close, the characteristic becomes modified linear. Rangeability is 100:1 or better. With the Type SRP or Type 3278 actuator the valve can be fail-close or fail-open on loss of supply air, while the spring-less Type DAP actuator has no defined final position on air failure and is chosen where the valve should stay put or be driven by a separate safety system.
Engineering Design of the SAMSON Type 3310
The SAMSON Type 3310 body is cast steel 1.0619 or A216 WCC, or cast stainless steel 1.4408 or A351 CF8M, with flanges to DIN EN 1092-1 or ANSI B16.5 and face-to-face dimension to DIN EN 558-2 Series 36. The segmented ball is 1.4404 or 1.4409 (316L or CF3M) and chrome plated as standard. Two seat designs are available: a soft seal seat ring in PTFE reinforced with stainless steel (up to 220 °C) or PEEK, giving leakage class VI to ANSI/FCI 70-2, and a metal seal in ARCAP AP1C copper alloy, giving leakage class IV. The shaft is 316L, or AISI 630 for DN 150, and runs in plain bearings, with a spring-loaded PTFE V-ring packing.
The standard version covers −29 to +220 °C. Further versions listed by SAMSON include double packing with or without leak monitoring, an insulating section for a wider temperature range, special flange faces, an additional handwheel or manual override, a heating jacket, FDA and NSF H1 compliant gaskets and lubricants, extra seals to protect the bearings, and a version for gaseous oxygen up to 13.8 bar. Accessories mount to VDI/VDE 3845 on SRP and DAP actuators, and SAMSON accessories can be attached directly to the Type 3278.
Key Features
Key features of the SAMSON Type 3310 from SAMSON data sheet T 8222 are:
- Segmented ball design for high flow capacity, up to KVS 2650 (CV 3100) at 90 degrees for DN 250 and 300.
- Throttling or on/off service with rangeability of 100:1 or more.
- Equal percentage or linear characteristic selected by the actuator rotation direction.
- Soft seal for leakage class VI or metal seal for leakage class IV.
- Chrome-plated stainless steel segmented ball for wear resistance.
- Cast steel or cast stainless steel bodies in DIN and ANSI versions.
- Flow direction can be reversed for abrasive media.
- Fail-close or fail-open action with Type SRP or Type 3278 spring-return actuators.
Industrial Applications
The high capacity and wide rangeability of the SAMSON Type 3310 make it a cost-effective alternative to large globe valves in liquid and gas lines. Typical applications include cooling water and seawater systems, pulp and slurry lines, fuel gas and natural gas flow control, steam and condensate service at moderate pressure, and filling and dosing in chemical plants. The soft-seated version is often used where tight shut-off is required alongside control, and the metal-seated version where temperature or abrasive particles would damage a polymer seat. In food and pharmaceutical utilities, the FDA and NSF H1 compliant options of the SAMSON Type 3310 are relevant.
In Oman and the GCC the SAMSON Type 3310 suits desalination intake and brine lines, district cooling and HVAC central plants, water treatment works, gas processing utilities, and process plants in Sohar, Duqm and Salalah where large flows must be throttled economically. For sizing, Seven Star LLC can work from your process data with the SAMSON CV and KVS tables and supply the SAMSON Type 3310 with the actuator, positioner and limit switches required for the loop.

About brand
Control valve engineers know Samson by its type numbers: 3241 for the globe valve, 3271 and 3277 for the diaphragm actuators, 3730 for the positioner. The company was founded in 1907 and is based in Frankfurt. Seven Star LLC supplies Samson control valves, pneumatic actuators and positioners to process plants in Oman, including the types listed on this page and their replacement units.
Samson valve, actuator and positioner types
Samson builds a control valve from modules. The Type 3241 globe valve is the general-service body of Series 240, and the Type 3251 is the Series 250 body for higher pressure ratings. Either one is combined with a Type 3271 pneumatic diaphragm actuator or a Type 3277, whose yoke allows the positioner to be attached directly with a concealed travel linkage.
The positioners listed are the Type 3725 and the Type 3730 family: the 3730-1 as the basic electropneumatic version, sold in its current generation as TROVIS 3730-1, and the 3730-3 with HART communication and valve diagnostics. Samson also makes PROFIBUS PA and FOUNDATION fieldbus variants in the same family, plus self-operated pressure and temperature regulators.
Where Samson valves are used
Samson control valves throttle steam, gas and liquids in chemical and petrochemical units, refineries, gas processing, power stations, water and desalination plants, and food production. Many reach site as part of a skid or package, so the plant instrument team often meets them first when a positioner or actuator needs replacing. We supply these items to end users and contractors throughout the GCC.
Ordering Samson parts: what we need
Every Samson device has a nameplate with the type, a configuration ID (Var-ID) and a serial number. A photo of that plate is the surest route to an exact match. Without it, please send:
- Valve: type, DN or NPS, pressure rating, body and trim material, Kvs or Cv, plug and seat style, packing and bonnet type
- Actuator: type, effective area in cm², bench range, fail action and travel
- Positioner: full type code including Ex protection, communication and options such as limit switches or position transmitter
We check the code against Samson documentation and provide the manufacturer's data sheet on request.
